Roger Williams ... A Brief Biography

ROGER WILLIAMS was born in London, circa 1604, the son of James and Alice (Pemberton) Williams. James, the son of Mark and Agnes (Audley) Williams was a "merchant Tailor" (an importer and trader) and probably a man of some importance. His will, proved 19 November 1621, left, in addition to bequests to his "loving wife, Alice," to his sons, Sydrach, Roger and Robert, and to his daughter Catherine, money and bread to the poor in various sections of London.
The will of Alice (Pemberton) Williams was admitted to probate 26 January 1634. Among other bequests, she left the sum of Ten Pounds yearly for twenty years to her son, Roger Williams, "now beyond the seas." She further provided that if Roger predeceased her, "what remaineth thereof unpaid ... shall be paid to his wife and daughter...." Obviously, by the time of her death, Roger's mother was aware of the birth in America in 1633 of her grandchild, Mary Williams.
Roger's youth was spent in the parish of "St. Sepulchre's, without Newgate, London." While a young man, he must have been aware of the numerous burnings at the stake that had taken place at nearby Smithfield of so-called Puritans or heretics. This probably influenced his later strong beliefs in civic and religious liberty.
During his teens, Roger Williams came to the attention of Sir Edward Coke, a brilliant lawyer and one-time Chief Justice of England, through whose influence he was enrolled at Sutton's Hospital, a part of Charter House, a school in London. He next entered Pembroke College at Cambridge University from which he graduated in 1627. All of the literature currently available at Pembroke to prospective students mentions Roger Williams, his part in the Reformation, and his founding of the Colony of Rhode Island. At Pembroke, he was one of eight granted scholarships based on excellence in Latin, Greek and Hebrew. Pembroke College in Providence, once the women's college of Brown University, was named after Pembroke at Cambridge in honor of Roger Williams.
In the years after he left Cambridge, Roger Williams was Chaplain to a wealthy family, and on 15 December 1629, he married MARY BARNARD at the Church of High Laver, Essex, England. Even at this time, he became a controversial figure because of his ideas on freedom of worship.

John Demos' book The Unredeemed Captive examines the story of "Reverend Mr." John Williams, the minister of the church of Deerfield (a town of approximately 300 in the Massachusetts Bay Colony), and his family. The reverend and his wife had many connections to important figures of the time. His father was a shoemaker, farmer, and "ruling elder" in the church at Roxbury. Reverend John Eliot, the minister of the Roxbury church, created many of the "praying towns" in which converted Native Americans worshipped and was New England's "Apostle to the Indians." Reverend Williams' wife, originally named Eunice Mather, was the daughter of Reverend Eleazer Mather, the minister of the church of Northampton in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Increase and Cotton Mather, two of Boston's most famous ministers, were her uncle and first cousin, respectively. Eunice Mather's grandfather, Reverend John Warham, was one of the founders of Conneticut (p. 8-9). The many connections of Reverend John Williams and his wife enabled him to become the leader of Deerfield and one of the town's most important symbols of Puritanism.
In 1771 William, his father, and his brother joined the regulators, frontiers men who fought against the British royal governor. Because of that his brother was hung and his father’s farm destroyed. The Few’s were forced to move again, now to Georgia. William stayed in North Carolina living by himself until 1776. When he got to Georgia he was accepted to the Bar and began to practice the law in Augusta.
Carter G. Woodson The “ Father of Black History” as we know today, Dr. Carter G. Woodson was born on December 19, 1875 to James and Anne Eliza Woodson in New Canton, Virginia. Woodson was the first child of nine children of James and Anne Eliza who were newly freed slaves. Carter’s supported his family at a very young age by working in a coal mine. At the age of seventeen, Carter and his family moved to Fayette, Virginia, where he worked in a coal mine.
Williams was a young man but had several of radical ideas and an unrestrained tongue. He saw the Church of England as being too corrupt and preached emphatically for his fellow faithful to separate from them entirely. In addition, he challenged the role of the clergy in political and judicial issues as he believed in the separation of church and state. Williams denying the authority of the Puritan’s civil government control over religious behavior was seen as a very seditious act. All in which he uses a combination of photograph and elegantly written narrative to show an idiosyncratic portrait of the American people.
Ralph Vaughan Williams was born in The Vicarage, in Down Ampney, on October 12, 1872 to Arthur and Margaret Vaughan Williams. Ralph’s father; Arthur was the vicar of the All Saints Church in Down Ampney in 1868. Through his mothers side Ralph had two famous great-great-grand fathers; Josiah Wedgwood, the founder of the pottery at Stoke-on-Trent, and Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles Darwin. In 1875 Ralph’s father suddenly died, when he was only two years old. His mother moved him and his two siblings to the Wedgwood family home: Leith Hill Place, in Surrey.
Nowadays, it is widely known that the right and left hemisphere have different functions. The two hemispheres are equally important in a daily life basis. Nevertheless, in the 1960’s this was not common knowledge. Even though today the importance of the brain hemispheres is common knowledge, people don’t usually know to whom attribute this findings. One of the people who contributed to form a more defined picture about the brain hemispheres and their respective functions was Roger Wolcott Sperry, with the split brain research. Roger Sperry did more contributions than the split brain research, but this is his most important and revolutionary research in the psychological field. Thanks to the split brain research, Sperry proved that the two hemispheres of the brain are important, they work together and whatever side of the brain is more capable of doing the task is the hemisphere that takes the lead.
Later, Roger got to know a 20-year-old lady, Rebecca Prescott, and she became his second wife in 1763. That was a critical point in Sherman’s life after which he returned to become more involved in the political life. A year later, Roger was elected to the General Assembly, and he became the justice of peace of New Haven in 1765. During that time he worked as the treasurer at Yale College and received an honorary Master of Arts
She was born in Alford, U.K. in 1591 and was the eldest child of her large family of a priest. She learned about religion from her father and continued to fight for his legacy of religious independency after his death in 1611. She married William Hutchinson who was a successful cloth merchant and had several children. During the first twenty years she learned all she could about medical herbs, religions, and other subjects. When she lived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony she was put on trial for sharing her beliefs and even with her amazing defense she lost the trial and banished from the colony. Years later her husband died and later her almost all of her kids died by an Indian attack. She died on August 01, 1643 on Long Island
Mary was sold as a slave and her two children went to other masters. Mary Rowlandson was ransomed at ₤20 just three months after she was captured. She was returned to Princeton, Massachusetts on May 2, 1676. Soon after that, her two surviving children were returned.
Power relationships are represented in different ways in various texts dependent on the historical era from which the text is produced. Jasper Jones is a coming-of-age novel written by Australian writer, Craig Silvey in 2009. It follows the life of Charlie Bucktin, a thirteen year old resident of Corrigan, a rural mining town in Western Australia as he matures into adulthood. In order to protect Jasper Jones, the town’s ‘troublemaker’, he helps Jasper to dispose the dead body of Laura Wishart, the missing daughter of the shire president and struggles to keep this dreadful secret. Power relationships in this novel have been reflected, reinforced and challenged in their own context and my personal context through various narrative conventions. Racial power has been reflected in the text through the context in which the text is set. Sexual power has been reinforced in the contemporary context. Furthermore, in both the text’s context and my context, the idea of political power has been challenged.
Thomas Morton came to the New England in the year 1622. Morton was educated for the law at Oxford. Upon his arrival to Plymouth people had already heard he came with shady past. He had come by his inheritance from which he was “plaintiff, lawyer, and beneficiary” (McWilliams pg 5).
