In 1784, someone using a flintlock pistol shot Edward Culshaw. In those days, there were no bullets, as we know them. Gunpowder and a ball of lead were put into the gun’s muzzle and packed with paper wadding. A spark made when the gun’s hammer struck some flint at the back end of the barrel ignited the powder. When the constable examined Culshaw’s wound, he found a piece of newspaper used as wadding to pack the powder in the killer’s gun. The prime suspect in the killing was a man named John Toms. When a piece of newspaper found in Toms’ pocket was compared with the piece found in the wound, the pieces fit together like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Based on the evidence, Toms was easily convicted. The Toms case was probably the first in America in which ballistics was used to solve a crime.
Much like in Toms case, most investigations start with a crime having been committed. Forensic ballistics and firearm investigation start when there are bullets, cartridges, a weapon, or any combination of the above found at a crime scene. With the evidence, a crime lab can search for clues on these items that could lead to a suspect or possibly prove that the items were used in the crime. By comparing the markings on bullets or cartridges found at the scene with those fired from a suspect’s weapon, a ballistics expert can often determine if the rounds came from the same weapon. Just the act of cycling a cartridge through a weapon without firing it can leave permanent scratches in the case that are unique to the weapon.
When a suspect’s weapon is examined in the lab, it will be test fired into a box filled with cotton or a tank of water to provide the examiner with the bullets and cartridges with a known history. Using a microscope, the known cartridges are compared with the ones in question. With some patience, skill, and a little luck, experts can definitively say that a certain firearm and no other fired this bullet, or ejected this cartridge.
The value of luck cannot be overstated. A bullet may leave the muzzle of a weapon at over a thousand feet per second and slam into a concrete wall. This may deform the round beyond all recognition. Just about anything can and does happen to flying projectiles.
The bullet as evidence is to be handled with much care as its surface can loose the imprint very easily. The bullets and shells are collected into the pillboxes or can be placed into the paper envelopes for a small period of time.
When the first responder got to the scene he adimatately meet the 911 caller, who lead him to a car in an apartment parking lot. The car doors were closed and all of the windows were fogged. The police officer used his flashlight to see inside of the car before opening the door. He found a young African American woman who had been shot several times. The officers quickly called for backup, investigators and medical personnel. While awaiting for their arrival he secured the crime scene with caution tape, creating an initial perimeter setup as discussed in lecture two. Once everyone arrived he left it to them to search the car while he talked to the 911 caller, witnesses and others who had information on who had been present in the car. The investigators were able to collect physical evidence of bullets and cartage casings that were found outside the vehicle and inside the vehicle on the floorboard of the driver’s side. The team determined the bullets came from a 40 caliber. Other types of physical evidence that were found on the scene were the bloody clothing on the victim, the victim’s cell phone and fibers in the car from the driver’s side. personnel at the scene crime took several photographs, powered test for finger prints and did a blood spatter analysis. Stewart’s autopsy revealed that she had been shot at close range in the left hand once and in the
The most easily recognized forms of firearm evidence could include the weapon itself, bullets, and cartridge casings. These alone can tell investigators the gauge of the gun, the manufacturer or marketer, and unique individual characteristics that can identify a particular firearm (Firearms evidence, n.d.). By looking a little closer at the bullet wounds themselves, investigators may also be able to find gunshot residue and gunpowder patterns. All guns are engraved with the serial number, and even if it has been filed away, it can be restored and identify the owner of the
The next step for AES is to establish a human resource information management (HRIM) system. A HRIM system will allow employees to access information contained in the HR manual through a company intranet. A HRIM system could also help AES employees track their training and development, look for courses to take, search for job openings or cross training opportunities throughout the company, and locate benefit information. As AES plants become more geographically dispersed, a HRIM system will help to communicate the company’s values and strategy to all employees.

The societal implication of the influence and prevalence of firearms in American society has affected the development of forensic sciences in the legal system. For over one hundred years, ballistics has played a prominent role in the courtroom. That is not to say that the topic of ballistics has gone unscathed or unchallenged in its history as a forensic technique. Although significant weight is put on the use of firearms, the topic of firearms as a whole has impacted the legal system just as much as any other technological advancement. Law has continuously been created and changed in order to parallel the development of firearm technology. As this technology advanced, law, through forensic ballistics, has attempted to quantify and identify the details of fired projectiles. Forensic sciences and firearm technology have competed in a constant battle to "corner the market" on the control of the influence of ballistics.
