Women in World History
After reading the works of Hughes and Hughes, Ward, and Pomeroy, it seems as though all the information is congruent in the readings. The facts presented in Hughes and Hughes that also exist in the works by Pomeroy and Ward. The repetition solidifies the facts as stated by all three authors. The reoccurrence between the three pieces shows similarities. The similarities show the reader the strength of the information. Women of ancient Egypt had some of the same rights as men, they could rule as long as they showed some masculine traits to help the people understand why they were in power.
In Ward and Pomeroy’s texts, there is information that the Egyptian women had the same legal rights as the Egyptian men. “The women of the family could not only administer the family property, but could also dispute legal decisions and be major litigants defending what they conceived to be their rights of inheritance” (Ward 7). The women of ancient Egypt were able to accomplish a lot on their own. It was possible for fathers to leave property to their daughters in their wills so that the daughter could be self sufficient, should the need arise. A wife could even help run the estate with her husband. Women were also allowed to attend parties where men were present. This was an uncommon practice that women of ancient times were not allowed to do, the women would have to leave the room. Traditionally women were not allowed to be seen in the presence of a group of men, except in the case of the women of ancient Egypt.
Aside from social privileges, women were also granted economic privileges. Traditionally a wife would be dependent upon her husband for economic support, however the women of ancient Egypt were not completely dependent.
Should a divorce take place, the legal system moved in to assure a fair settlement….First, the husband and wife each took back whatever property they had contributed at the time of marriage. Second, any additional property that had accrued during the marriage was divided between them: two-thirds to the husband, one-third to the wife. In this way, the woman became financially independent, did not have to return to her own family, and might even be considered a good prospect for a second marriage (Ward 7).
In early Egypt civilization women and men were looked at as equal. In early Egyptian art there are evidence of tombs, and temples that illustrate men and women were seen doing activities together in unity depicting equality and harmony (Mason).
He wanted the show Conor that the convoluted thoughts of a person can interfere with ones life, only when accepting the facts of why those thoughts were can a person move on with life. The monster teaches Conor his indirect message by telling him stories of which all add to form an ideology of contradiction of thoughts. Also the Monster gets through to his message by his constant repercussions in Conors journey. However those repercussions turn to predictable actions in which the monster to tries and tell Conor to except his thoughts by telling the truth about how they came to be and move forward in life By doing so the monster can be a symbolized as a father/teacher in the book. Unlike in most other books the monster is always represented as a horrible figure. Patrick ness as the modern writer he is tried to help indicate a new purpose to an infamous archetype. Litt, throughout this entire passage, uses his words to wrap around the point that he is trying put across, as well as the absence of a familiar plot structure, in which there is a rising action, climax, and resolution. The final line of the story, “The monster had no story, unless being a monster is story enough.” (Mays 243), sells what the author is trying to say. After reading through, and learning only tidbits of important information needed to answer any questions asked, the audience is given this simple, incomplete ending. The reader is told that not only do the answers of these questions not matter, but that there really was no point in the first place, unless that point was that we didn’t need one. Readers are left wondering what will become of the monster, and maybe feeling as if important time was just wasted. There is no profound climax or moral impact, for the reader or the monster to experience. The monster learns nothing new of itself, and seems content with that fact. Most women in ancient Rome were viewed as possessions of the men who they lived with. Basically they were handed from their father to their new husband at the time of their marriage and submitted any property they owned, or dowry they were given, to their husband. There were however two types of marriage in ancient Rome, Manus and sine Manus. Under the first type, Manus, the woman and all of her property and possessions were placed under the control of her husband and he could do with them how he pleased. Under the second type, sine Manus, the woman remained under the control of her oldest male relative, usually her father or brother. This type of marriage gave women a lot more freedom because they could carry out their own cash businesses, own their own property, and accept inheritance money (Gill, 5).
Finally, Brooks' argument of "What Is a Monster?" explores how we negotiate the core "lack" of meaning in life, and how our transfer from the wholeness of the imaginary order and our mother spawns a search for completion. Through what we think are meaningful connections and uses of language to fulfill our needs, we really are pushing ourselves away from our goal by putting excess meaning between ourselves and our unconscious desires.

