Teaching Philosophy
When I was growing up I wanted to be everything I could think of from an astronaut to a doctor. You name it and I wanted to be it. I could not make up my mind and even as I started college no decision fro my major was made. I waited two years until coming to the realization that I would like to teach. A small girl in Wal-Mart helped me come to this realization. I did not even know who she was, but somehow she caught my attention. The first time I looked at her I saw nothing, just an ordinary girl, but something made me look again. When I did the girls’ face was glowing like she was an angel and then she just smiled. The person most responsible for the success of progressivism was John Dewey. This approach stimulated schools to mold education to the needs and interest of the students. After the launching of Sputnik progressivism was looked down upon to go back to traditional instruction with defense-related subjects. Progressivism came back with renewed popularity in the 1960’s and 1970’s, however; in the 1980’s and 1990’s traditional approaches dominated the nations schools again.
I intend to have classroom management, the curriculum, teaching methods, and ways of evaluating my students all following the progressives approach. I believe that the classroom should be student centered so they feel free to make decisions on their own. After all, education is for the students so they should have some say in how they want to

I will plan a lesson that arouses the students’ curiosity and then push them to a higher level. I will take the children on educational trips that will let them interact with nature or society. Also, I will stimulate interest with thought provoking games. Such as a form of monopoly, which will make learning easier to grasp.
There are several different methods for teaching the curriculum properly. They are scientific investigation, decision-making, problem solving, critical thinking, cooperative learning activities, and the project method. I believe that every one of these is important to the different learners. I will incorporate all of these teaching methods in my classroom because every student learns differently. I do not want to leave anyone out.
Evaluating the student is very important, because you have to know what the students have learned. Evaluations can range from tests to observations, either way they need to be given
During the Renaissance, Catholicism was the main religion of Europe and the church was the main authority. As the rebirth continued, the population started being smarter and finding out information for themselves. Martin Luther, a protestant, spoke out against the Catholic Church for its abuses by pinning up the 95 these to prove his point of sola scriptura and faith alone. Therefore, the Protestant Reformation began in Europe, which made the Catholic Church very powerless and led to the Catholic Reformation. Although Luther had strong points about breaking away from the Catholic Church, the church had mostly a success to bring back Catholicism due to the reform and using Jesuits to spread the Catholic religion around the world.
With the creation of the printing press Martin Luther’s ninety-five theses spread across Europe confirming people’s beliefs and strengthening their thoughts that the Pope and the Catholic Church were corrupt. Luther nailed his ninety-five theses to the door of the Wittenberg Castle church around 1517 with only the thought of reforming the Pope and the Catholic Church, but it became the foundation of the Protestant Reformation, the creation of a new religion called Lutheran, a branch of Protestantism. Progressivism also considers the interests of the students to help improve society and the students individual. It organizes schools around the concerns, curiosity, and real world experiences of students. Teaching in a progressivist classroom will help students reach their full potential causing them to feel capable of doing more complex subjects in their future lives. Although no one really knows exactly nor does anyone agree 100% on when the progressive era started in education, the general consensus is that the progressive era started between 1890 and 1919 (Net Industries, 2013). However, the man who had the principal impact on the progressivism in education was John Dewey (Net Industries, 2013). According to the philosophy and Dewey, the main purpose of education is to teach individuals how to be effective members of society and to teach people the knowledge as well as the skills that they will need to lead a productive life (Pappas, 2013). As a philosophy, progressivism makes a lot of sense. In order for individuals to learn skills that they may need to effectively solve problems, they must first be taught those skills, and this is done through education.
Progressive education was a movement based on an emphasis of learning by doing. This style of learning was more about hands-on projects and more experimental learning with groups that will help sharpen social skills. It was a style that allowed teachers to teach the content areas around the needs of the students. John Dewey was a huge supporter and promoter for progressive education. Dewey stated in his journal My Pedagogic Creed, “I believe that the true education comes through the stimulation of the child’s powers by the demands of social situations in which he finds himself.”(Vol. 54 p.77) He believed that all learning took place based on the social situations a kid was presented. Dewey started schools in Chicago that were based on the progressive movements. The school actually combined to teach future teachers this style and approach to education. Dewey stated “This process begins unconsciously almost at birth, and is continually shaping the individual’s powers, saturating his consciousness, forming his habits, training his ideas, and arousing his feelings and emotions.”(Vol.54 p.77) He believed that the set-up of schools should be designed and taught around the real-life and occupational based on community surroundings. Along with the help of other school reformers such as Ella Flag Young, they tried to change school systems throughout the country.
