Sustainability is an issue that everyone should be concerned about. If the planet Earth is going to exist, as we know it, everyone should wake up and do their part to help achieve a greater level of sustainability. In my English 101 class we learned about the issue of sustainability. Many different topics were discussed and researched throughout the course of the semester. Overall, I think that the sustainability project has been a learning and enlightening experience for everyone in this class. Many more things can be done next semester, since the groundwork has been laid to continue this project for time to come.

One of my personal goals for the project was to learn as much as I could about the sustainability issue facing us. I did this by participating in all of the projects that were done throughout the semester. The main project that occurred during the semester was the personal sustainability goals that we each set for ourselves. While doing the actions that we pledged to do, we learned different things about sustainability that we never knew before. One of the things that I learned was that, at Clemson, it is hard for students who want to recycle to be able to recycle. There are not the necessary facilities nearby our student housing to place our recyclables. I also learned that some actions that should be done to be sustainable are hard to do in the society that we live in. One of these activities that we do is the needless driving that Americans do in general. Since we live in a moving society, it is sometimes hard to do. An easy thing that everyone can do is to recycle some of his or her wastes. This can be done for most people at little or no extra effort than just throwing your trash away.

Some of the planning that I did helped the students in other classes and even my own. During one part of the semester, we researched different ideas for the horticulture class students to implement in the schoolyard project that they were involved with. Others used my ideas and research in my class on their personal sustainability papers, university sustainability papers, and even their own personal goals to being sustainable.

Sustainability And Its Impact On Sustainability Essay

- In recent times, the practice of sustainability has heightened due to the overall condition of the world’s environment. The concept of sustainability is said to had found its roots from the Brundtland Report of 1987 (Hagedorn & Lütteken, 1999). The initial concept of sustainability slightly differs from its original motive. Initially, sustainability was established to promote environmental and agricultural awareness and to advise individuals of more efficient ways to save the environment. However, over the progression of years, the concept of sustainability has evolved into a more socio-economic approach (Hagedorn & Lütteken, 1999)....   [tags: Sustainability, Ecology, Natural environment]

Questions On Sustainability And Sustainability Essay

- Prior understanding about sustainability My initial understanding of the Sustainability was all only about saving the environment by adopting environment friendly “green” measures. My concepts of Sustainability measures limited to the companies spending in recycling and innovation in technology, which helps to do more with fewer natural resources, consumer behaviour and the legislations’ measures by framing the rules such as carbon tax to reduce the companies’ carbon foot print and from damaging the environment....   [tags: Sustainability, Sustainable development]

Environmental Sustainability, Economic Sustainability And Social Sustainability

- Every living thing is connected. Caught in a circle of cause and effect that is constant and continuous. Creating, helping, breaking, and using each other; doing so to the point where it is no longer sustainable, and we, as a human species, must search for a new way to live our lives in a manner where we no longer take more than we give, to live sustainably. Sustainability is society’s ability to support the quality of life indefinitely. - SUCCESSFUL SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION PRACTICES As the concept of education for sustainability has grown in global prominence, many schools and teachers are eager to implement sustainability education in the classroom. Environmental Sustainability Issues in the Olympics Essay

- The Centennial Olympic Congress of Paris recognized these problems and incorporated environment as a “third pillar” of the Olympic charter, along with sports and culture. The UN Environment Program (UNEP), now a veteran and influential player in this arena, was among the first to get involved with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to work towards environmental sustainability issues in the Olympics. Essay about The Global Environmental Sustainability Class

- I have learned so much during my time in the Key Global Environmental Sustainability class. I realized that service and sustainability are much larger than I originally thought. Sustainability can also manifest in so many different forms. Participating in service projects this semester was so rewarding and informative. Essay on Sustainability Is Becoming A Major Debate

- Sustainability is becoming a major debate in the united states and in the world as a whole. People are becoming more conscious of their surroundings and want to conserve the environment in order to keep the Earth healthy and to maintain diversity among the environment. In Christian Weisser’s “Sustainability,” he goes on to explain what sustainability truly is. Weisser does a good job in using pathos to persuade a typical college student in the validity of sustainability. Most college students and young people in general don 't think about sustainability too much....   [tags: Student, University, Psychology, Sustainability]

Essay on The Evolution Of The Theory Of Sustainability

- While the biblical story of Adam and Eve can be interpreted as one of the earliest writings of man’s harmful effects on nature (Prest, 1988), it was not until Malthus’ writings, in 1798, on ever increasing population that sustainability, as a concept, was broached in the modern era (Malthus, 1798). In the contemporary period however, sustainability has gained prominence as a theory in the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution in the form of green thinking (Whitehead, 2006). To examine the role this had on the evolution of the concept of sustainability, different schools of thought will be analysed in order to determine whether they have a relevance to today’s modern sustainability concept....   [tags: Sustainability, Ecology, Murray Bookchin]

In today’s world, the concept of sustainability plays a very important role in calculating, not only the economic and social social activities but also the business (marketing) activity more generally (Crane and Matten, 2004)....   [tags: Sustainability, Marketing, Term]

Some of the skills that I developed throughout this semester were from research skills, to web design skills. I have become better at web design and research from the different projects that I was involved with through out the semester. I also have acquired skills in group working from this class. Since many of the projects we did involved more than just one person, we had to be able to work with other people.

From this semester long project, some questions came up that were not really answered during the course of the work this semester. One of the ones that will probably never be able to be answered is why are some people so wasteful and have no concern for the things that they do for the environment. I have seen plenty of people just throw trash from their windows while driving to burning leaves when all they had to do was compost them. I see these and other harmful practices more than I did before the start of this project. With these questions and observations, next semester’s class could branch out to the community to educate the public and make available some of the resources that we have at the university to make them more sustainable too. Students next semester could also expand the recycling and sustainable actions that we did in our class to the rest of the university. To me, I think that next semester’s class could get more involved in the university to attain a point of sustainability. We might also be able to get jobs at the university that would help with this project. I know I would not mind one with the recycling department by helping with a more comprehensive recycling program at this school. I know that others would not mind the part time jobs of even collecting the materials that could be picked up from different locations and bringing them to the Kite Hill recycling center to be recycled.

As the end of the semester draws to a close, I am looking back at all I have learned in this class. This has been my most worthwhile English class I have ever taken. This class opened up the door for many more years’ work on an issue that everyone should be concerned about. I know as we continue this project next semester, I will be excited to see the work that we can and will accomplish on this project. There is much more work to do, but I know that I am ready to get more involved and make this a reality for Clemson University.