In fact there is evidence in the 1st century BC of Priene, a woman named Phyle became the first woman in office as a crown bearer, who also paid for a cistern to store water, and water pipes for the city( “A Woman in politics: Phyle, Wife of Thessalos”, page 227). In addition there was evidence of a female philosopher named Hipparchia from the city of Maroneia, a female doctor and midwife named Phanostrate, from Athens in the 4th century BC, and a harpist named Polygnota from Delphi in 86 B.C. ( “A Woman Philosopher: The Life of Hipparchia” page 227; “ A Professional Women: Phanostrate, Midwife and Doctor”, page 227; “ A Professional Woman: The Theban Harpist Polygnota, Daughter of Socrates”, page 228). In addition there have been discovered letters dated back from 90-120 AD, which were actually birthday invitations from an officer 's wife named Claudia Severa to her friends and sister . With these sources, one can’t conclude that females had no other roles in the ancient world. Although a majority of women were forced into the life bearing kids and just caring for the household, because that was the ideal role that was given to them and there was no other role to look up to, not all females were restricted that life. 1.) The Raven is by a man sitting alone in his house. Late one night, the man hears a tapping sound at his door. At first he thought it is merely someone coming to visit him. Instead of opening the door, he began to think of his lost love Lenore. Who has recently passed away.The man begins to fear what is on the other side of the door. But ends up working up the courage to open the door and all he sees is darkness. He continues to hear the tapping, so he checks the window. An then out of no where a raven comes flying in and lands above his door. The man asks in a scared voice to the raven what its name is. The raven answers, Nevermore. The man began to ask the raven about Lenore and if she was in Heaven, the raven repeated, Nevermore. Which angered the man. But the man finally realized that the bird will never leave because it represents his memory of Lenore which will also never leave him. It is like a curse that will stay with him unless he learns to forget. If he doesn't the raven will continue to be that sad sign hovering over him.

It can easily be seen that while men were considered to be the most powerful and wisest humans and gods, women had the power to significantly influence these men. From Uta-napishti's wife who convinced Uta-napishti to tell Gilgamesh about the plant that would make him young again to the examples mentioned above, several women were put in roles that had important effects on the men they encountered. Of course, this is not much different from the society we live in today. While many may believe that women have still not reached the point of true equality, it is hard to say that they are inferior and the significance of their roles in society is undeniable.
A woman was not seen as being equal to a man. This is clear in the laws dealing with marriage. Women were contractually obligated to remain with their husbands only, while their husbands were permitted to have a mistress or second wife. If a woman was caught with another man, she would be drowned (“The Code of Hammurabi”). Another thing that shows that women were not equal to men is the fact that they could be sold into slavery by their husbands at any time. Women did, however, have some rights such as the right to own property and the right to inherit and pass down that property. They also played very important roles in society. In Pharonic Egypt, women were the legal equals of men. They were not denied any rights in accordance of the law because of their gender. Women, like men, could own property, coming into it either through inheritance, as a payment for goods or services, or through purchase. Women could buy houses and goods, and with them, they were allowed to do as they chose. Being landholders and people of property afforded ancient Egyptian women a reasonable amount of social freedom. They could travel about freely in towns without veiled faces. In their own homes, women could move about as they pleased, they were not forced to remain in one section of the house or forbidden from other common areas as they were in other societies of the time.
Today, the world is changing fast in many ways, and the most rapid change that is seen within our society is technology. It is imperative that businesses stay on top of what is new and how they can better their company’s outlook by presenting their information in the fastest and most reliable ways. With the two major computer programming languages of today, C++ and Java, which is better for businesses to be able to acquire such speed and consistency?
When it came to the rights of these women, they really didn’t have any at all. In Greece women were considered to be second class citizens at best. All women were forbidden to own property, inherit their own name, vote, or attend political debate. Men viewed them as nothing of real importance. To them they were irrational, fearful, and only to be used for their physical desires. They were considered to be the ward of a man (Sacks 263). Women in Egypt were treated fairly well compared to the others. They shared the same legal and economic rights as men they were capable of owning land, slaves, and could acquire possessions for themselves in many ways. Elite women did have more rights and opportunities than the nonelite but they were both very fortunate. Regardless of class though, all women had only a few main concerns and expectations. They were all expected to get married and raise a family, maintain the management of the household, and bearing and rearing children (Harrison 510).
