As I go through lists of careers, I search for the one I will make my profession. As a freshman in college, I enrolled in Marshall University with the goal of being a neonatal registered nurse. I felt like working in the labor and delivery section of a hospital would be an amazing experience. At some point, I realized that I wanted to have a family and children someday. I want to have a life with them, but that would be difficult because as a neonatal nurse, I would be required to work through holidays, weekends, and nights. I sat down with a pencil and some paper and began to write. I wrote different professions and what they had to offer. Something kept pulling me back to the education field. At that time, life seemed difficult, so I moved back home with my parents and enrolled in Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. There I started taking classes in education and spending much of my time working with the Wyoming County Head Start Program, where I participated in field trips, activities, and often helped teach lessons. I loved the children. I have found that there is no greater feeling than the love of a child. Over the past year and a half, I have begun working with children in many different ways. I have begun to teach children about God at my church. One parent told me that it is the greatest compliment in the world for a parent to trust you enough to let you teach their child, and an even greater compliment if they trust you enough to let you teach their child about God. At that point everything made sense. My path in life was decided, and my goals were set. I realized I wanted to teach young children.

My goals for the education profession are very simple to define. My largest priority right now is to attain my Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. After my degree, I want to teach in the West Virginia Public School System. As a teacher, my largest goal is to be a good teacher. I want to treat each child equally.

I never want to forget what it was like to be in the shoes of my students, and use my experiences in a way that helps me teach. I want to see the spark of understanding in my student’s eyes as learning takes place. My goal is to know what I am teaching so well that it comes naturally to me and I can convey the information to the children in a way they can understand. I want to be creative and innovative. My goal is to have a classroom that makes my children want to come to school and not want to leave. I want my classroom to be happy. I want to know my students. My goal is to know what is going on in their lives. My goal is to be close enough to my students that they can come to me if they have a problem. My goal is to be real with them.

My philosophy in education is somewhat eclectic. I have found that my strongest points are in essentialism and progressivism. I believe that children have to be taught the basics in order to understand reality. I feel like the classroom curriculum should be centered around the basic and essential knowledge that a child needs. I agree with the famous articles like “A Nation at Risk,” and “Tomorrow’s Teachers.” I feel that we, as Americans and teachers, need to teach children the basic fundamentals in order to lay a secure foundation, or America will be left behind. In those respects, I am an essentialist. On the other hand, I am progressive. I believe in teaching methods that are creative and innovative. I want my children to love learning as much as I love teaching. I am a kinesthetic learner, so I refuse to lecture, I want them to see, do, and understand. I want my students to be friends and know each other. I want to take my students places and let them see things they would not see otherwise. I love cooperative learning. I think it is great when children work together. I think it would be great to do one project-based lesson per year. I want children to experience things. I want them to gain knowledge about reality as well as the basic subjects. I want to give them all of the knowledge they can withhold in a single year.

As you can see, I am a dreamer. I want to be the best teacher I can be. My goals are very high, and I intend to challenge myself. I love children, and I cannot wait to work with them full time. As for my philosophy, I believe that in order to be a good teacher, you have to want to do it, take time to do it well, and be willing to give it your all. I believe you have to teach more than the books, I think the children need to learn reality as well. I know that the Concord College Education Program will help me to better understand my philosophies of education in ways that allow me to raise my goals.
