This book takes place in the past and is about an old man that loves fishing in the Gulf Stream. The old man was a thin with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck and had scars on his hands from handling the fishing rope. He taught this young boy how to fish and the boy loved him. He even brought him fishing many times. But the past 84 days the old man had not caught one fish. After 40 days of not catching anything the boy left and fished on another boat. The boy still loved him and brought him food and fresh bait to fish. The old man and the boy always talked about baseball because they both enjoyed it.
One day, the old man was out on the water fishing. The weather was beautiful, the currents were perfect, and he saw all birds flying over the water. He knew he had to catch a nice fish today. He saw one of his poles have a jerk so he pulled it in and it was a bonita fish, which he was goin to use for a nice piece of bait later in the day. The day progressed and he saw a real big jerk on the pole. He jumped up and held it, but the fish was not hooked yet. A couple more jerks he felt, but the fish was not taking it. Finally the fish did and he could feel that it had to be a fish of enormous size. He could not pull it up because it was so strong. He had to hold onto it until the fish was tired and decided to come up. Then when it would come up, he would take his harpoon and stab it in the heart so it would die. This fish was taking all the strength out of him and it was pulling his skiff farther and farther out. Now he wished that the boy was here with him to help him pull it up. It was 3 days later until he finally got the fish to jump out of the water. When it did he saw that it was the biggest marlin he ever saw. To regain strength and pull the fish in, he had to eat the bonita that he caught. He ate all of it and it helped his hand that was cut from the

The movie On the Waterfront begins with a long shot and the surroundings on the edge of a waterfront. There is a dark lighting like sunset is about to hit, and we are able to see a giant cruise liner in the harbor. The giant boat stands out in the light, and the much of the water is dark. There are many horizontal lines that define the giant boat, and a few vertical lines are able to get distinguished by the small boat with the mast on it as well as the shed on the side. The music has rapidity and suspense that leads you to think that something bad is about to happen. The camera has a long shot that moves to medium. The long shot is balancing with the rapid music because since there is a long short is not as suspense with the hurried music and you feel more comfortable. The Men come out of the small shed by the dock. They walk in a linear form, one behind the other, wearing long dark coats with a mysterious look on their faces. Most of them are wearing the long coats that fall to their knees, and one of them is wearing a square pattern shirt with his right hand in his jacket , his and expressions unhappy.

I would recommend this book to a certain type of person that I am not. This book would be great for someone who wants to learn more about the fishes that most commonly end up on their plate. If someone was interested in in the future of the oceans and the last wild food, this book would be great for them. While I did not enjoy the book I still give it three stars out of five due to being full of good information to those that want it.
In the 19th century Kate Chopin’s novel The Awakening shocked and outraged much of the Victorian literary public. With “True Woman” being the fashionable and iconic movement of the decade for a novel to backlash at “True Woman” was unspeakable to many readers. The main character Edna Pontellier throws away her social values to do what she wants, including having an illicit love affair. Of all the subtle foreshadowing and symbolism Chopin displays in this classic novel the sea plays a major role in Mrs. Pontellier’s so called “Awakening”.
Samuel Coleridge was an amazing poet. Many of his poems have a crazy, mystical feeling to them. This, for the most part, is because he was usually high on drugs when he wrote his poems. His poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, is the poem that brought about many popular, widely written-about topics. The movies, The Pirates of the Caribbean, come from this poem. The whole idea of people being dead, but still, somehow, able to function comes from this poem. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is one of the most influential poems of the English language. A sailor tells a story to a young wedding guest. Here is a brief summary: the sailor was on a ship which got caught in a current, and carried to the far south, becoming trapped in ice. After a long time, an albatross showed up, and mysteriously, the ice gave way for the ship to escape and sail north. The mariner made a big mistake. He says in his story, “With my crossbow, I shot the albatross.” When they got to the equator, they hit the doldrums, where there was no wind to push the ship any further. The superstitious sailors assumed that it was because the mariner had shot the albatross. A mysterious skeleton ship came along, and death took the whole crew, but the man who had shot the albatross. The dead bodies kept staring at him. After a while, when he was about to die of dehydration and starvation, the sailor started to appreciate and respect nature. The albatross, which had been hung around his neck, fell off into the sea. It started to rain. The winds picked up. The sailor would be free, finally. Except, he needed the crew to help work the ship. They woke up and helped move the sails and steer the ship back home. When he reached the harbor, the souls all le...

