FRED STENSON’S - TEETH -
Teeth, by Fred Stenson, is an interesting short story, with a plot
spread between two hockey games and the childhood memories of the main
character. The story is written in first person, through the eyes of
a hockey player – the main character - and the setting is in western
Canada, mainly around Canadian hockey rinks and the main character’s
hometown. The story presents a player, who plays hockey for money
rather than for pleasure. The author of this story tries to provoke
the readers, by writing through the eyes of this player, who does not
love the game he plays. The idea that a hockey player – a
professional Canadian hockey player – would dislike the game of hockey
and still play, is what shocks, confuses and keeps the reader
interested in the story. This unusual characterization of a hockey
player is also important to the development of plot. Finally, this
story gives people advice about how to live and enjoy life more
effectively.
The story begins during one of Burns’s – the main character - hockey
games, on a Tuesday night, not long after Christmas. The players in
his team are quite fatigued and near the end of a game. They are
supposed to change lines onto the ice, but Burns is lost in a daydream
about his youth and the line change goes too slowly. For some seconds
there is no one on the ice except the goalie and the six members of
other team. The other team scores a goal before the line change is
completed and Burn’s team goes on to lose the game 5-3 (93). The
reader must conclude that the loss of the game is partly the fault of
the main character. This conclusion comes from the fact that he is
daydreaming about his childhood, and memories of being made to play
hockey by his parents. It is at this point in the story that the
reader learns of Burn’s dislike for the game of hockey, and through
these daydreams that the reader discovers the main character’s
motivation to play the game is the money he is being paid. After the
game, in the dressing room, the manager is angry and threatens to send
some of the players down to the minor leagues. When the main
character hears this, his reaction is not what the reader would expect
of a hockey player who loves to play the game. Instead, Burns
continues to daydream and shows a lack of respect for his teammates
and the manager. The manager mainly blames Burns for the team’s loss,
because he did not put out, and his lack of enthusiasm infects the
A little known fact about the mile-long Fred Howard Causeway is a favorite among filmmakers, it was featured in John Cusack’s movie "Grace is Gone" and in a national television commercial for Cadillac. The park dates back to 1945, when Tarpon Springs Mayor Fred Howard was in office and was dedicated in his honor in 1966. The park receives over 2 million visitors annually. Fred Howard Park stands alone in its beauty and sensual stimuli by combining the feel of being in a national forest along with a beautiful sandy beach with its man-made island.
It’s Saturday Night, the crowd gone wild with an epic hit on the opposing team. The occasional drunk sitting next to you, as your kids enjoy delicious Dipping Dots. Right as the momentum is swinging towards the home team, a penalty is called. A powerplay opportunity is awarded to the defending team. With the home team fighting with all their might to defend from a goal, down 4 on 5, they run around like chickens with their heads chopped off, trying to get the puck out of their zone. Then when everything seems to simmer down, a fight breaks between the bulkiest guys on each team, punches being thrown, blood spattering across the ice. In hockey today, there are two main leagues in the United states: the NHL, and USA Hockey. Just like in any game, there are basic rules that must be followed. In these two leagues there are similarities and differences in basic “golden” rules, benefits from playing, and the official’s code of conduct.
One minute and fifteen seconds into the second overtime. Game seven. Scoreless. The puck is grabbed by the Red Wings left defenseman, he feeds it over across the ice. Gretzky stabs at it deflects it wide. Steve Yzerman grabs it, he skates past the Blues right-winger. He brings it past the the Blues’ blue line and Winds up for a slap shot. He fires. It is a laser beam of a shot. The puck flies in the top right corner of the net, bar down. John Casey has no time to react. The Red Wings have won. Steve Yzerman is the hero. Perhaps one of his most famous goals in his career, Steve Yzerman lead the struggling Red Wings to success. The longest serving captain in the NHL, “Stevie Y” earned his way to the top with his work ethic and leadership. The game of hockey was changed forever by the imprint that Steve Yzerman left on the game. He used his determination, love of the game, and natural leadership to impact hockey for the better.
Ice hockey is a sport played on ice, often within the confines of a rink. The sport is played with two teams on skates who use sticks to shoot a puck at a net to score, only occurring when the puck gets past the goaltender. The game is played with usually five skaters on the ice, plus the goaltender. Three of these players are usually forwards, while two are defenders. This game moves at a fast pace where players are on the ice for usually 45 seconds at a time before a line change occurs, where the players on the ice come off and a new set of players go on [1]. The offensive line is on the ice to get the puck to the other team’s zone and shoot on the goaltender. The defensive line is on the ice to protect the goaltender and

False teeth, which are known today as “dentures”, are bony plates which are installed into a patient’s mouth by means of adhesion to the fleshy mandibular or maxillary arch. Although these are now relatively inexpensive and their requirement is often taken for granted, they have not always been so easy to come by. A look at the history of false teeth shows a pain-staking and quirky evolution:
When Paul Henderson scored the final goal for team Canada, every Canadian who was old enough to remember felt the joy and relief that was upon every Canadian who watched that game. Paul Henderson was one of the 38 players of the Canadian team that played against the Soviet Union in the series. The first four games were played across Canada and finishing up the series with the last four games in Russia. Canada wins the emotional series with four wins, three losses, and one tie. The 1972 Summit Series changed the face of hockey from how the players were trained, the level of emotion in the fans and players, and the skill of each player.
