Fantasy in Theatre

In preperation for our performance on the above subject, we firstly
listened to several pieces of fantasy music as a guided visualisation
in which we were asked to imagine going through different doors and to
visualise what was behind them. This then inspired us to experiment
with diferent stylistic devices to include in our performance.

We were given two pieces of text that was goin to be the scope for our
piece of Drama, they were:

A Midsummer Night's Dream - A play by William Shakespeare. Era wise,
there were no problems with using this, as Shakespeare is timeless and
can be set in any period of history, including modern day. This
particular play is set in the dream like world of fairies. The Lord of
the fairies, Oberon, has an argument with his lover, Titiania, over a
young boy she has adopted after the death of her waiting woman. Oberon
wants her to hand over the child to him, Titania refuses. Oberon
decides to send Puck to fetch a magic flower, the juice of which,
dropped into Titanias' eyes will make her fall in love with the first
thing she sees in order to trick her. He hopes that this will distract
her so he can take the boy.

The Jabberwocky - This is a poem written by Lewis Carroll (from
Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872) It tells
of the defeat of a mythical monster. By reading the text, we can see
that it doesn't really make much sense, but we can make some sense of
the words by their sounds.

In our group, we started discussing our ideas then looked at the two
texts and fitted our ideas around them.

In our performance, we decided to have good and evil involved, we had
2 dream masters and 4 other people. 2 of which were taken by the evil
dream master who gave them nightmares, the other 2 were taken by the
good dream master who fulfilled their fantasies. The 4 characters had
there own dream, one wanted everything they asked for, another wanted
to be an Indian, another wanted to remain popular and successful at
school, and lastly the focal point was on the character who wanted to
see her Mother again because she passed away. We used the idea out of
'A Midsummer Night's Dream' where Titania was put asleep, in our
play,we also took the idea of having 2 dream masters from the
characters Oberon and Puck. The dream master puts the 4 characters to
sleep using his powers.

She starts by walking through a room where the other characters are
angry and frustrated because of the abuse gets at the hands of the
bullies. We also used stylistic movement in which the girl would
imagine to grab someones hair and all of us would react in the same
way at the same time. We used this as the play would look out of
contrast if we performed it in a naturalistic way so we with the way
we experimented with the stylistic devices before hand, we decided
that this was the best method in which to show this scene.

In the next scene, we see her walking through a forest in which the
trees talk to her, lines from 'The Jabberwocky' are quoted

"'Twas brilling and the slithy toves"

"Did gyre and gimble in the wabe"

"All mimsy were the borogroves"

"The Jabberwork, with eyes gull of flame"

At this point the girl sees her mother in the distance surrounded by
trees, she runs and as she reaches out to her Mother the trees close
in on her, preventing the girl from reaching her. In the play, there's
a line that says "Come to my arms, my beamish boy" but we changed
'boy' to 'daughter'. The tree that was preventing the girl from
reaching her Mother says this line, this was used as irony, because
the girl couldn't reach her Mother at all. Then there's a spotlight on
the girl, where she can only hear but not see her Mother, her Mother
tells her to fight the bully's and that she will always be with her.
We wanted to show the audience that this girls life was not a walk in
the park, despite that, thats is actually what's she doing in the
scene, we tried to show that she tried and tried to overcome the
obstacles that got in her way, hence the trees. Going back to the
beginning of the play, we showed 3 short scenes from 3 different times
in the girls life that all show bullying towards her because she has
no Mother. On the third scene we see her at a party in which she asks
to leave then the bullies target her again, however, in the final part
of the performance we see this scene again but with a different
ending, instead of asking to leave the party, she actually asks to
have another drink, she begins to fit in with the others.

For the dream masters, we used masks. The good dream master wore a
white mask and the evil dream master wore a black one. The purpose of
the mask was to hide the naturalistic impressions, and for the
audience to view the two characters as abnormal and inhuman.

I had to use a different register of voices throughout the play, I
played numerous characters, all with different personalities. When i
played the dream master, I had to speak with a formal voice, whereas,
when I was playing the teenage boy at the party with his friends, I
had to use a more informal voice. I had to change from one vocal
expression to the other with ease, I believe I tackled this well.

I thought we tackled the issue well, although I believe we could have
used more script from the text, particularly from 'A Midsummer Night's
Dream' which would have improved our performance because it would have
gave us a better idea of what to include in it. I think we were
successful because people were expecting this to be like the rest and
be about dreams people have, but we actually proved them wrong and
involved a good side to dreams and a bad side so the audience got both
sides of the story. We were aware that groups around us were involving
the dream aspect into there performance, so we tried to make ours as
unique as we could to prove that this subject can be shown in a number
of ways.
