My Philosophy on Education

As an education major at State College, I’ve decided to become a teacher for several reasons. As I progressed through elementary, middle, and high school, many of my teachers were great role models for me. This has inspired me to become a role model for someone in the near future. My love for science and math has also influenced my desire to teach and make a difference in a child’s life. I want to teach students the subjects that I love so much. I want the feeling that I helped a child accomplish or learn something they couldn’t understand. One of the main reasons I want to become an educator is because I feel education has really lost teachers who truly love teaching and those who truly love teaching and those who have the desire to make a difference. I feel I can really help make a difference in the education world and bring back the love to teach.

My placement teachers and the teachers I have had throughout my life have definitely influenced my philosophy on education. Although my beliefs concerning education aren’t set in stone, I believe I have more of an Eclectic view on education. My beliefs tend to come from many of the different philosophies rather than one sole philosophy. One of the philosophical approaches I will take during my educational career is Perennialism. This is the traditional and conservative view, and its followers consider school to be an institution designed solely to develop students’ intellect. Perennialists generally follow the beliefs of Aristotle. The perennialist teacher must be a good reader and writer and encourage students to improve both of these skills. Three primary approaches to learning are stresses: didactic teaching of concepts such as, the operations and uses of mathematics; coaching of skills; and seminars in which various topics are discussed in depth through the Socratic method.

Along side of Perennialism, I will use Behaviorism. This will allow me to set rules and regulations to better prepare my students. This will benefit them because they will always be aware of circumstances of their behavior.

I want my students to be disciplined so that my classroom environment will be safe for all of them. This method will be effective because the students will not be aware that they are being disciplined.

With my eclectic view of education, I will establish an authoritarian classroom. This will make sure the students behave properly. I will not be a strict teacher, but instead a teacher who can be fun and at the same time, be in control of the class. I will expect my students to listen to me and follow my rules; however, I will allow them to have their say in establishing the rules and punishment to make things fair. I will keep the classroom organized in a way that allows them to learn and at the same time fun and interesting to the students.

I plan to establish discipline by establishing the rules the first day of class. The student will be warned when they misbehave and I will inform them they have two more chances. If a student continues to misbehave, I will cut his/her recess time according to the severity of the misbehavior. If a student misbehaves a third time, he/she will have to call his/her parents and explain to them what they have done and take the issue to the principal.

My teaching styles will change from student to student because of the different needs and learning styles. I plan to teach science and math and both subjects require different styles of teaching. I will try to incorporate many hands on activities and learning experiences to enhance the comprehension of the material for the student. I plan to teach my students until they fully understand and at the same time try not to overwork them. When teaching a lesson, I will help all students who seem to be struggling with that certain lesson. If a lot are having trouble understanding the subject, I will try a different teaching method and spend more time on the problem area. I intend to be the leader of my classroom, however; if I feel some students are excelling above others, I will allow them to help others.

I feel it is very important to praise students for good grades and good behavior. This positive reinforcement will encourage the students to continue to strive for good grades and behave appropriately. On the other hand, I believe it is also very important to reward those students who try their best and those who have improved. Giving prizes occasionally is a great reinforcement and will encourage students to try their best.

Another thing I feel is very important to be a successful teacher is getting involved with the school not only with teaching, but extracurricular activities. Getting involved with clubs and sports teams helps build your relationship as a teacher on a more personal level. When you have a personal relationship with your students, they are more likely to want to learn from your teachings and they learn to trust you more.

After graduating from Concord College, I plan to move to North or South Carolina to teach math and science at a middle school level. Along side of teaching, I plan to be involved with the school with extracurricular activities. I really want to coach cheerleading, volleyball, and softball. After establishing a sturdy lifestyle, I plan to return to school and get my master’s degree. I feel this is essential not only for myself but also for those who look up to me.

I am very much aware that teaching is full of many challenges and I plan to overcome these because I feel the positive factors of teaching definitely outweigh the negative ones. I think a positive impact on a child’s education is one of the best accomplishments a person can make and I will try my hardest to make plenty of impacts on children in the future.
