Indigestion Tablets Investigation

Aim:

My aim of this investigation is to find out the composition of
tablets which are for indigestion and compare their prices. I will
find out the indigestion tablet which reacts and dissolves quickly
with Hydrochloric Acid and produces more bubbles.

Introduction:

Indigestion, also known as upset stomach or dyspepsia, is discomfort
or a burning feeling in the upper abdomen, often accompanied by
nausea, abdominal bloating, belching, and sometimes vomiting.
Indigestion might be caused by a disease in the digestive tract, but
for many people, it results from eating too much, eating too quickly,
eating high-fat foods, or eating during stressful situations. Smoking,
drinking too much alcohol, using medications that irritate the stomach
lining, being tired, and having ongoing stress can also cause
indigestion or make it worse.

Some people have persistent indigestion that is not related to any of
these factors. This type of indigestion--called functional or nonulcer
dyspepsia--may be caused by a problem in the muscular squeezing action
of the stomach (motility). To diagnose indigestion, the doctor might
perform tests for problems, like ulcers. In the process of diagnosis,
a person may have x rays of the stomach and small intestine or undergo
endoscopy, in which the doctor uses an instrument to look at the
inside of the stomach.

Avoiding the foods and situations that seem to cause indigestion in
some cases is the most successful way to treat it. Excess stomach acid
does not usually cause or result from indigestion, so antacids are not
an appropriate treatment, although some people report that they do
help. Smokers can help relieve their indigestion by quitting smoking,
or at least not smoking right before eating. Exercising with a full
stomach may cause indigestion, so scheduling exercise before a meal or
at least an hour afterward might help.

To treat indigestion caused by a functional problem in the digestive
tract, the doctor may prescribe medicine that affects stomach
motility.

Because indigestion can be a sign of or mimic a more serious disease,

The Factors Affecting the Rate of Reaction of Indigestions Tablets With Acid

- The Factors Affecting the Rate of Reaction of Indigestions Tablets With Acid Planning, To start the investigation I thought about what affected rates of reaction. I managed to come up with 4 ideas: 1 Surface area 2 Temperature 3 Concentration 4 Mixing of the substances (stirring) I decided to do 2 different preliminary experiment so I could chose the best variable to investigate and see what equipment was necessary to provide us with an accurate set of data. Our first Preliminary experiment was testing what affect heat had on the rate of reaction....   [tags: Papers]

An Investigation to see How the Concentration of Hydrochloric acid affects the Rate of Reaction with Calcium Carbonate

- An Investigation to see How the Concentration of Hydrochloric acid affects the Rate of Reaction with Calcium Carbonate I am going to investigate how concentration of hydrochloric acid affects the rate of reaction between hydrochloric acid and indigestion tablets which contain mainly calcium carbonate. From my background knowledge from class work and books, (see references) I have found out that if you increase the concentration of hydrochloric acid, the rate of reaction will increase and the time of the reaction will decrease....   [tags: GCSE Chemistry Coursework Investigation]

Neutralisation of Stomach Acid Investigation Essay

- Neutralisation of Stomach Acid Investigation Aim: To find which tablets are best for neutralising excess stomach acid. Introduction: Prediction: I predict that the indigestion tablet with the most carbonates will need the most acids for it to go neutral. The tablets with the least carbonates will need the least amount of acid for it to go neutral. So the best cure for neutralising a build up of stomach I would think would be the tablets with the least amount of carbonates because if you had a liittle amount of stomach acid and you took a tablet with lots of carbonates instead of making it neutral it would make yr stomach alkaline as with the least amount...   [tags: Papers]

