I Intend to Pursue Engineering
The college admissions and selection process is a very important one, perhaps one that will have the greatest impact on one’s future. The college that a person will go to often influences his personality, views, and career. Therefore, when I hear people say that “it doesn’t matter that much which college you go to. You can get a good education anywhere, if you are self-motivated,” I tend to be rather skeptical. Perhaps, as far as actual knowledge is concerned, that statement is somewhat valid. Physics and mathematics are the same, regardless of where they are taught. Knowledge, however, is only a small piece of the puzzle that is college, and it is in the rest of that puzzle that colleges differ.
At least as important, or even more important, than knowledge, is the attitude towards that knowledge. Last year, when my engineering team was competing in the NEDC Design Challenge, held at Hopkins, after the competition I and a few friends talked to a professor of civil engineering. What struck me is the passion with which he talked about his field of study. At Hopkins, everyone-the students, the faculty, the administration-displays a certain earnestness about learning. This makes Hopkins a good match for me, as I, too, am very enthusiastic about the subjects I study. I love learning, and when those around me do too, it creates a great atmosphere from which everyone benefits.
My enthusiasm and activeness extend not just to academics, but to other aspects of life as well. I am very involved in extracurricular activities, participating in my school’s engineering club and math team, and I love sports, having played on the varsity soccer and tennis teams for three years. This makes Hopkins, with its great sport traditions and a multitude of clubs and organizations, a great choice. Further, while in college I intend to explore new activities. Because of my school’s small size and dual curriculum, there is a relatively narrow spectrum of activities available for me. Hopkins affords a great opportunity for me to branch out and participate in organizations to which I previously had no access.
Another aspect of Hopkins that attracts me greatly is its student body, diverse and multicultural, but at the same time uniformly strong academically. Since I myself am a refugee from Russia, where I experienced social and cultural anti-Semitism, multiculturalism and acceptance of different groups are very important to me, not to mention that it allows me to meet people of different backgrounds and learn of their varying perspectives.
In the year 1961, the building of Berlin Wall called upon disasters in Germany. United States controlled the west of Berlin while German Democratic Republic held the East. Being stuck under the rule of day to day terror, people from East Berlin were making their way to the West Berlin. West Berlin was a safe spot and freedom checkpoint in the middle of terror. To stop the moving of East Berliners, the East German government decided to build a barrier that limited and halted the East Berliners from leaving. But the battle to control Berlin between, the United States and the Soviet Union, had been taking place since after the division of Germany. The end of World War II was the beginning of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. The Soviet Union had control over East Berlin, which was governed by a communist government and the United States had control over West Berlin, which was regulated by a democratic government. Both countries wanted full control over Berlin, so the Soviet Union set up a blockade on the West but was unsuccessful. The Berlin Wall was then built to stabilize the economy of East Berlin, which meant that fewer people could escape the east to live in the west. In the article “The fall of the Berlin Wall: what it meant to be there,” by Timothy Garton Ash, he highlights the feelings of no longer having a “iron curtain” segregating both sides of Berlin.
Facing something that we want to judge, we can not only find its disadvantages, then ignore its advantages and values, and that’s the same for colleges. As a matter of fact, we need to face everything with fair judgements rather than prejudices. Community college or two-years college is good for us to choose; don’t let the prejudices influence our

Even though Berlin lay deep within the Soviet sector, the Allies thought it would be the best to divide this capital. Therefore Berlin was also divided into four parts. Since the Soviet Union was in control of the eastern half of Germany, they made East Berlin the capital of East Germany. The other three counties were each in control of a small part of what was to be West Germany. The Allies decided that they would come together to form one country out of their three divided parts. Those three divided parts formed West Germany. After all the land was divided the Soviet Union controlled East Germany. Just like the Soviet Union, the economy in East Germany was struggling to get back on its feet after the war. While West Berlin became a lively urban area like many American cities, East Berlin became what many thought of as a ‘Mini-Moscow’. In East Germany there was literary almost nothing. The shelves in the stores were practically bare, and what was there was not in very good quality.
When it comes down to choosing a college or a university to attend, the decision may be hard to make. Students often compare differences and similarities in their college experience between small and big schools when it comes to looking more into the learning environment, housing opportunities, and the entertainment provided.
