“Be all that you can be. Find your future- as a teacher.” No, joining the army is not what Madeline Fuchs Holzer had in mind when she said this quote. Being all you can be in life requires dedication, responsibility and a desire to do what you love. Teaching is a profession that requires 110% from a person. I have the drive and ability to be the best that I can be as a teacher. There is not anything else I would want to do with my life besides teaching. I want to be a reflection to my students that they can be all that they can be. Another quote by Henry Adams, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” To be that type of teacher has been a lifelong goal for me. I want to make my mark in the world and this is my way of doing it. To have the ability to affect a child’s life for an eternity is something that not everyone can say they have accomplished. Teaching definitely is a profession that will affect eternity.

The main reasons for wanting to become a teacher would be my love for children, my family inspirations; God’s calling for me, and my love for learning. All my life I have enjoyed being around children. They have great spirits about them that makes me feel free spirited. Their innocence, undying energy and their love for life makes me take these characteristics and apply them to my own life.

Another motivation for me is the inspirations of my grandfather and my father. My grandfather died when I was very young and the one thing everyone has always said about him is his love of flying and teaching. His life was spent on teaching others and when he passed away he was remembered as being a great teacher devoting himself entirely to his family and his students. My father spent the first thirty years of his life going form job to job since he had not finished his schooling younger in life. At middle age he decided to go back to college and earned his degree in education. He felt that becoming a teacher he would be a testimony to children to continue their education to better their future.

I feel that everyone’s life is pre-planned for them before they are even born. What I believe is that God has our futures planned for us and it is up to us as individuals to listen to Him and accept our calling in life. He knows what is best for us and what we would be truly happy doing with our lives.

Another reason why I want to teach is to share my love of learning. Learning can and should be fun and I feel that I can make this possible in my classroom.

After graduation I plan to stay in this area and hopefully teach at a local elementary school. I plan to wait a few years and adjust to my new career before continuing my education to receive my master’s degree. I plan on being involved with the students by participating in extra curricular activities, such as, coaching a sport or getting involved with tutoring. I was involved with different extra curricular activities throughout school and I feel that these helped me to be more involved in the school community and it kept me focused on school and out of trouble. I feel that it is important for teachers to be involved with the students inside and outside of the classroom.

I am planning to join the NTEA to further stretch my goals as a substantial teacher. My goals as a teacher are to help my students identify their strengths and gifts as well as their weaknesses. I plan to help them find ways to overcome and strengthen these weaknesses. I feel our duty as educators is to empower children with the ability to take on learning and responsibilities for themselves. I also want to involve the parents and the local community as much as possible to build partnerships on behalf of learning. I feel that involving parents and the community is imperative to showing children that there are various means of educational support.

I want my classroom to be a safe and orderly environment for learning. I want my classroom to be a place where my students honestly want to be. It will be invigorating, inviting, educational and most of all fun! Every child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring and stimulating environment in which they can grow intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help my students reach their fullest potential in each of these areas. I plan to do this by being a role model for my students. Children learn by what they see, therefore, I plan to be the best overall person I can be inside and outside of my classroom. I want to instill good morals and values to my students. I want the children’s natural curiosity to help direct their learning. I will teach them to respect all things and all people. I will set fair and consistent rules initially and I will clearly state the importance of all activities. I will follow through with the rules that are set to show my place as the teacher. This will show the students respect for their presence and their time. Furthermore, it will teach them to respect themselves, others and their environment. I hope to have technology in my classroom to further educate my students for their future. In today’s society if you are not educated about computers or other technological advances, you will be lost. I feel to meet the needs of tomorrow we must educate and inform the children of today.

The philosophies that we studied in Education 210 that I feel will intervene with my own personal teaching style are progressivism and behaviorism. I like progressivism due to the respect for the individual. I like the idea that the movement stimulated schools to broaden their curriculum, making education more relevant to the needs and interests of the students. I will incorporate group-work, field trips and thought provoking games in my classroom, which are all aspects of progressivism. I believe in the progressivist strive to make schooling both interesting and useful. I also like the philosophy of behaviorism because it provides positive reinforcements whenever the students perform a desired behavior. I feel that this method would build self-respect and a feeling of self-responsibility within the students. I fell that a good sense of self-esteem is imperative for a child’s emotional health. Rewarding students for doing good work builds character and respect for themselves.

My personal viewpoint of the curriculum used in the classroom is that it should focus on the level of knowledge and grade level as well as the including the student’s likes and interests. The subject material is so important to keep the attention of the students. If they are not interested in what is going on then they will ignore the subject and will not learn what they need to know to progress. I feel that it is imperative for the teacher to know each and everyone of the students as an individual to be able to make the material fun and interesting to them. Of course this is a lot for one person to take on, but this is where the dedication of the teacher comes into play. Education is the key to success. I feel the overall purpose of education is to prepare our children of today to succeed and be knowledgeable in the future. The world would not be a very promising place without education. I feel that the following quote by John Dewey sums up the meaning of education, “Education is not preparation for life, education is life itself.”

The expected outcomes I have due to becoming an educator are fulfillment in my life, and to fulfill God’s calling for me. Self-respect for me for accomplishing my lifelong goal will be an enormous gratification to me. I will strive to be the best teacher I can possibly be to my students as well as be a great addition to my community. Learning is a necessity in life, and I feel that dedicated and high quality teachers are a necessity just as well.
