Freshman year of high school always seems to be the tougher year. People you thought were friends end up changing their ways and become a whole new person. High school is when a person’s personality really shows. Everyone finds who they are inside, and they find others like them. Some try to move up the popularity pole, and will do anything to reach the top. Others seem to just fade away out of existence because of drugs. My friend Todd was one that just disappeared from my life.

At the beginning of freshman year, I didn’t know many other people at my school. All of my friends choose to go to another school that was in our district. I was in the cafeteria talking to one of my friends when she introduced me to a guy named Todd. We got to talking and found out we are a lot a like. We both planned on trying out for baseball in the spring, we live close to each other, and we went to the same middle school. Our humor was pretty much on the same level, I would try anything to get a laugh out of him.

After freshman year had ended, and we became best friends, I found out he smoked pot. This didn’t really bother me because he said he only did it a couple times a month. I knew he wouldn’t try to get me to do it because he was a true friend. He had a party right after school started up in August, and a bunch of our friends were there, and so was some of his that I had never met before. Weed and alcohol were at the party but he only asked me once if I wanted any. I told him no and he left it at that.

As school went on, he started to do it a little more. Again he would ask me more continuously if I wanted to do it. I held firm in my answer until he sat and smoked in front of me on night. I sat and watched him do it for a while. As all the smoke came out around me, I did feel a something, a little happier, like I didn’t care about anything at the time.

- Friendship I jumped into my bed, exhausted from my late-night babysitting job. It was past midnight, and I was looking forward to sleeping since I had to get up for work in about eight hours. A bad cold had hit me, just as it always does during the mid-spring season. I could hardly breathe, and my head was pounding. Pretty soon he started to get high everyday. Then it became a 24 hour a day thing. He would wake up and smoke, ditch classes to go smoke, after school he would smoke, and he would finally smoke himself to sleep. This was his normal routine everyday.

He grades started falling dramatically. He no longer cared about school, and began trying new harsher drugs. I learned all my knowledge about drugs from him, so I know he knew how bad acid is. He decided to take two gel caps of acid in one day. He always told me he would never try acid because of what it does to your brain. Plus if you take it four times in a month it totally changes who you are. I noticed the change in him. Slowly we stopped hanging out. I didn’t like his new friends, and he knew what he was doing was wrong. He would always feel bad when he told me what he did that day.

I know that everyone has to lose friends in their life. Usually it’s through a change in location though. It is very hard to loose the best friend I have ever had to drugs. He always told me he would never do anything more then weed. It sucked him in and it didn’t let go. After we stopped hanging out, I never really had a close friend like that. He really made me think, could this happen again? Could a new friend be caught up in the same type of life style? Watching a friend change in front of your eyes is a hard thing to watch. I know that drugs did change him.

My senior year I developed a very close group of friends. We always go out every night even if it’s just to a friend’s house to sit there and hang out. I know that none of them well be a drug addict like Todd, because we are always around each other. I also feel that I have made a few good friends here at school. I know they will not change on me either.