Research on the medical advice of indigestion

IsoZymes: Indigestion occurs when the foods eaten, are not properly
digested. Using a digestive enzyme formula will help greatly, if that
formula is both potent and very broad spectrum. Using lesser quality
product, and / or a formula with only a few enzymes, will be limited
in its ability to cover all digestive needs. In that case, indigestion
could still occur. Iso means "the same". ISO Science is the science of
using natural "isomolecules" that your body recognizes as "similar" or
"equivalent" to your body's own and are instantly absorbed and
utilized. "IsoZymes" is a very complete spectrum of several digestive
enzymes, all working in synergy. Raw food has intact enzymes that
assist in the digestion of that food group. Cooking destroys enzymes.
Our bodies also have enzymes that assist in digesting food, however
enzyme function diminishes with age. Failure to completely digest
foods leads to incomplete assimilation of nutrients. The result is the
development of a number of chronic medical conditions, food allergies
included. "IsoZymes" are made from premium plant sources. Plant based
digestive enzymes work at any pH; meaning once it is in your stomach,
it starts working right away. Animal based digestive enzymes do not
begin to work until after your stomach pH drops very low; thus any
person with hypochlorhydria (a lack of hydrochloric acid in the
gastric juices), may never benefit from animal based digestive
enzymes. Enzymes taken with meals will be used up in the stomach while
they help digest that meal. Enzymes taken on an empty stomach will go
into the blood stream intact. Blood conditions such as stacking of red
blood cells (RBCs) like a stack of coins (RBC Rouleau), or red blood
cells clumping together (RBC Aggregation), or accumulations of Uric
Acid Crystals in the blood, can be greatly helped with a combination
of Plant Digestive Enzymes and Antioxidants, taken on an empty
stomach.

Avoiding indigestion:

Although more research is necessary to determine all the risk factors,
the following steps should help.

1. You should eat meals at regular times.

2. You should not rush meals.

3. Enjoy eating and drinking, but do so in moderation.

4. Avoid those foods you associate with symptoms.

5. Don’t take aspirin for headaches, colds and coughs - take
paracetamol instead.

6. Avoid taking anti-arthritis pain killers if at all possible: your
doctor will advise.

7. Try not to let stressful situations upset you.

Avoiding heart burn:

1. You should eat your evening meal well before going to bed so that
it has time to digest.

2. You should raise the head of the bed six to eight inches on blocks:
this will help keep the acid down in the stomach where it belongs.

3. Avoid being overweight; try to lose weight if you are.

4. Avoid excessive caffeine, fats and alcohol.

5. Avoid tight belts or clothing.

Hypothesis:

I predict that the more expensive the ingredients of a tablet or
medicine, the higher the price. The reason for my prediction is
because some ingredients are more costly than others. Also the dosage
or concentration of a tablet will make it more expensive. The reason
for this is because the more strong the ingredients making the tablet,
the faster the tablet will work and the more costly it will be. I also
predict that the shelf life of a tablet will affect the cost. This is
because the earlier the expiry date of a tablet the less the cost will
be; and the late the expiry date the costly the tablet will be. Also
the demand and the season the of tablet will affect the price. The
final thing is the number of tablets in a pack and also the size of
the pack.

I will compare the 5 indigestion tablets

I have done research on five different indigestion tablets. The
tablets are Setlers antacid, Andrews antacid, Bisodol indigestion
relief tablets, Rennie Peppermint and Tums Antacid. The tablets are
made of different ingredients but have the same active ingredient
which is calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate has extra oxygen which
makes you go to the toilet releasing salt which helps get rid of the
heart burn. The calcium carbonate is in different amounts in all
tablets and thus affecting the price of the tablet. First I will
compare Setlers antacid with Andrews antacid.

Setlers antacid has calcium carbonate ph Eur 500mg. 3 rolls with 30
tablets of Setlers antacid costs £1.69 and the recommended dosage is 1
tablet per day. This price is higher compared with Andrews antacid
which contains 400 mg ph Eur calcium carbonate and 4 rolls with 40
tablets costs £1.30 and the recommended dosage is 1-2 tablets per day.
The Setlers antacid cost more because its active ingredient calcium
carbonate is 100mg higher than Andrews antacid and thus making the
tablet very strong and work faster even when taken less. 4 rolls with
40 tablets of Andrews antacid costs less than 3 rolls with 30 tablets
of Setlers antacid. The reason for this is because Setlers antacid is
much stronger than Andrews antacid. For the Andrews antacid, a person
has to take many tablets for them to work together. Andrews antacid
has side effects which may affect its demand and thus affect its
price.

