Grammar in the Classroom A large part of an English teacher’s job deals with helping students find their own voices amidst the many teachings of their parents and peers. A student’s voice can be their values, their interests, and their perspectives of the world in which they live. Their voice can be their critical questioning of the many situations they face, whether in a text, the school cafeteria, or a park after school. It is the job of an English teacher to aid in finding this voice through their writing. It is by putting words and thoughts down on paper that a student can sometimes feel comfortable enough to take risks and find their true voices. Although traditional grammar instruction has long been thought to improve this skill, this is no longer the case. Instead, by providing a classroom environment in which students are immersed in classic literature from many genres including poetry, short stories, and novels, students will learn how to harness grammar for their own purposes of finding their voice in their writing. Rather than teach grammar initially and hope that students connect their drilling exercises of subjects and verbs to the poem they’re working on, teaching the varieties of literature first allows students to gain first-hand experience and familiarity with grammar already in practice. This is not to say that grammar lessons and terminology should be lost altogether. A student will not be better off if they never learn subject-verb agreement. However, their exposure to examples of these uses should come first, leaving the labeling and grammar jargon to a time when their minds have already seen how these nouns and verbs can be used. That’s the key phrase: can be used. Students need to understand that they have control and authority over their work. They should have space enough to understand that although a sentence should be written in a certain way, it does not always have to be straightforward grammar if they’d like to change something stylistically. For example, while teaching a lesson on the poem "l(a" by E.E. Cummings, students might be confused and puzzled as to the form of this unusual piece. However, they should then be invited to challenge Cummings’s lack of traditional grammar and stylistic choices. Some may be angry at its unique appearance, while others may grasp the significance of the form and its effect on the reader.

Strunk and Whites’ book took a simple approach, while Williams went more in-depth, with elaborate explanations and varying choices for each writing style.
Recently, I had a chance to read one interesting web comic called the God of Cake, written by Allie Brosh. The plot is basically about one girl who loves to eat cake and willing to do anything for only a piece of cake. The God of Cake describes the writer’s childhood experience, as well as, reminds me of myself. This leads to the identification of myself to the girl character in the story.

Aristotle was a Greek Philosopher and a student of Plato and also a teacher to Alexander the Great. Aristotle had a major impact towards the groundwork for western philosophy. He was also a scientist, but not our ideal scientist today. He believed that knowledge could be obtained through interacting with physical objects. He also concluded that objects were made up of a potential that circumstances then manipulated to determine the object’s outcome. Mostly all of this information was acquired from
Aristotle is considered to be one of the most influential philosophers in many subjects; one of these subjects being political theory. He has influenced the way we run our government and how politicians think. His works and opinions still continue to greatly influence our current government in a large amount of ways. His contributions to our government are very prominent, but he is often not credited. Even though his ideas did not create an instant effect, his beliefs slowly established a spot in today's society.
However, Aristotle was the most influential historical figure in the creation of the Athens government. The government of Athens was a democracy, this means that the government was directly related to the people. Once Aristotle started to gain the popular support, the people inflicted their new views on the government. His teachings covered a variety of topics, including political views, which are most overlooked in modern times. He had profound ideas that were loved by most Athenians. Aristotle tutored Alexander the Great. Alexander the Great then went on to conquer lots of land for the Greek government. As time went by, the government began to despise Aristotle for the power of knowledge he was giving the people. The government then sentenced him to life in prison for changing the people’s political views on god. Aristotle escaped to a remote island and lived out the rest of his days. To say that Aristotle had no direct influence over the government would be an outrage. He was the most transforming figure in greek political history, he changed the way the government system was govern and looked at by the
Hospitality is the relation between the guest and host, or the act or the practice of being hospitable. This includes the reception, entertainment and generally looking after the guests, visitors or strangers. The word hospitality is derived from the Latin hospes which means “host”, “guest”, or “stranger”. Hospes is formed from hostis which means stranger. Today in many areas hospitality has developed in various ways, no two ways of hospitality are the same such as in India the term atithi devo bhava is used and guest is considered god like and we are told to respect them as such by touching their feet, in other countries such as the western people prefer a handshake and hospitality is more formal. This is one of the few industries that are directly involved with serving its customers in many significant areas for their wellness that are eating, drinking and sleeping which are some of the most important needs of an individual that a hospitality professional looks after, these are basic things we can provide but the times are changing we are in the 21st century now and the hospitality industry has as any industry been heavily impacted by it. Technology today has completely changed the industry which is why it is important to see which sectors have been affected, where many things have been changed and a new generation of professionals has emerged, which understands it and continues to expand it. This project has given me a new insight into the types of technology that are emerging to improve not only the experience of the guest but also the employees in this industry and their employers. This is why I have chosen five technologies which vary in functioning and development the technologies are Global Positioning Sys...
Based on his writings, Aristotle is considered to be a metaphysicalist. Aristotle wrote a great number of papers about logic such as Categories, the De interpretatione, and the Prior Analytics. Aristotle claimed to be the founder of logic based on his writings from these books. Aristotle also believed that happiness is the ultimate purpose of human life. Aristotle defined moral virtue as “a disposition to behave in the right manner and as a mean between extremes of deficiency and excess, which are vices. We learn moral virtue primarily through habit and practice rather than through reasoning and instruction.” Aristotle also believed in many scientific phenomena as well. Such phenomena as the earth being the center of the universe. The list for Aristotle’s beliefs and views could span on for over a million words, but we will not discuss all of those
Greek philosophers Aristotle and Plato were two of the most influential and knowledgeable ancients in our history. Their contributions and dedication to science, language and politics are immensely valued centuries later. But while the two are highly praised for their works, they viewed several subjects entirely differently, particularly education practices, and human ethics and virtue.
The study showed that both traditional and alternative grammar curricula failed to provide students with a better understanding of applied grammar than free writing and reading. The study compared the success of three writing programs (traditional grammar, alternative grammar, and free writing and reading) by testing the students in essay writing, sentence structure, usage, spelling, reading comprehension, vocabulary, literature, and attitudes. The only test score that varied was attitude, which was significantly higher in the group that focused on reading and writing in place of grammar exercises (Elley). A positive attitude is an essential aspect of a successful student, without it, students lose the motivation to
For teachers, this allows them to evaluate the student’s work. The nice part of the Glossing process is that grammar instruction is individualized. The teacher can assist students individually while others fill out their “Glossing Sheets.” This process also allows the teacher, depending on the grade, to steer the process based on what they are teaching their students. For instance, Johansen and Shaw explain how a freshman teacher may highlight fragments and run-ons in their students’ papers while a senior teacher might highlight parallelism (98). However, to keep students from feeling overwhelmed by the amount of grammar rules, a list of twenty most difficult grammar rules for students in 9th to 12th grade was created, English Conventions Rule Sheet. Based upon this list, the teachers would go through the student’s compositions and highlight the rules that were violated. Johansen and Shaw conclude the article with the results of their research which consisted of students understanding the Glossing process, a better understanding of the grammar rules, or finding the process tedious yet
