Duplicating of genes and DNA…. Cloning? Cloning is basically the reproduction of cells. You take an unfertilized cell, combine it with a cell from the same organism and create a new living cell. The question is…is cloning OK? Is the breeding of a bigger and meatier cow and fresher healthier potatoes equal to cloning a person? Many different groups debate upon these questions. Religious groups argue that God created all, and he thrives on diversity. This diversity is being threatened by cloning. Some also believe the process which scientists use is murder. Because half of the nucleus used to make a normal being is sucked out, and destroying the original DNA is murder. The half set of DNA in the unfertilized egg cell is destroyed, but suggesting that destroying a mere nonliving, nonthinking chemical such as DNA is murder is ridiculous. Thousands of cells will die in your body as you're reading this, and their DNA will be destroyed with them. Is that murder?
Cloning, in it’s use right now with just foods and animals are quite beneficial. It opens many opportunities for both scientific and general population needs. Scientists use cloning techniques to make identical test subjects, so reducing the amount of error in animal tests. They can also protect endangered species by cloning couples in captivity. Many can benefit from organ cloning, although the process has not been perfected yet. Human ears have been reproduced on mice, which shows all the applications of cloning. In the future, this genetic mutation may save the lives of countless people that are if we can use animals to grow human organs in. The possibilities for this process have no boundaries.
Like anything else that is new, the cloning process can be used for wrongful purposes. For instance, when a species is too much alike, the possibility of a single disease wiping it out is very high. Overlook the disease and you bread weak animals. However, are the scientists vulnerable to our criticism for say overlooking the viruses or hereditary sicknesses? Or should we credit them for perhaps looking into that already? The scientists have no doubt already considered the consequences of over breeding in these plants and animals that are weak and diseased. Yet our society relies on the same small variety of plants and animals for our natural resources. All of this was, in actuality, happening before cloning started and it doesn't change much in the way of agriculture.
Cloning is defined by Webster is “a cell, cell product, or organism that is identical to the unit or individual it was asexually derived” (Webster 150). The actual process of cloning is considerably easier because of trial and error. This process can be helpful and can be deadly in the right hands. In this light, the ethics of cloning has, is, and will be one of the hottest topics of all time.

Another benefit of cloning is that plants and animals can artificially be produced in large quantities directed at human consumption, which may, in the future help world hunger. Nutritionally superior or more “predictable” plants can also be created which will which will benefit us health-wise, and save farm costs. Lastly, the main advantage of cloning is that, through organ transplantation (therapeutic cloning), lives can be saved or prolonged, for those who have defective organs. For these 3 reasons, it’s a no brainer that scientists should continue extensive research and experiments for the better of our society as a whole.
But on the contrary, many scientists believe that cloning can be such a positive achievement, not only for medical purposes, but for fighting extinction. For example, what if they could clone many of the endangered species that exist today? There are very few hundred of many beautiful animals that if something isn’t done to save them, they will be extinct in a few years. Human and animal cloning has so many different outcomes and uncertainties. It can be used for many different purposes, depending on what someone wants to use it for. People all around the world have different views on cloning. Some are against it and some are for it. However, not everyone fully understands how cloning works. Human and animal cloning will determine our future. It can improve or maybe even destroy mankind. When people think of the word cloning they think of evil scientist in a dark laboratory’s full of dangerous and scary instruments of science for conducting experiments, when actually the word clone means, “a cell, cell product, or organism that is genetically identical to the unit or individual from which it was derived (Dictionary.com).” In the past 50 years the science community has made many discoveries such as the cures for different life threatening diseases, different techniques of approaching different types of cancer, and different uses for the practice of cloning. Different people have many opinions about cloning. Some people in the medical field support the practice of cloning, because they believe it can help cure certain diseases by watching how they develop during the cloning process. But some people in the medical field do not support the practice of cloning, because they feel as if it is just a waste of time, and waste of money. Other people do not support the practice of cloning for religious reasons; because they feel as if things are suppose to live once and if a once living organism is artificially reproduced then it is defying the divine grace of God.