Men also had greater magnitudes of contact compared to their female counterparts. Unfortunately most injuries in ice hockey are from blunt force or direct contact. Concussions are the most common injury in men’s and women’s collegiate hockey. Interestingly enough is that women’s hockey showed a higher rate of concussions than men’s hockey. The study pointed out various options for head-impact mechanisms in ice hockey. The playing area is solid ice and the boards surrounding the area consist of rigid boards. Pucks, when shot, can go over the speed of 80mph. Players can possibly exceed speeds of 30mph. Lastly, because ice hockey is a full contact sport, players are purposefully trying to collide with one another. All of these issues are reasonable mechanisms of head-injuries. This article also references another article which classifies concussion mechanisms in ice hockey into seven categories. These seven categories are: contact with another player, contact with the ice, contact with the boards or glass, contact with a stick, contact with the puck, contact with the goal, and no apparent contact. In this article's study about half of recorded
Ice hockey is a sport that is played and loved all around the world. The hockey culture is like no other. I have firsthand experience with this culture and it’s different from many things. Hockey gets the reputation as a brutal sport with a bunch of goons trying to kill each other, but most people don’t get to see on the other side. Hockey brings people together whether you are a different race, have different beliefs, or a different gender it’s like one big happy family. Ice hockey wasn’t invented or it didn’t have a specific year it began. It all started around the 1800’s in Windsor, where three college students from King’s College, adapted their knowledge of the game field hockey to the ice, where a new winter sport was born. The boys called the game Ice Hurley which later got called to what we know today as Ice Hockey. As the years went by, the game was being played by soldiers across Canada, where it was carried o...
“The Blackhawks have the puck here in OT against the Blues, and we are all tied up at two. The Blackhawks are in control of the puck. Kane takes the puck. Kane’s skating down the ice. Kane passes the puck. Tarasenko slides in front of it! Tarasenko steals the puck. He’s skating back down the ice. He gets around Kane! It’s Tarasenko versus the goalie! Tarasenko sets up! Slapshot! The Blues win the game!” This is just one of the many commentaries that can be heard on any given night of a hockey game. Hockey has been around for decades, and like many sports, it is loved by many as their favorite sport of choice. One of the many key components if not the most important component to a hockey game is the hockey stick. Hockey sticks have been around
Before beginning to play hockey you must know the rules of the game. A hockey
The article Poor Teeth was written by Sarah Smarsh with the goal in mind being to shed light on the issue between upper and lower class society in a particularly concrete way. Teeth and dental health are an easy thing for people to imagine in their head because everyone has a set whether they’re white and shiny or black and rotted. This makes it easy to draw a comparison between people that care for their teeth and those who don’t. However, access to dental knowledge and services which the lower class often times doesn’t have is very different between the poor and the rich. While the rich stroll through life showing off their perfect glossy white rows of teeth, there are less privileged people out there with barren mouths whose weak pale gums
Have you ever stopped to think about what your beliefs truly are? Are they what they “ought” to be? Do you ever wonder about the cultural history of your family? Zadie Smith brings up both of these topics in her book White Teeth, portraying many different sides of each. The story takes place in England in an area with many different cultures coming together, mainly English, Jamaican and Bangladeshi, for purposes of this story. All have different religious beliefs and cultural differences but not everyone follows their historical beliefs throughout their life and certainly not faithfully. Religious moralities and race, ethnicity and multiculturalism are two moral theories that can shed some light onto the messages within
The Skin of Our Teeth by Thornton Wilder illustrates a family dodging one catastrophe after another. By the skin of their teeth, they will defeat ice, flood, and war. The main characters of this play are George and Maggie Antrobus, their two children, Henry and Gladys, and Sabina, who appears as the family's maid in the first and third acts, as well as a beauty queen seductress in the second act. The Skin of Our Teeth takes place at the Antrobus home in Excelsior, New Jersey; and the Atlantic City boardwalk.
...during the game the captain should be involved for support or stopping depending on the situation. In small hockey towns, for example, all the young children in the town look up to the captain of the local hockey team. If the captain is seen doing something wrong, it is looked negatively upon; he or she must keep a positive status for themselves and for the team. The captain must have the intelligence to dissect problems that have to do with his or her team.
