Mid-Term Paper
This Essay will be about the life and accomplishments of Mohandas
Karamchand Gandhi. And will also discuss Civil Disobedience.
Throughout history most national heroes have been warriors, but Gandhi ended British rule over his native India without striking a single blow. A frail man, he devoted his life to peace and brotherhood in order to achieve social and political progress. Yet less than six months after his nonviolent resistance to
British rule won independence for India, he was assassinated by a religious fanatic. Gandhi was one of the gentlest of men, a devout and almost mystical Hindu, but he had an iron core of determination. Nothing could change his convictions.
This combination of traits made him the leader of India's nationalist movement.
Some observers called him a master politician. Others believed him a saint. To millions of Hindus he was their beloved Mahatma, meaning "great soul."
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on Oct. 2, 1869, in Porbandar, near
Bombay. His family belonged to the Hindu merchant caste Vaisya. His father had been prime minister of several small native states. Gandhi was married when he was only 13 years old.
When he was 19 he defied custom by going abroad to study. He studied law at University College in London. Fellow students snubbed him because he was an
Indian. In his lonely hours he studied philosophy. In his reading he discovered the principle of nonviolence as enunciated in Henry David Thoreau's "Civil
Disobedience," and he was persuaded by John Ruskin's plea to give up industrialism for farm life and traditional handicrafts--ideals similar to many
Hindu religious ideas.
In 1891 Gandhi returned to India. Unsuccessful in Bombay, he went to
South Africa in 1893. At Natal he was the first so-called "colored" lawyer admitted to the supreme court. He then built a large practice.
His interest soon turned to the problem of fellow Indians who had come to South Africa as laborers. He had seen how they were treated as inferiors in
India, in England, and then in South Africa. In 1894 he founded the Natal Indian
Congress to agitate for Indian rights. Yet he remained loyal to the British
Empire. In 1899, during the Boer War, he raised an ambulance corps and served the South African government. In 1906 he gave aid against the Zulu revolt.
Later in 1906, however, Gandhi began his peaceful revolution. He declared he would go to jail or even die before obeying an anti-Asian law.
Thousands of Indians joined him in this civil disobedience campaign. He was imprisoned twice. Yet in World War I he again organized an ambulance corps for
While many men returning from war never want to reiterate their experiences, Steven’s father seemed to be an exception. Steven said of his father, “ he intoxicated me with bedtime stories about the war. His stories were like the war movies I was watching on television, all worthy of cameo appearances by John Wayne” (Stein 1). It is no wonder that at the age of twelve Steven’s first film, Fighter Squad, was filmed on a WWII fighter plane (Corliss 79). However, when Steven was unable to find certain props or realistic backdrops, he simulated dogfights and plane crashes by editing in footage from a WWII documentary. Only a year later, in 1960, he featured the war family Jeep in his second film, Escape to Nowhere, which was an action picture in which GIs invaded a Nazi hideout in the Libyan Desert. Since his family had moved to Arizona in 1960, the Arizona desert near his house would easily replicate the simulation of the Libyan Desert. It is clear that Steven’s love and knowledge of visual effects began many years before his creation of a mechanical great white shark in 1975. There have been many incidents throughout Steven's childhood that have made it into his films.
Emphasis: This focuses on a distortion of the message that is being said, how will a person understand what I am saying if I change the emphasis of words
This idea is presented in this line of dialogue between the boys, ”’I’m not drunk,’ Miguel insisted. ‘And you’re a phony.‘ ‘You’re p*ssed off because I’m going to see Flora,‘ said Rubén. ‘You’re dying of jealousy. Do you think I don’t catch on to things?’“ (251). In this scene the two boys, Miguel and Rubén, dispute over their same love interest Flora. When Rubén says, “You’re p*ssed off because I’m going to see Flora” it shows the first fight between the two over the girl and it makes the two boys enemies which is shown in the first archetype discussed when Miguel overcomes this argument and saves Rubén’s life. A similar archetype to this is in Beauty and the Beast when The Beast and Gaston both love Belle but she does not make it clear who she is in love with at first. The idea of the Love Angles is supposed to show how two character have a love interest on the same character like Rubén and Miguel do on Flora and the love interest, Flora, does not show who she likes. This is so easy for us to understand because we have seen this archetype many times before and if not in Beauty and the Beast, there still is Bridget Jones’s Baby, The Fifth Wave, and The Book of Life; therefore strengthening the idea that archetypes make it so there are

Death is a metaphysical concept that is abstract and theoretical in composition, but doesn’t embody a material form. From person to person, there are a vast array of interpretations of what death is and what it means to each individual. There is no single universal understanding of what death is, since it doesn’t embody any physical characteristics. I am the kind of person whose opinions are very easily influenced. Whenever I read a book, listen to a song, watch a movie, or look at artwork containing a strong message, my opinions (mainly metaphysical ones) are greatly impacted.