Animal cloning helps reproduce the healthiest animals in the farm so there won 't be any antibiotics or growth hormones inserted into the animals to make them bigger and plumper. It is unhealthy for the people who eat any meat or dairy products because people will then be antibiotic resistant to medicine and will have a tough time getting better. Reproductive cloning will also help any animals who are near extinction by freezing the cells in the lab. Scientists are debating if reproductive cloning should be done on humans because, the public and scientists are afraid of what will happen to the human clones and what they will be used for. “ The possibility of human clones as a source of organ transplants is also upsetting to many. Some members of the U.S. Congress have presented bills to prevent human cloning for any purpose” (Kidd and Kidd 106). There has to be tons of testing and experiments on animals, the results have showed a little evidence of failures. Before the ethics of human cloning can be discussed, the mechanics of cloning must be understood first. Cloning is the process of making an exact genetic copy of an organism by a method called nuclear transplantation which is a process of removing a nucleus (the center of a cell which contains all of the biological information) from a cell and placing it into an already fertilized egg that had its nucleus removed (Dudley 6). That process creates an embryo which then can be “grown” in a lab or inside of a surrogate mother. However the process is not as easy as it sounds because the cells of an adult organism have mostly specialized to do a certain task. The cell specializes by turning “off” certain genes (sections of DNA that code for proteins) and when this specialized cell is transplanted into an egg, it is expected to turn into a whole new organism but with the same genetic makeup as the “donor” of the nucleus. That poses a problem because the specialized cell would not have all the necessary genes turned “on” for a new organism to create all the diverse organs and tissues that a new organism needs so there would be many failures before a functional and healthy clone is produced (Nusslein-Volhard). Cloning is on many scientists’ minds now a day. Many TV shows, and past movies have had some sort of cloning shown, or at least have had a reference to it. There has been major research done about every single type of cloning, or the health risks that come along with cloning. Some scientists say that, cloning should not be allowed be it takes up a lot of time, and most of the time requires luck (NBC News, 2014). Despite the negativity cloning gets from scientists and people, my opinion is that cloning should be allowed and eventually in the long run will help the human race. Cloning is not currently allowed, but should be allowed for medical research, population growth of the intelligent, and to be available for new scientific discovery.
Is human cloning wrong? Many people over the years and today have been asking themselves that question. In my opinion cloning would be playing God. Since the beginning of time God has devised a good and proper plan to make babies. Why mess with it? The process of cloning scientifically means to genetically copy an organism and create a “replica” that has the same DNA, whose cells time have been turned back, yet the two are not exactly the same. Over the past decades many cloning experiences had failed. Cloning was first tried in 1938 by a German embryologist, Han Spemann, yet it failed. It was not until 1970 when cloning became possible. The first animals to be cloned were frogs, and over time, cows, pigs, a sheep (only Dolly), and monkeys have been successful. For example, Dolly, born July 5, 1995, was the first mammal to be successfully cloned out of 200 embryos, at Roslin institute in Scotland. The team that created her, led by Scotsman Ian Wilmut, hoped to create an animal whose cells were genetically young again, rather than prematurely adult, but on February14, 2006, six years later after she was born, they had put her to sleep. She was diagnosed with lung disease, however it’s a fairly common disease in sheep, she also had premature arthritis. Nobody knows if her death has anything to do with being cloned. Over 200 sheep failed embryos were thrown away, so if the failure rate was that high when we start to clone humans more than 200 embryos/200 human beings would die for just one embryo that would have the same DNA as someone else… think about it. The ones that may survive may die later, catch infections that’s soon leads to death, or have abnormities and many more Studies shown that 4 outta 12 cow birth mothers died. Just imagine human birth mothers, we would be killing many innocent lives. However the cloning of any species whether they are human or not its morally wrong no matter how beneficial to humanity as it may be.

This argument seems to be an ethical presentation of the purpose of cloning. However, most, if not all scientists agree that human cloning won?t stop there. While cloning organs may seem ethical, cloning a human is dangerous. Still, scientists argue that the intentions of cloning are ethical. On the other hand, there are many who disagree with those claims. According to those from a religious standpoint, it is playing God, therefore, should be avoided. From a scientific standpoint it is also very dangerous, as scientists are playing with human cells which, if done wrong, can lead to genetic mutations that can either become fatal to the clone, or cause it severe disabilities.
