Importance of Leadership Leadership is something that stands out in people. In a group, people tend to look to the strongest person to follow. However, the strongest person may not be the best choice to follow. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack each have leadership qualities. Jack is probably the stronger of the two; however, Ralph is a better leader. He has a better understanding for the boys. He also has more common sense and treats the boys better than Jack. Ralph shows that he has a better understanding of the boys than Jack. He knows that the boys need some sort of order on the island in order for them to survive. He starts a simple form of government and sets a few rules for them. Even though they don’t last very long, the fact that he tried to help the group is what makes him a better leader. Ralph’s wisdom and ability to look toward the future also has an advantage over Jack. He has a sense to keep his focus on getting off the island. When the fire goes out, Ralph gets upset because the chance to be rescued was gone as well. Ralph enforces his role of leadership as he gives the boys a sense of stability of an authority figure. He keeps the boys in pretty good order at the meeting by making a rule that they can only speak if they have the conch. Ralph knows that the littleuns are afraid and they need shelter to feel more secure. They work together for a while, but as the time goes on the smaller boys want to go play. They slowly lose all their help until Simon and Ralph are the only ones left to work on them. Ralph knows that this is a necessity and keeps bringing it up at the meetings. Jack, on the other hand, is doing nothing but causing chaos. Jack fails to realize that the boys need security, stability, and order on the island Jack was a leader of the choir before the boys landed on the island. These boys, who were in the choir, still want to follow Jack; however, they have no discipline at all. The only thing that is on Jack’s mind is hunting. He doesn’t care about anything else, except capturing and kill the pigs for some food.
At the beginning hunting for Jack is just something to help the group survive and make sure that no one starves to death. After he kills his first pig his mentality changes he thinks that he doesn’t need the other and that hunting is his passion. He no longer cares if he gets rescued or not all he want is to kill pigs and make feasts.
Arrogant, disparaging, fearless, and merciless, this resembles the characteristics of an evil dictator. He rules not to serve the people, but to serve himself. He is in absolute control; nothing can stop him from being the king. In Lord of the Flies, Jack is mean, irrational, and scornful, and does not care about anyone’s interest. Jack symbolizes absolutism because he expresses divine right, emphasizes war, and removes the basic rights of others.
In assessing the impact and effect of popular cultural forms like MTV, it is important to acknowledge the extent to which, rather than having them imposed upon us, we may instead appropriate or assimilate parts, whilst choosing to reject or ignore the rest. This, of course, has the consumer or viewer acting (or perhaps more accurately interacting) as opposed to simply passively receiving (Philo par 16).Even though critics of MTV stand strongly against the passive consumer, th...
MTV single handedly created stars, who may never have gotten the chance without the advent of music video. A prime example of this is Madonna. I dare not infer Madonna is not talented, however it is her image more than her voice that sells albums. Throughout the years we have seen Madonna in all different stages. She constantly re-invents herself. From the material girl to the material mom, Madonna has perfected the use of music video and marketing. Without MTV she may never have attained the success she enjoys.
Some people are aware of their own evil, and know how to control themselves, while others have no idea. Whether or not one knows about their own evil, they can always see it in others. The book Lord of the Flies by William Golding shows how humans all have their own evil. Golding uses the symbols of the final fire, Castle Rock and the painted faces to illustrate that underneath the thin layer of veneer of civilization, man is a beast.
