Whether or not the statement by Henry Beecher is true, it is certainly well put when spoken in the context of martyr Sir Thomas More. This paper contrasts and classifies Sir Thomas More as a unique hero, when compared to society’s typical, Beowulf-Romeo style heroes.
It is doubtful that Thomas More, as a grown man, was ever engaged in a physical confrontation of his choosing, and except for his faithful and loving wife, had any romantic escapades. Still, however, he is an undeniable hero of great stature.
Almost every hero from King Arthur to Spiderman is characterized with physical prowess, whether it is agility, strength, or skill in combat. Thomas More on the other hand, was none of the above. His strength was not in his arms, but in his mind, his wit was his agility, and his words were his sword. Thus More’s knowledge and moral self are the only things that distinguish him as a hero.
More’s own opinion in fact, was valued so much, it was the reason of his death; he died because he stood by it. King Henry VIII who, unless with More’s blessing, could not divorce, and at the same time wed a new wife. The King knew and respected More’s honesty on all matters. Though, because More disagreed with the issue, the King could not in his own mind justify his actions, without eliminating More as a problem, and seeing him as wrong.
Sir Thomas More stood by what he knew was right in his heart, by that which made him a man, his own threads of morality; even when faced with the grief of his loved ones. Locked up in a cell, away from his wife and daughter, he was able to persevere and stand his ground, when all it took was a simple signing of his name to be with them again. This may seem an act of selfishness, but had he given in, all he had ever lived for, and everything he had ever believed in, would have been gone in that brief moment.
In this essay I have only shown three, but there are so many more and the traits of a hero are not only restricted to people who save lives, chase bad guys, or change the world. He overcame constant pressures with his determination, led a whole team with his outstanding leadership, and never gave up thanks to his passion. He is a hero to many, no cape, or superpowers needed. When one reads the story, initially they would consider More as a wise and religious man, who wouldn’t even harm a fly. He was deeply respected for he was quite intelligent, in the aspect that he was a lawyer and knew the business of politics well. More was considered wise. He had his own ideas of things, and he seems to know what is best for everyone. However, it was his philosophies and his strong faith in the Church, the King, and in God that got him prosecuted.
I believe Thomas did a subpar job of executing logos, ethos, and pathos in his “This I Believe” essay. The essay had its strong moments especially in how easily the audience could relate to Thomas’s belief; even with this being so, the essay lacked depth in many areas which caused the essay to have a too simplistic and dull feel to it. This same belief Thomas holds and believes in so strongly has been the cause of great history changing wars and for millions of people to leave their homes and lives behind all for a single belief. Overall Thomas’s belief is incredibly rooted in to his very being causing the person he is today because of this I believe he will hold this belief for most if not all his life however the manner in which he wrote about his belief, unfortunately, was not as strong as the belief itself.
In the early 16th century, Thomas More wrote a novel about a fictional society in which humanist ideas were dominant. During this time, European noble power was anything but a Humanist utopia. Europe was not only a mess, but a genocidal mess. Between the reigns of the Tudor Dynasty, and eventually under power of Queen Mary I, English citizens lived in constant fear of their religious rights and their lives. On top of the religious civil wars, the Catholic Church and other clergymen were progressively straying from ‘purity ideas’.
This statement is very true for the time of Anglo-Saxon culture and literature. A hero was like a god and was put on a pedestal far above the others. A hero brought peace to situations that were deemed impossible and brought joy to many people.
When tales of heroes are so grandiosely told through poems and stories often too wild to be real, the emphasis of heroism is shown through their journeys rather than their characteristics. They are in terms heroes without any real humane flaw; through the analysis of these two tales it’s, apparent that they share many similarities in the themes, but the traits of the protagonists and the reasonings behind the choices they made until their demise were entirely different. In these pieces of literature the villains are also in a limelight of their own, making one question, “Who was actually in the right all along? Who’s really to blame?” The antagonists are as infamous as the protagonist themselves are famous like a balancing act; only one of equal prowess can take down another. Items of value, recognition, and the art of gifting are shared through these epic poems but are the heroes in accepting them, the same?

Sir Thomas More was born in London to Agnes and John More a lawyer in 1477. Tomas after being a page in the Morton Household was sent to Oxford University and became a successful lawyer. After becoming an MP for the Under-Sheriff of London he started writing the book Utopia and finishing it 1516. After writing the book he was appointed as the privy councilor to King Henry VIII in 1518. He was latter executed in 1535 for refusing King Henry VIII to be the head of the church. Utopia is a fictional book about Mores talk with Raphael Nonsenso and his travels to Utopia.
After that, Wolsey asked More how he planned to give the king a male heir. More said that he would “pray for it daily” but Wolsey wanted to “secure a divorce” so that King Henry VIII could marry Anne Boleyn and most likely produce a male heir, which he felt would solve the issue immediately, since he was making the effort to do something, unlike More, who would rather pray for help.
Throughout history, there have always been heroes. Those strong-willed, brave individuals who perform courageous acts for fame and glory are prevalent in most cultures.. Societies have these heroes as standards of their cultures’ moral codes. Every society has their own definition of these codes are, so a unifying definition of hero can be hard to achieve. However, Philip Zimbardo says “Simply put, then, the key to heroism is a concern for other people in need—a concern to defend a moral cause, knowing there is a personal risk, done without expectation of reward.” With this basic definition, I will be examining various epic heroes I’ve studied throughout the course of my senior year for characteristics. From the copious amounts of studying, I’ve deduced that Achilles, Odysseus, Aeneas, Socrates, Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and Arthur all have characteristics that make them heroic.
Thomas More hates war, as do most people. But you must have an army constantly training to avoid war. Having a well-trained army will scare enemies and keep people from attacking them. This is yet another corporate vocation. Everyone in the army has a private vocation to protect the city and the people within so this creates another corporate vocation. The army protects the farmers and religious and the farmers provide food for the soldiers and the religious pray for the army as well as the farmers. So it all comes together into one large corporate vocation. Regarding the book itself, it ends with worship because it is the way to live.
Heroes are often described as physically attractive, strong, intelligent figures with a flair for grand gestures,and an eloquent knack for stringing words together. The fundamental aspects of what defines a hero are conveniently glazed over. People forget that heroes often lead lives of quiet determination. When they have an idea, a goal they want to accomplish, they ignite a spark within themselves that burns into an uncontrollable blaze, which that can only be tamed by success. The fabricated image of a hero has been so deeply rooted into society that the quiet heroes in literature, such as Jefferson from A Lesson Before Dying, are often forgotten, or the misdeeds of cowards such as Frankenstein are overlooked. Jefferson is the literary foil for Victor Frankenstein, because he has strongly built morals that enable him to become a hero, whereas Victor Frankenstein is a weak willed and indecisive character. A hero is defined by their ability to go through with a task despite the obstacles that lie in their way, along with their courage and ultimately, they accept any responsibility that may befall them.