Secondly I will compare Bisodol indigestion relief tablets with Rennie
pepper mint. These two tablets have calcium carbonate as their active
ingredient. Bisodol indigestion relief tablet has 522mg calcium
carbonate and Rennie pepper mint has 680mg calcium carbonate. There is
a small difference of amount of the active ingredient of both tablets.
This is the main fact that make the prices to be different because the
more the active ingredient the stronger the tablet and the faster the
reaction will take place. This also affects the dosage of the tablet
differing to the age of the person taking it. 24 tablets of Rennie
pepper mint costs £2.75 and the recommended dosage is 2 tablets a day
for adults and 1 tablet for small children. 30 tablets of Bisodol
indigestion relief tablets costs £1.95 and the recommended dosage is 3
tablets a day for adults and 1 tablet for small children. The price
set for Rennie pepper mint is more than the one set for Bisodol
indigestion relief tablets. 24 tablets of Rennie pepper mint cost more
than 30 tablets of Bisodol indigestion relief tablets. This is because
the active ingredient in Rennie pepper mint is more and thus makes the
tablet work faster and thus costing more. Rennie pepper mint is a very
strong tablet and thus the dosage recommended is less.

Experiment:

I will do an experiment to see the working rate of the 5 tablets. The
acid in the stomach is called Hydrochloric acid. I will test the
tablets with hydrochloric acid and with water. This test will help me
see how quick each tablet reacts with the acid and the water in the
stomach.

Equipments:

1. Eight beakers

2. Hydrochloric acid (Hcl)

3. Setlers antacid

4. Andrews antacid

5. Bisodol indigestion relief tablets

6. Rennie pepper mint

7. Clock - for timing the minutes each tablet took to dissolve.

8. Water

Method:

I will take 8 beakers and put hydrochloric acid in 4 of them and water
in the other 4. Then take a pack of Setlers antacid, Andrews antacid,
Rennie pepper mint, Bisodol indigestion relief tablets and take out
one tablet from each pack and drop it at one beaker each. I will time
the minutes that each tablet will take to dissolve and observe the
reaction taking place. I will note down which type of tablet produced
many bubbles while reacting and how many minutes each tablet took to
dissolve. I will then take another two tablets from each pack and
drop them into the two separate beakers with water. I will observe the
reaction taking place and note it down. I will also time the reaction
for each tablet.

Results:

The results in the table below are for the amount of time each tablet
took to dissolve. I will draw a bar graph to present the results.

Name of tablet

Reaction with water

Reaction with hydrochloric acid

Setlers antacid

It reacts with in 3 minutes

It reacts with in 1 minute

Andrews antacid

It reacts with in 5 minutes

It reacts with in 3 minutes

Bisodol indigestion relief tablets

It reacts with in 7 minutes

It reacts with in 4 minutes

Rennie pepper mint

It reacts with in 5 minutes

It reacts with in 2 minutes

Setlers antacid produced more bubbles than Andrews antacid and reacted
faster and took less time to dissolve in both water and hydrochloric
acid. Rennie pepper mint also reacted faster in both water and
hydrochloric acid than Bisodol indigestion relief tablets. This shows
how faster the tablets works in the stomach. Some of the tablets are
swallowed using water. This is done to help the tablet reach the
stomach and also for the water to dilute the acid in the stomach and
thus making the tablet to work faster. Other tablets are sucked or
chewed. When they are chewed, they mix with the saliva and make a
concentrated solution which is then swallowed. When this gets to the
stomach, it reacts quickly with the acid and gives a relief.

Conclusion:

My experiment was successful and also the research I have done have
supported it. As I predicted the more expensive the ingredients of a
tablet the higher the price. The research has proved this because
Setlers antacid and Rennie pepper mint costs more due to their
composition and their working rate. Also my experiment has proved this
because the two tablets dissolved faster and produced more bubbles
than the others in both water and hydrochloric acid.

Evaluation:

Although my experiment was successful, I feel there are several ways
in which it could be improved. I used a random amount of hydrochloric
acid and water and I did not measure them. If I were to do this
experiment again I will measure the amount of hydrochloric acid I’m
using and the amount of water I’m using and use a ph scale to test it.
I would also use a litmus paper to test the power of hydrogen (PH) of
the solution formed. Although I have achieved some results, I feel
that they are too few. If I was to do this experiment again, I would
compare many tablets and achieve more results.