When I was accepted into the University of Oklahoma, I was not aware of the tradition or prestige that the football team carried. Moreover, I had no idea about the honor it was to don the crimson and cream in the arena of athletics. And, I never envisioned rooming with them. I enjoyed sports, but I loved reading and writing more. Initially, I was focused on building a collegiate career that one day would propel me to my goal of studying law. Yet, the more time I spent interacting with the athletes, the more parallels I noticed between their personalities and mine. Their diligence, perseverance and compassion were all traits that I could identify with since they were reflective of me. For the most part, the majority of the athletes were hungry to achieve and they desired knowledge at all costs; a combination that still resonates with me today.

Sports are an easy activity to participate in, which every passionate high school student hopes to get a college scholarship for. The University of Michigan scouts for well-rounded students to enroll within their school who participate in activities in and out of school. It would not matter if a high school student was on a travel soccer team, but was not on the varsity team at their high school. This is because colleges look for those who participate in sports within school and have excelling grades. Although, the University of Kansas looks for high school “graduates that participated in many activities both in and out of school” (Berkowitz). Every year millions of students are faced with a decision that will greatly affect their future, choosing the right college. In the fall of 2013, approximately 21.8 million students attended American colleges and universities (Fast Facts). Making sure you choose the right college is important because it will affect your future and it will determine what kind of education you will receive. When choosing the right college, a few things that need to be considered are the cost, the academics, and the campus (As You Research Colleges).
Clubs and activities truly stand out to them, it gives them a chance to see your desires and interests. I just finished volleyball season, in which i have played for the last four years of high school. I also participated in basketball and track for two of the four years. Therefore, for two years of my high school career I was a three sport athlete. Part of being able to participate in these school activities means that your grades have to meet certain standards. Our athletics go so farther than just grades though, the are very strict when it comes to bad behavior such as, ISS, OSS, drugs, alcohol, etc. The have little to no tolerance to acting out or not behaving in a manner that represents the school in a good way. So if I were to choose to participate in any of those behaviors, I would be giving up certain opportunities within my athletics. For anyone with as much love and desire for the sports i participate in, it would be easy to behave and keep my grades up. Irrational forces and unconscious motivations drive the human mind to a unique conduct and performance. Freud believed the choices we make are determined by biological and instinctual drives. The purposes of instincts are for survival and aggression. In the field of psychiatry, Freud founded his type of psychoanalytic therapy on curing mental illnesses. The basis for Freud’s work on treating mental patients was on an illness called hysteria. One popular case that Freud began the majority of his work on was the Anna O. case. But one thing the certain individuals do not take into considerations, is the class size of the school. I believe the size is key. There are many pros and cons, when it comes time to buckling down to a specific school. Right major, closer to home, bandwagoning with friends, geographic features and size are common reasons why certain schools are chosen. I personally believe small universities are better, the smaller the greater. Yes, Large universities are nice and all, but when attending a small university one feels safe and one feels a lot closer to his/her companions. (O 'Brien, Claudia Moore, Sec. For me, I hope to achieve greatness by continuing with UBWA, and by doing my absolute best, attain a leadership role. I hope to one day be able to use the leadership skills I learn to bring young, ambitious women with a passion for business closer together at Ohio State. Furthering my interests in business, I hope to become a member of the co-ed business fraternity, Phi Chi Theta. I attended many of their events and informational sessions this fall, and I fell in love with their mission. I hope to one day be a representative of their professionalism and devotion, not only on campus, but as a future alumni. A more immediate goal of mine is to become more involved with residence life within my dorm. Unfortunately, due to late classes, I was unable to become a council member within Drackett Tower, as I had originally hoped. This, however, hasn’t stopped me from being interested in how to get involved! Over the next few weeks I hope to attend more of the general body meetings within my residence hall, to become a more active and leading member within my community. I want to be able to communicate with others that live around me to create ideas for service, fun, and overall community building. Being involved, is not only important to my values, but it is even recommended by professionals to improve a student’s performance in school. Even the Ohio State website states, “In addition to building lasting friendships, student organizations provide many benefits including serving as a medium for academic discourse, personal growth, leadership development, intercultural understanding and community service,” (Student Organizations, 2016). However, I hope to go beyond basic involvement. For example, I am the current treasurer of (FBLA) The Future Business Leaders of America, Member of (DECA) it 's an international association for marketing that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in finance, hospitality and management. Additionally, I am an active member with Upstanders, a club that stands up against bullying and hate; (ASA) The African Student Association and the National Art Honor Society.
