An educational philosophy is a conceptual framework of personal and professional beliefs. Experiences both inside and outside of the classroom will alter this philosophy. An educator’s philosophy is ever changing and should be reviewed and rethought periodically. However, at this philosophies core some elements should never change. This paper will attempt to shed light on what I believe to be concrete elements of any good teacher’s philosophy. While investigating my personal thoughts and desires as to how I hope to achieve maximum learning. My personal strategy to develop self-motivated learners.
Concord College prepares it’s education majors well. We have been given a proper foundation to build upon. We have been taught the proper methods and theories. While given an opportunity to develop our skills through it’s teaching internships and assignments. The Concord College Teacher Education program’s goal is to build “informed thoughtful decision makers.” This goal has been met. The importance of constantly making proactive, interactive, and retroactive decisions has registered with me. What is illuminated in my mind is the fact that teaching is both and art and a science. In this case the science is what I have coined as concrete elements of a good teachers philosophy. While the art is how I will manage to manipulate my personal teaching characteristics to the maximum benefit for students.
The science or concrete elements of my philosophy is basically what all good teachers must do. This is not should do, but must do. The first is to know their subject matter extensively. They must know general teaching strategies and search for or develop new teaching strategies. Teachers must use the appropriate grade level and take in account the ability levels of a class. Teachers must be sensitive to each individual students culture, socio-economic level, gender, and ability level. For all of these items effect student learning and the classroom. Perhaps, the most important element is knowing how students learn. Teachers must have the ability to incorporate many different styles of lesson plans and keep every single student in mind when designing the plans.

These concrete building blocks of teaching are just that the foundation of good teaching. However, teachers should not strive to be good. They must strive to be experts in their perspective field. To become and expert, teacher must read their texts and professional educational journals. We must participate in educational discussions often. As a young teacher, but not to exclude the seasoned teachers, we must listen. Listen to our mentors and fellow teachers with improvement being at the forefront. We must think and use common sense in all our adventures in education.
The art of teaching is how I will manage to manipulate my personal teaching characteristics to the maximum benefit for student needs. Here, it is necessary to list and define what I believe my potential personal characteristics will be. As rookie teachers some of our desires are lofty. We think we are going to teach and save the world. Often professors have told us that it’s not going to happen. Saving the world, perhaps not. I do know that I have the ability to reach numerous students and that is enough. Do not tell me that my efforts will be in vein. Simply put, I don’t know how to quit and I never will.
Consistency is a great personal characteristic. If a teacher is consistent, then students know what is expected of them at all times. Teachers must post and state daily obtainable but challenging objectives. Students must be able to see what they should be able to do at the conclusion of class. Failure is unacceptable, students can achieve much more than they perceive. It is our duty as teachers to foster an atmosphere where they believe in themselves. Help the students to identify and overcome barriers to learning. Being positive with each student is essential. No matter how much they get on your nerves. This positive ness and openness will develop relationships with students inside and outside the classroom. I had mentors when I was young, perhaps I can be a mentor for someone else. Hopefully, many people will look to me for help and understanding with little or no judgment. Creating a community atmosphere and teamwork in the classroom and throughout the school would be a huge benefit for all involved. The problem is as a rookie teacher, we have yet had enough experience to make all these things take shape. So achieving all of these goals will take time to allow for repetition and conditioning.
Physical and Health Education is my major. However, I would love the opportunity to teach a Civics course. There is a need in public schools to develop leadership skills, character development, and perhaps touch on morals. Volunteerism and selfless service are aspects of life I hold dear. I would like to share and promote those values. Again, and educator’s philosophy is ever changing and should be reviewed and rethought periodically. I hope that I don’t find this philosophy paper amusing in a couple years.