The story begins with the repeated sound of a clock saying “Today is August 4, 2026” (Bradbury, 1). The short story was written in 1950, and, at a basic level, Bradbury is predicting what will happen in the not-so-distant future, if humans continue with their technological ways. “There Will Come Soft Rains” demonstrates that the technological advances that could be used to make life easier for humans could also be misused and bring about mankind’s ultimate destruction. By making the house the focal point of the story, Bradbury shows that humans have made their technological knowledge work for them to make their daily lives orderly and carefree, merely for their own comfort. Before the nuclear explosion, the family that had lived in the house clearly had a life of comfort and ease. Ironically, the house itself pampered the family and had even done much of their thinking for them. Once the house, made by humans’ technological advances, started to function, it no longer needed humankind. The house ran itself so smoothly and orderly that it might have lived on longer if nature had not interfered and destroyed the house in the conclusion of the story. Jennifer Hicks states that, “the house is reduced to ‘smoke and silence,’ similar to the town which surro...
Organizational success or failure is dependent on a myriad of variables that can be challenging to measure and interpret. Success or failure can simply be luck and timing or an orchestrated and deliberate effort. As new technologies allow organizations the ability to rapidly measure and assess its internal and external environmental factors, more efficient strategies can be quickly implemented. The focus of this literature review is specifically on one of these mentioned variables. The paper will detail the relationship that Human Resources (HR) practices have with an organization’s strategic goals and vision.
Code of ethics act as a promise to protect and support the safety of individuals in society, supports as a leading light it help the supporters of an occupation, resolve ethical problems and act as a protector the community. A code of ethics discloses and conserves the current viewpoint professionals on in what way to make ethical decisions. It stresses importance on obligation to moral values and vital beliefs. Application of a code of ethics helps us to guarantee that members of the profession will be accountable for their actions. It helps us to learn about the responsibility we have for ourselves, our colleagues and to the social structure of the profession. It is essential that the present and future psychologist should be aware of the formal ethical codes of practices in psychology. The American Psychological Association (APA) developed this formal Ethics Code which demonstrates the approaches to the psychologist about logical, educational, and clinical behaviors to be followed while working as a licensed person. By applying the ethical code a psychologist can identify ethical issues, interrelate with others professionally. This can inhibit and solve ethical dilemmas, and he /she will be able achieve their professional protagonists and responsibilities.
As I said, the first concert that I attended was in Washington DC at the 9:30 club. The band who performed is a band from Sweden called Graveyard. This band mixes the genres of hard,
...inds to the evidence collected from the scene, looking for the unique similar striated and impressed markings. The examiners will also initially identify the class characteristics of the ammunition to figure out what caliber and shot pattern is dispersed by the firearm. That will then lead to examining the projectile and cartridge evidence by firing into a special water tank and cross examining the new standards to the crime scene standards. These standards are viewed side by side under a powerful macroscope to compare the unique markings to make a match. Gunpowder and primer residues can be tested from a suspects hand to determine if a firearm was recently used. Firearms identification can be a very complex scientific process that can be the key to solving a major crime for law enforcement.
The invention and innovation of small firearms spans throughout the world and throughout multiple centuries. The main inventions during the early phases of small arms development quickly gave way to the next innovation, although they were slow to be adapted to military use due to the cost of their production. As time went on these innovations became more and more stagnant to the point of there being no major innovations in the field for close to two hundred years. However, after this stagnant period, there began another period of advanced innovation in the area of small arms technology. The goal of this essay is to understand and dissect the innovations that occurred during these two periods of advanced innovation and the cultural and historical factors that lead to them.
Ethics play a major part in individual daily lives. Whether it is in an individual career, business, or family there are ethical values. Based on cultural, economics and religious differences many time the standards of ethics may vary. Some ethical values may be stronger and others may have few rules/laws they may abide by. Ethics are based upon a persons or groups moral principles, as we know some peoples’ morals should be questioned. This is the reason that large organizations have set in place their own ethical principles that they want their members to follow. Any profession that deals with psychology not only follows the organizational ethical rules but that of the American Psychology Association (APA). The APA refers to the ethical guidelines, Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. Students of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology also follow another set of ethical values known as the TCS Codes of Conduct. Both ethical guidelines focus on the “do’s and don’ts” of the psychology world and that of the school. Both altos discuss at length the consequences of an individual
There are many steps that have to be taken when leading a criminal investigation and investigating a crime scene. Firstly, detectives have to try and figure out why and how a crime was committed. They examine a crime scene looking for information or clues such as fingerprints, weapons, and DNA. They investigate the victims’ history to define why someone would want to harm them. After they have formed a hypothesis, they try to find proof that somebody committed a crime so that they can arrest the suspects. They look at both the cause and the actual evidence of the crime and try to see if their hypothesis makes sense. The suspects then enter the criminal justice system where they are tried using the evidence collected at the crime scene.