Jack’s remarks to Piggy plus his followed actions exhibited a dictator attitude, meaning he enforces the rules but will bend them to his advantage. In the next chapter, Jack shows an attitude change living on this island, a savage change. The hunters had left for their first hunt to find and kill a pig. Unsuccessful, they were relieved them from the hunt; however, Jack kept pushing, displaying an obsession with the hunt. “’I went on. I thought by myself –‘ The madness came into his eyes again. ‘I thought I might kill.’” (51) When he starts to paint his face, the obsession with the hunt grows, “He made one cheek and one eye socket white, then he rubbed red over the other half of his face and slashed a black bar of charcoal across from right ear to left jaw.” (63). He did this so animals could not recognize him. In the same time period, Jack’s job was to keep the fire going for a signal, but he let the fire die out because of a hunt, ruining a chance to be recused. When confronted, all Jack could think about was his first kill, “The fire’s only been out an hour or two. We can light up again-“ (70). Even though Jack had not questioned Ralph’s authority
Motivation alludes to the mental procedures that fortify energy and determination of wilful activities went for some objective. When this research started it was thought that most employees that tried hard and tried to demonstrate goal-driven behavior had a need they were trying to satisfy. A great example of a need satisfier is someone that wants to work with a team member on the project. They have the need of companionship and when this behavior is satisfied they show a motivation that is related to the need theory. Abraham Maslow was one of the psychologists that were researching the hierarchy of needs. Maslow found that all humans had a need they need to satisfy. (open.lib.umn.edu) When the need was satisfied the mind no longer sees that need as a motivator. SAS inc knew what their employees need were. They applied the needs theory to motivate the employees to work
Upon the arrival of the boys to the island Jack immediately found himself in the center of a power struggle. Although the conflict was brief, there was still a very obvious confrontation between Jack and Ralph. Once the boys had assembled themselves there was an election to see who was to be chief. Despite the fact that Ralph was voted leader, the desire to be in command never left Jack. Jack already had some leadership skills, being head choirboy at his old school, and he continuously challenged Ralph. The greatest source of conflict between Jack and Ralph was the debate over the necessity of maintaining a fire. Ralph felt that it was necessary to keep it burning at all times while Jack believed that hunting pigs and getting meat was much more essential.
The novel; “Lord of the Flies” is a highly renowned novel written by William Golding and published in 1954. The novel embodies many themes and events that are mysterious and unanticipated for the reader. During the course of the essay I will explain how the conch shell that is found at the foundation of the first chapter plays a significant role throughout the novel and how diverse themes are brought on from this influential shell. This essay will express an opinion on the conch shell, in the end has more power and order than the actual ‘beast’ that is signified on the island. I will also explore the social leadership of the conch throughout the novel which will also touch on a few themes that the conch shell plays a role in. The conch shell is one of the first real theme/symbol that readers are introduced too and stands its power for most of the novel which is why it should be explored in further detail in this essay.
In William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies Ralph though not the stronger person, demonstrates a better understanding of people than Jack which gives him better leadership qualities. Ralph displays these useful human qualities as a leader by working towards the betterment of the boys' society. He knows the boys need stability and order if they are to survive on the island. He creates rules and a simple form of government to achieve this order. Jack does not treat the boys with dignity as Ralph does. Ralph understands that the boys, particularly Piggy, have to be given respect and must be treated as equals. This makes Ralph a better leader as he is able to acknowledge that he was not superior to any of the other boys. Ralph's wisdom and ability to look to the future also make him a superior leader. Ralph has the sense to keep his focus on getting off the island. He insists on keeping the fire burning as a distress signal. Ralph's leadership provides peace and order to the island while Jack's leadership makes chaos.
There are many boys in the island; Jack, Ralph, Piggy, Simon, Sam, Eric and so on. Jack is a character of violent leader. From the beginning, he made conflicts with Ralph as voting leader of the boys. Ralph got more votes than Jack, who was a leader of choir, so Jack had not felt good since then. He never listened others’ words and act dogmatically; for example, he threw up his duty that is keeping fire and he went to hunt to display heroism. Otherwise, Ralph is very rational and he always tries to consider all other boys. He also puts escaping as top priority. After voting, some rules were made in meeting under Ralph’s instruction and that is why Jack started to hate Ralph. Jack doesn’t want to follow some rules and just has interested in hunting, while Ralph is thinking for escaping.
Jack’s data is very important because in some way the sake of the world is in his hands. Despite the fact that his son is in the North, Jack wants the president to only help the people in the South. Jack had to decide whether or not military troops should risk their lives going to the North in the deadly storm to try to save people or play it safe by just saving the people in the South. This is an important decision because the lives of people throughout the country and the world are at risk.

Learning to further expand my knowledge of how to properly write a college essay has been a fulfilling journey. In high school, advance placement English was the most pivotal class for me because it required me to think and perform on a higher level. I felt as if I could I mastered how to convey my thoughts into a essay, but after receiving my first college English 1101 grade back, I realized I did no master the skill as well as I thought I did. I received an eighty on my first paper, this was a huge shock considering that I received all A’s on all my English papers in high school. My grade was justified considering I made plenty of broad statements like “The color choice used by Rosenbaum is genius”, and did not give further explanation on the statement. Luckily, Professor Gallagher offered extra credit if I submitted a post write reflecting on what I did well and what I can improve on. Though the extra two points on my paper was fantastic, the