Thornton puts a stress on the need to implement this curriculum on a more conceptual level rather than a contextual approach (which in lines up with progressive ideology). “Education is a social process; education is growth; education is not preparation for life but is life itself.” John Dewey describes and supports progressivism, an education philosophy that I professionally identify with. Progressivism is a student centered philosophy that focuses on experiences, opportunities, and values that enhance a student 's learning and life. The role of the teacher is to act primarily as a facilitator of learning, they encourage and guide students to explore and promote individual development. As a future educator I believe it is important to involve students and allow them to take responsibility for their own learning and achieving their goals. The role of the student is to discover, engage, and express themselves.
Education serves as the foundation to a lifetime of learning. Since every child is unique, I believe that it is important for them to learn in an environment that is both secure and stimulating. By creating this type of atmosphere, the students will be able to realize their intelligence and use it constructively. As a future educator, it will be my goal to establish a classroom that is, 1) non-authoritarian, 2) student-centered, and 3) focused around student experience. These three elements are part of Progressivism, the educational philosophy I plan to incorporate in my classroom.
This could be seen most clearly in England as Henry VIII proceeded to break from papal authority and establish the Church of England. Changes could also be seen throughout society as the Protestant emphasis on the individual reading of the Scripture placed a demand on improving literacy. Additionally, both Catholics and Protestants in their zeal to defend their faith, targeted religious minorities such as Jews and Muslims. The initial challenges to Catholic orthodoxy were meant to reform the practices of the church, but ultimately led to a schism in European Christendom. The split in European Christianity resulted in far-reaching political and social changes. Each of the early reformers faced opposition from both the Church, the secular rulers, and their own communities. The initial skepticism of the these groups quickly gave way to more hostile reactions which included excommunication, being shunned or in extreme cases being put to death. Financing their movements was also an issue. They required the patronage of a state or national ruler to back their cause. On Oct. 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the door of the castle church at Wittenberg, inviting debate on matters of practice and doctrine. Luther's action was not yet a revolt against the church but a movement for reform within. It was, however, much more than an objection to the money-grabbing and secular policies of the clergy. Luther had already become convinced that in certain matters of doctrine the purity of the ancient church had been perverted by self-seeking Popes and clergy. Luther challenged the Catholic Church's practice of the sale of "Indulgences" which would enable a person to be excepted from God's punishment for his sins if he paid the Church a sum of money. The future of our nation rests greatly on how we educate our children. The children of today will soon be the driving force of tomorrow. In order to properly prepare our future citizens of society, we must provide them with an education that teaches them not only the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic, but also social skills and critical thinking. Progressivism offers this approach of educating the “whole child.” This student-centered approach to learning applies learning in a social manner and allows students to apply what they are learning to real life. This type of learning is much more meaningful than rote learning. Curriculum and assessment are based on the child and their level of interest and ability, and instruction is varied to adjust to different learning styles. Children learn by doing, and progressivism believes in incorporating a hands-on approach to learning. The teacher in the progressive classroom is not a dictator but more of a mentor and guide to the student. She takes the children into consideration in everything she does and allows them to offer their input. The progressivist teacher also facilitates social interaction among the students and groups them together for projects so that they may learn how to work cooperatively. Progressivism is the key to a more educated, better-rounded society.
My philosophy of education is a combination of essentialism and progressivism . I feel that knowledge can be learned from a textbook, but I also want my students to use other means of knowledge. I fell in certain times, I should be the center of the classroom and other times, the students should be the center. Education is about the students and I am there to guide them through their journey. I think it's important to let children learn by exploring. By doing this, they choose what information is important and should be retained. When it comes to learning, students should always be in the center. The teachers are only there to mentor and improve upon a child's skills. In my mind progressivism with a mix of essentialism is the best philosophy for me to follow.