Located in the dark, cold pages of Moby Dick lies evil, an evil by the name of mankind. Mankind snarls its teeth into the face of nature and fellow-man by character development and a thick plot. By diving into the characters and the author, the motives of these individuals is shown clearly through the murky water.
The fish withholds a great part in this book. The Old Man and the Sea is a book that’s about a small town where the residents revolve their lives around fishing. The fish is a symbol of beauty and it is a greatly admired creature to these people. An example from the book is on page 49. Santiago has been fishing for 84 days and decides not to return home without a fish on the 85th day. On the 85th day, alone in the boat, he manages to hook an enormous marlin, the biggest fish he's ever seen in all his life. The fish is larger and stronger than Santiago. Santiago's experienced fishing skills and his will to catch and survive push him to pursue the fish for many days and many miles out to sea.
Based on an actual incident in 1853, Ivan Doig’s The Sea Runners chronicles about the escape of four Swedish indentured servants from a fur trade fort in 1850’s Russian-America. As the story unfolds and in order to seek opportunity in the new world, many Europeans, including four Swedes sign on to an indenture with the Russian-American Company (RAC) in New Archangel located in what is modern-day Sitka, Alaska. After two years, the four Swedes have enough of it and plot their escape. After stealing supplies and a native canoe, they set off for the U.S. city of Astoria, 1000 uncharted miles south. They face many adversaries, including storms, rocks, angry Russians and Koloshes (name given by the Russians to the indigenous people along the coast).
The book “In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex” by Nathaniel Philbrick is tragic, eyes widening and heart wrenching where all the morals and ethics are gravely subjected to situation and questioned when it comes to survival. What they must do for survival? How man love their lives and no matter what strikes upon them, holler from behind, ambush their morale, yet they want to keep going just for the sake of living. The book is epitome of such a situation that encounters survival over morality. However, in the thrust of knowledge and oceans of secrets locked inside the chambers of this world, there is a heavy price men have to pay in the ordeal of yearning for knowledge.
Reading through the novel The Old Man and the Sea one, as a reader, can perceive several themes in the book. Hemingway suggests certain subjects for discussion which built up the whole plot, therefore giving us options to choose the one we believe is the main one. In the past weeks we have been discussing, in a debate, which is that main theme. My group’s theme was “Man Defeated” and although it is hard to affirm that this theme was the prevailing one of the book, we firmly defend it. Various arguments were established. Some argued that the novel’s theme was Santiago’s struggle, the friendship with the fish and other characters; Santiago’s perseverance and that he really ended up as a triumphant man. But to argue that those were also the main themes of the book is also a difficult thing to do. Even though Santiago fought and kept on with his struggle to catch the fish, he was defeated because he lost it at the end.
Fishing tests your patience; if you want to catch a fish, you’re going to have to wait. I dip my feet into the icy water of the river and wait, wait, wait. I feel relaxed, surrounded by nature, but the air around me is also buzzing with the excitement. Goats graze on the grass that grows atop the rocky cliff across from me, and a gentle breeze whispers through the ivy that drapes over it. My hands are gripped tightly around my rod, ready to reel up my first catch, ready for the weight of a monster fish, ready for anything. Out of nowhere, I feel the slightest tug on my line and see a flash of rainbow scales beneath the water. I see my fishing rod bending with weight, which could mean only one thing: FISH ON! I begin to reel it in, inch by inch. The trout flies out of the water, glistening as the setting sun reflects off of its scales. The sky is ablaze, full of different shades of magenta, orange, and scarlet. It was as if an artist had painted the sky with the skillful strokes of their paintbrush. I hear my parents gasp with awe behind me. The first
The painting, Watson and the Shark and the novel, The Old Man and the Sea, are two examples of how human interaction is depicted with the sea. These two works have a similar theme and setting. They both describe life at sea off the coast of Havana, Cuba. They both portray relationships between humans and animals. The natural world portrayed in Watson and the Shark is a far better prediction of how humans view the world today than the novel, The Old Man and the Sea.
