Alcohol Abuse Among the Elderly Population
Alcohol abuse among the elderly is a widespread problem through the United States. It is hard to discover by physicians and medical providers, because many of these people have been abusing alcohol secretly for years. The population is extremely unlikely to admit that they have problems with alcohol, especially during a routine health care visit. As many as 15% of the population over 65 may be heavy drinkers, although this number is hard to pin down.
Elderly people usually drink due to depression, loneliness and lack of social support. Most alcohol abuse comes from a lifetime history; whereas others develop alcoholic drinking patterns later in life.
Alcoholism accounts for more than 15% of health care costs in the elderly. It is associated with an estimated 100,000 deaths per year in the United States. Alcohol consumption can produce both benefits and risks. In terms of benefits, men who drink two to six alcoholic beverages per week have decreased mortality rates and lower cardiovascular disease when compared with abstainers. On the negative side, two studies of 300,000 men demonstrated increased mortality among those consuming more than 2 to 3 drinks daily. Women, are more affected by less alcohol than men, perhaps because they have a lower blood volume, and so it’s distribution and decreased activity for gastric alcohol dehydrogenase are increased.
The primary care physician plays an important role in making the diagnosis and in helping the older alcoholic receive proper medical and psychological care.
As patients grow older, and develop conditions that require prescription and over the counter medications, opportunities for dangerous alcohol/drug interactions increase.
She feels loss from the deaths of her two sons. She becomes face to face with the conditions and symptoms of the plague as a health caretaker. Then she experiences a direct confrontation with the rising lunacy caused by the plague when her stepmother slashes one of her closest friends to death before killing herself. It’s remarkable that after all this pain and suffering, someone can endure the way she had. It was far from simple or easy, as the plague truly tested her wits to the core of her emotions. However, she prevailed in the end and had enough strength to live on in the name of all those in her life she lost. As previously stated the dire consequences resulting from the disease brought everyone to a mental state of survival. Everyone tried to display strength when their lives were at their most fragile. Whether in the form of not allowing the plague to spread by quarantining themselves or by trying to find a solution through spiritual violence, no one wanted to simply pledge fealty to King Bubonic. Despite experiencing loss, addiction, and wrongful love, Anne Frith lives

Ageism, a term used to assign negative labels to the elderly population has caused many of these older adults to internalize such stereotypes and thus, they have been less likely to seek out mental health and substance abuse care. Substance abuse, predominantly of alcohol, prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications is a growing health problem among adults age 60 and older and is a major concern that the country is facing. Even though the number of older adults suffering from these substance disorders is increasing, the situation tends to be overlooked or misdiagnosed by health care professionals and thus, inadequate treatment has not been provided to this population. One contributing factor to why substance abuse among older adults remains underdiagnosed is because indications of substance abuse in older individuals sometimes imitate symptoms of other medical and psychological disorders common among this population such as depression, dementia, and diabetes (Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, 2012).
Alcohol is a common consumption for a lot of people some more than others. Alcohol-associated cognitive impairment has negative long-term cognitive effects and impairments on our brains. Lucky enough for me, I have never had a family member or friend that has or currently deals with Alcohol-related dementia. With that said, I have no personal experience or knowledge on anything alcoholic related, but since entering college I have seen some people always turning to alcohol to help calm stress or to drink their “problems” away. Since entering this class I have learned a lot about different disorders and how popular co-occurring disorders actually are and with that comes a person’s mental health. Those who suffer from co-occurring disorders usually
Briggs et al. (2011) note that "as with all substance-abusing clients, successful treatment planning is wholly dependent on accurate screening, assessment, and diagnosis. The complications of the aging client require a skilled and knowledgeable practitioner" (p. 118). Since many older adults do not visit a mental health professional as a part of their wellness plan, the burden is often on medical professionals to see the warning signs of substance use and abuse in older patients and refer them to treatment.
There are many populations at risks for alcohol and drug abuse. Adults transitioning from middle to later life is one population that is at risks more than ever for alcohol and drug misuse and abuse. It is believed that in years to come, there will be a great increase in numbers as it relates to the amount of adults who are misusing and abusing substances. The purpose of this paper is to explore and discuss the prevalence of substance misuse and abuse among older adults. Different treatment approaches and ways to advocate for this population will also be discussed in the text. This paper will also attempt to explain the factors correlated with the increased risk of substance misuse for this population. Research data will also be presented that explains the reasoning off all
Alcoholism is known to be one of the largest illnesses that affect individuals in the world today with nearly 32 million Americans who have struggled with it in one year alone. It is becoming a much larger problem that is reoccurring and wiping out a large portion of the population. Some individuals might think that excessive drinking isn’t a problem, but others find that it is completely

When people travel to a destination, they sure have some motivation to motivate them to make the decision. ‘Motivation’ is the key term that will make the tourist to consider the reason to travel around. During the decision making process, people will consider some of the reasons before they confirm travel to a destination. The research that has conducted in The Netherland found out a remarkably high propensity to travel, 70% of the populations are taking one holiday per year and 24% was taking two holidays per year for holiday. Some of the people will affect their decision making by looking at destination image or some of the impact advertising. On the internet, business people will use image and advertising to attract tourist to travel to the destination by using image that they edit before. This is part of the marketing to promote their country to tourist. For family traveler, they will consider the distance and transportation travel to the destination.
