I know plagiarism is something that isn't respected, condoned, or excepted in any part of the education process. Either is it tolerated in any type of assignment. Not only does it steal someone elses work, it robes yourself of the learning experience you can gain on the assignment. Plagiarism by definition is immoral and unethical. Plagiarism is: The submission of material authored by another person but represented as the students own work, whether that material is paraphrased or copied in verbatim or near-verbatim form. The submission of material subjected to editorial revision by another person that results in substantive changes in content or major alteration of writing style and improper acknowledgment of sources in essays, papers, or presentations(Sandra Rhoten).

Basically passing someone elses work as your own, and trying to get away with it. I understand first hand how easy it is to plagiarism someone elses work. If something is said or written in a way that would put your work to shame your instincts tell you must make that work your own somehow. I assume plagiarism has been around since first words were written, so I would imagine students who have writing assignments, and find good information would plagiarize to get the best possible. grade. Students must understand you must quote the writer and embellish on the subject.

Once your assignment is completed, your instructor would accept the work and note your excellent research skills. You would also be praised by your peers and received the grade you deserve, not what someone else has already earned. The point of documenting sources in academic papers is not just to avoid unpleasant visits to the Dean's office, but to demonstrate that you know what is going on in your field of study. It's also a courtesy to your readers because it helps them consult the material you've found. So mentioning what others have said doesn't lessen the credit you get for your own thinkingin fact, it adds to your credibility(Margaret Proctor-how not to plagiarize).

Plagiarism is the lazy students dream, and the hard workers nightmare. I am confident that plagiarism occurs more often than it should because we do not feel confident in our own work, we are constantly being reminded in our society that we must do our best and receive the highest achievements. Plagiarism also occurs because of poor teaching and learning skills, if you do not have complete confidence and knowledge on a particular topic than your only other option is to find the work elsewhere.

I some times ponder the question why not plagiarize? Would people still learn the fundamentals of education as well as those who refused to plagiarize? After all your still learning the information, and If the work is published the student knows the work is legitimate writing with correct information. Why not allow plagiarism? I know that the U.S. reacts to other countries technologically by using their ideas to make our products better, which is a type of plagiarism. So we should in good faith allow students to do the same, use someone elses ideas and make them better.

Students most important high school lesson should be plagiarism. They must know what it is, why it is wrong, and how to avoid plagiarism. The main reason plagiarism is used so often is because students dont even realize their plagiarizing in the first place. This essay will be written to inform high school students about plagiarism, my experiences with plagiarism and how to avoid plagiarism. The only research tool that I felt would cover all areas of plagiarism was the internet and that is where I conducted my search. First I typed in the word Plagiarism on the toolbar and let the Yahoo server find me all the matches. Thousands of pages popped up, and I began searching for the most influential and informative sites. A majority of the cites were college web sites explaining how to avoid plagiarism and why it is so crucial to avoid it. Many of the sites were also directed towards teachers, showing them how to inform their students about plagiarism and steer them clear of that type of paper. I even found a song about plagiarism, and a plagiarism court where you can decide whether a paper is legit. One site I used for my research actually explained the different types of plagiarism; the first type is Complete Plagiarism, This is the most obvious case: a student submits, as his or her own work, an essay that has been written by someone else. Usually the original source is a published journal article or book chapter. The use of unpublished work, including the work of another student, is just as serious. In such cases, plagiarism cannot be "avoided" by paraphrasing the original or acknowledging its use in footnotes. The work is the property of another author and should not be used(Dr. Colin H Gordon). Basically blatantly trying to pass off someone elses work as your own. The next type is called Near-complete Plagiarism, a student may lift portions of another text and use them in his or her own work, for example, a student might add her or his own conclusions or introduction to an essay, or a student might scatter his or her own comments through a text taken substantially from another source. These practices are unacceptable. Even with some attribution, the bulk of the work has been done by another(Dr. Colin H Gordon).

