Racial Tension in Fever
With the racial tension as high as it was in Philadelphia at the time of the Fever, one would think that any common enemy or goal would bring everybody together. However, when the illness known as the Fever hit the city, prejudice rose to different heights.
Prejudice and racism is bad enough as it is. However, the citizens of Philadelphia were making it look like they wanted the blacks and immigrants to come back into the city. They told the blacks that they could come back to the city because they had immunity to the disease, when in actuality they only needed the blacks and immigrants to act as caretakers for the white upper class citizens.
They forced the blacks and immigrants out of their homes, where they were loved by their families and friends, and into nursing the white residents of Philadelphia. The blacks and immigrants went from a place that they truly loved and that truly loved them back to a place where they were forced to love those whom they had hated just weeks before. In other words, the blacks were forced into forming an artificial love for their enemies. This is a new level of prejudice. This type of racism is worse than the original, simpler form of racism that existed in Philadelphia before the Fever broke out.
The illness was called the Yellow Fever Epidemic. Although it seemed like a terrible thing, it was actually like a godsend, in a very crude manner, to bring the many different races of Philadelphia together. When the fatal epidemic hit the white people of Philadelphia, the blacks and other immigrants who were shut out were given immunity, or so they were told, and the chance to return back to the city. As Wideman wrote, “I was commandeered to rise and go forth to the general task of saving the city, forced to leave this neighborhood where my skills were sorely needed. I nursed those who hated me, deserted the ones I loved, who loved me.” This is said by a black doctor named Dr. Rush, who is speaking of his extreme discomfort in leaving his community where he knows he is needed and appreciated to go and help a city full of people that will pretend to like him, so that in turn he will he try to save them. The people who were shunned out of the city were now returning to essentially save the city of Philadelphia.
Living a healthy life includes seven important factors as Pollan pointed out. Pollan, very cleverly laid out the diagram of what people should look for when trying to begin a new healthy way of life or either change it completely. A phrase that Pollan was best known for, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Pollan explained this quite well for those who were unsure as to what he really was saying. He paraphrased this expression by telling people that “everything he has learned about food and health can be summed up in those seven words.” However, many are left wondering, what does he mean exactly? Michael Pollan further elaborated on the meaning of this idiom by saying that “the first two words are the most important.” When Pollan said “eat foods”, he mean’t “eat real food, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and even fish and meat.” He stressed to people to avoid what Pollan called “edible food-like substances”. It is unknown how long North America has been occupied. There were certainly people on the land far before Christopher Columbus alighted in 1492. However, the United States’ history shows a lucid feeling of dominance emanating from Europeans as they moved in to the New World. As time passed and the people who resided in North America change, it becomes evident that white Americans were exceedingly racist and not very accepting towards those who were not like them. Three groups in particular, Native Americans, African Americans, and the Chinese, faced hardships as the United States issued policies against these groups and changed their lives.
Racism was used to justify slavery and racism and to divide the population to pit one part of the working class against another, thus weakening class consciousness.
People constantly say that a stranger realizes what the real problem is rather than those who are a part of the problem. In The Philadelphia Negro by W.E.B. Du Bois, the city of Philadelphia was concerned with the Negro problems of crime, underemployment and poverty. African Americas in the seventh ward were blamed for everything that went wrong in the city because they were the minority. Even though they had abolished slavery, during the 1890s blacks were still judged and discriminated against. The problems of crime, underemployment and poverty were not because of the blacks, but because of the city itself and the people living in it. The city as a whole decides to view the blacks as a problem because they need someone to blame. African Americans want privileges just like everyone else, such as the right to vote, the right to receive an education and equality without people thinking they are a problem to the city or anyone.
Many people desire to own a business, and many people go on to do so with knowledge and without having the proper knowledge. Working for two non-profit organizations much knowledge was gained in knowing how to operate these entities effectively and meeting with success. It was not easy due to the many mistakes made by management. Understanding the business is paramount before starting or working for a company. Many people only think about the possibility of making money but very few evaluate the possibility of losing money.

In Wendell Berry’s “The Pleasures of Eating,” this farmer tells eaters how their separation from food production has turned them into “passive consumers” who know nothing about the food they eat, or their part in the agricultural process (3). They are blindsided by a food industry that does not help them understand. Berry argues that the average consumer buys available food without any questions. He states consumers that think they are distanced from agriculture because they can easily buy food, making them ignorant of cruel conditions it went through to get on the shelf. Humans have become controlled by the food industry, and regard eating as just something required for their survival. Berry wants this to change as people realize they should get an enjoyment from eating that can only come from becoming responsible for their food choices and learning more about what they eat. While describing the average consumer’s ignorance and the food industry’s deceit, he effectively uses appeals to emotion, logic, and values to persuade people to take charge, and change how they think about eating.
As we know, there are a lot of business types in the world. Each of the businesses has their own strategies to survive in this competitive business world. There are some very magnificent things in the world. There also many horrible things. Prejudice can easily be classified as something terrible and awful. When it comes to business, especially when it comes to starting one, I tend to think I know it all. Yet in reality, I don't really even know how to get started, enough to make a business efficient, or even get the doors open enough to make the first dollar. When I first think of working/operating a business, I think of no boss but myself, the rules are made by me and no one else, and that seems like a great plan in my eyes. As well as having all company profit coming directly to me, and I get to decide what happens with it. Although I know there is more to it than that, there is forming a budget, working with customers, knowing when to expand, and when to coast through. I also know that in the world of business, that if you aren't moving ahead, you are moving backwards.