This characteristic of existence gives objects the ability to affect or cause an event. In On the Nature of the Universe, Lucretius describes objects that couldn’t be seen back then solely through the power of observation. The ideas that Lucretius discusses are now mostly found to be true. For example, “...things are not hemmed in by the pressure of solid bodies in a tight mass. This is because there is vacuity in things” (Lucretius 44). Lucretius discusses the vacuity, by definition is the “intangible and empty space” (44), which exists because if “it did not exist, things could not move at all” (44). For example, if water was solid, nothing would be able to move through it. In fact, we would be affixed to the water and unable to move ― like being trapped in ice ― but because water is not a solid, we are able to move through it and the space that we leave behind after we move, is filled by water. Lucretius was able to gain this knowledge by observing the natural world and determining the reasons why the natural world acts the way it does. Just like the way he speculated the existence “of bodies whose existence you must acknowledge though they cannot be seen” (43). Here, Lucretius is referring to atoms, which are not visible to the naked eye. Even though they are not visible to the eye, he is able to observe physical objects to
Along with that, he also watched a significant deal of movies as well. Through this, he taught himself about film. These were another factor that influenced on his works. Observing the movies he was seeing, he saw different ways to film; he experimented with a lot of things that made a movie impressive, such as the soundtrack. In high school, Steven wasn’t ex...

Death is the one great certainty in life. Some of us will die in ways out of our control, and most of us will be unaware of the moment of death itself. Still, death and dying well can be approached in a healthy way. Understanding that people differ in how they think about death and dying, and respecting those differences, can promote a peaceful death and a healthy manner of dying.
Biomass gasification is a process by which biofuel is produced. It has been used for over 180 years but in the last decades it has been reconsidered as an interesting technique due to the fact that oil supplies are decreasing. As mentioned before, gasification is a thermal process. Heat is added up in order to convert the organic mass to biofuel. The biomass usually undergoes drying, pyrolysis, partial oxidation and reduction. Nowadays the configurations used for gasification are three: fixed bed gasifier, fluidized bed gasifier and entrained bed gasifiers. The simplest configuration is the
When we hear the word death, we define it as the end of life itself. Most people fear death because it’s either going to be painful, unknown, or even both. I believe most of us fear death because it’s a final moment of being part of loving relationship or family, it makes you feel that there’s a ticking clock counting down your existence and that all you wished for or hoped may have not been achieved. I consider death an adventure because as human, we
Life is our ability to make our own choices. Life allows us to mess up, and learn from our mistakes. Life holds all of our memories. We grow through life, and prosper into something that we may have never imagined. Death is the grim reaper waiting at the end of the tunnel of life. Death takes away our ability to make any type of decision, or preform any kind of action. Once death occurs, that is it. Death marks the end of our story. Death stops the memories. Life and death are two totally different things that weirdly enough have a few similar traits. Life and death both occur world wide. Life and death are happening all around us nonstop. While life can be taken away quickly, it can also be given just as fast. Both occur within the blink of an eye. Life and death both have their downsides, but they also have their
Death is still the scariest thing to face in life and very hard to understand, but by overcoming the death of a loved one you will realize, death is just the way life works, its reality You will be able to see you are able to live your life without your loved one by your side. Overall, just enjoy everything you have in life because one day it will all be taken away from
Mahatma Gandhi's Influence and Ideas Mahatma Gandhi was a man of faith and great conviction. He was born into an average Hindu family in India. Like most teenagers he had a rebellious stage when he smoked, spent time with girls and ate meat (forbidden to strict Hindus). The young Gandhi changed as a person while earning a living as a lawyer in South Africa. He came in contact with the apartheid and the future Mahatma began to emerge, one who championed the truth through non-violent resistance.
“The strongest physical force bends before moral force when used in the defense of truth.” - Mahatma Gandhi (Bondurant). Mahatma Gandhi was the main leader in helping India become independent through the principles of non violence, self-rule, and the unity of Hindus and Muslims. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, but he was given the name Mahatma later on in his life. He wanted to see an united India without the rule of the British Empire. He accomplished this with passive resistance or resistance by non violence because he wanted to show that violence is not always the best answer.