Even though some the work is sprung from your own thoughts and ideas it is still a rip- off paper. The third type of plagiarism is called Patchwork Plagiarism, In many cases, a student will lift ideas, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs from a variety of sources and "stitch" them together into an essay. These situations often seem difficult to assess. Most essays, after all, are attempts to bring together a range of sources and arguments. But the line between plagiarism and original work is not difficult to draw(Dr. Colin H Gordon). If the writing does not sound like it was written by you, then it probably wasnt, and most teachers can pinpoint that type of plagiarism. The next type of plagiarism is the most popular among students, its called Lazy Plagiarism, Lazy plagiarism crops up in many student essays, and is usually the result of sloppy note-taking or research shortcuts.

Inadvertent use of anothers language, usually when the student fails to distinguish between direct quotes and general observations when taking notes. In such cases, the presence of a footnote does not excuse the use of anothers language without quotation marks. Using footnotes or material quoted in other sources as if they were the results of your research. Sloppy or inadequate footnoting which leaves out sources or page references(Dr. Colin H Gordon). This type is the most overlooked type of plagiarism.

The last type is called Self Plagiarism, The use of an essay written for one course to satisfy the requirements of another course is plagiarism. Students should not use, adapt, or update an essay written for another purpose. This is not intended to discourage students from pursuing specific interests. If you want to use a previously completed essay as a starting point for new research, you should receive the instructors approval and provide her or him with a copy of the original essay. If you want to use substantially similar essays to satisfy the requirements of two related courses, you should get approval from all the instructors concerned(Dr. Colin H Gordon). This type was the most surprising for me because I had self plagiarized an assignments in the past, and did not fully understand why it was wrong until I researched this paper. Now that we know the five types of plagiarism we must learn how to avoid them.

My first year at Moorpark I was in a difficult western civilization class. We had a ten page assignment on the Mayan people, I had no knowledge on the subject so I used the web to find out all I could about the Mayans and began cutting and pasting sentences throughout my paper, little did I know I was plagiarizing. I completed my paper and was very satisfied by the out come and my crafty research skills. I had to save the paper to disk and register on a web site called Little did I know this page was dedicated to matching words and sentences with familiar sites on the internet. When the papers were returned I received an F for my work and I had to set up a meeting with my instructor to talk about my paper. In our meeting I realized how serious she was when she asked me if I deliberately copied all of my information off the internet. She explained how this was grounds for failing the class and how disappointed she was in me, I felt awful. Luckily she gave me another chance to re-do my paper and I was able to get credit for the assignment. That was a tough lesson that every student should learn before they enter college, because the results could have been much more severe. Hopefully this paper will shed new light for high school students and will help in preventing plagiarism from occurring as often.

Unfortunately plagiarism is at an all time high in high schools today. This has a direct connection with ethics in our school system, and in society. One internet site I discovered on the web had some very interesting statistics about high school students and plagiarism. states that 58.3% of high school students let someone else copy their work in 1969, and 97.5% did so in 1989( This statistic is very alarming to think about but apparently this generation feels there is nothing wrong with letting someone else take credit for their work. If this statistic continues to hold true in the future I would say we are in for a lot of trouble in the near future., one of the most popular web sites for combating plagiarism on the web has some very helpful guidelines to avoid plagiarism. First, you should always ask your instructor if you have any questions about plagiarism( If you dont have all the answers your teachers are always there to help you, dont go any further in your essay if you feel you are crossing the line into plagiarism territory. Second, always plan before you begin writing a paper, if you know you are going to use other sources of information, you need to plan how you are going to include them in your paper( Try writing an outline or brain storming before you begin writing, this will be your building blocks to a successful paper. Third, One of the best ways to prepare for a research paper is by taking thorough notes from all of your sources, so that you have as much of the information organized before you begin writing(

If your paper is not organized you are more likely to get lazy and forget to cite your sources. Forth, When in doubt, cite your sources. Of course you want to get credit for your own ideas. And you don't want your instructor to think that you got all of your information from somewhere else. But if it is unclear whether an idea in your paper really came from you, or whether you got it from somewhere else and just changed it a little, you should NOT include it in your paper.
