Work Experience

As part of my work experience, I have been given a place to work at
Boots located in Wealdstone. It is about a 5 minute drive to the place
however a bus does travel from near my house to Boots. I have been
given a Boots tie and have been told to wear black trousers and a
white shirt.

My first thoughts about work experience are both positive and
negative. I will meet several new people and will have the opportunity
to communicate with the public. I hope to achieve numerous objectives
by the end of this experience including confidence within my inner
self. With several new faces about, their first impressions of me are
going to be essential. In order to make their first impressions of me
a success, I will do a friendly handshake to the manager.

Although I will not recognise anyone, after a few days, I hope to make
friends if not colleagues, with whom I can interact with during breaks
and even during the day if anything happens. Remembering names will be
a challenge depending on the number of employees. With such an
exciting feeling, I am all excited working in an environment totally
opposite to school.

After the first few days of curiosity and nervousness, I hope things
go to plan and it turns out to be great. Before entering the
workplace, taking a few deep breathes will not only calm the body but
also focus the mind.

I need to ensure I 'fit in' with everyone so I gain the same respect
as everyone else in the workplace.

My first impressions were optimistic although a few things didn't go
as planned. I travelled by car to make sure I got there on time, and
thankfully, I did. A man opened the door, asking who I was and then
took me right to the other end of the shop, where the counter was.
There, I met the manager whose hand I shook. She took me to the stock
room where the majority of the staff were and introduced me to them.

- Work Experience When we were first told about work experience I thought to my self 'great no school for two weeks.' I was looking forward to looking around places and trying to figure out what and where I wanted to do my work experience. I've always been good at doing things with beauty and nails and therefore I was hoping to find somewhere I could experience more about that. - Work Experience I didn't choose what my work placement was to be. I turned up at Miss Franklin's office nervously hoping that I would get a good placement. She sat me down and looked through some documents. She pulled a wad out and told me that she had found a convenient work placement. She showed me the letters, and the title was BUPA Hospital, Marketing Department, Bushey. The first thought that sprang into my head was, how tedious. Then I took some time to think about the ups and downs of it....   [tags: Papers]

Essay on Work Experience

- Work Experience Work experience was an opportunity for me, and many other year 10 students across the country to experience a different world, a world outside school, a world of work. To many this was a new opportunity, a challenge if you like, but to me it wasn't all that new as I have worked for my dad at his work far from few times before. I found that working for my dad was challenging, sometimes difficult, but I always managed to get the work done and get that feel of self achievement....   [tags: Papers]

Work Experience Essay

- Work Experience Work experience. The first time those words were mentioned I felt a cold shiver slowly descend down my back. Images of spending a week with unknown people in dead-end jobs flooded into my head. It was obviously going to be far too much effort for what it was worth. Yet, another side of me said do I want to be watching paint dry, or even watching grass grow.’ This is not where I want to be. I want to be out, I want to be experiencing, living, running, jumping, eating, playing, screaming, laughing, anything....   [tags: Papers]

Work Experience Essay

- Work Experience I absolutely had no idea what I wanted to do for work experience. I had about three different options, but I always had a negative thoughts. One was to work in a bank of any sort. Well, the good things were that I think it would be fun and it does make you look smart and important. The negatives where that, to be totally honest, I was really good at money. I wasn't that smart in maths and was also a bit careless. I thought that working in a bank would make me have big responsibilities (like handling money or talking to customers) too big that I couldn't even handle....   [tags: Papers]

Essay on Work Experience

- Work Experience It was the first morning of my work experience and as I sat on the bench outside Thorntons and the nerves started to kick in. As the shutters started to rise, a burst of mixed emotions entered me. I was scared, excited, worried and a host of other feeling wriggled around inside me. I walked in the shop stiff with nerves. As I introduced myself to the assistant manager I kept missing out words as I was speaking because I was so flustered with the experience of it all....   [tags: Papers]

Work Experience Essay

- Work Experience When I received confirmation of my placement at Horndean Parish council I only had a week left to make my preparations like interviews, uniforms and insurance. My placement was late in coming because I had to keep on reselecting, eventually I found a half decent job which fitted my criteria very well, it was outside. It involved working with animals, computer work and was near to my home. I was quite chuffed with this because if I hadn't been given it I would be doing something very boring like working with the caretaker at school and not only would I have been bored but my street cred would have gone down the drain as well....   [tags: Papers]

The man who opened the door brought his hand towards me, just as I was
about to shake his hand, he handed me a tie, in which I quickly
grabbed to change my action. I was showed where the tea room was,
where I would be during my breaks and finally got started. As they did
not cover my insurance, I was forbidden to use the till so stacking
shelves was the main job. I was given about 20 minutes to go round the
shop-floor and familiarise myself with the items and where they
belonged. The stock room seemed humungous, especially when I was told
to take certain items and stack them in the shop. I had my break at
half past ten for about 20 minutes. I was the only one there, but took
a seat and watched the clock tick. I was told to bring items to the
front when I had nothing to do and go fed up after a while, and slowly
but slowly, lunchtime arrived. I met up with others from my school and
we ate at McDonalds just down the road. I had an hour for lunch so I
returned at half past 1 read to work again. I began to make friends
with the security guard which was good news. The day finished at half
past four for me although the rest of the staff finished an hour
later. I got the bus home, and overall, not a bad day!

The person most enjoyed talking and working with was the security
guard. His name was Albert, and 90% of the time he stood near the exit
door. During breaks and lunch, I chatted to him and we got on really
well. He didn't work as a Boots employee but was told by a company to
be a security guard at Boots. He wore a blue shirt, black trousers,
and a cap although wore a jumper when he went out on his breaks.

There's always a person you either hate or dislike, and in this case,
her name was Naina. She wasn't even my supervisor and yet she pushed
me around place to place. Just as I finished stacking shelves in the
morning (usually the deliveries which arrived on Mondays, Wednesdays
and Fridays), I was immediately called and told to do something else.
I was told to do the baby section first, but I kept trying to escape
looking for an excuse not stacking the items, especially in that
section. Overall, I guess it was worthwhile working with her, as she
made sure I never got bored or had nothing to do. She taught me how to
use a few machineries including the PDT.

The use of language played a large role in the workplace. On breaks
and lunches, staff used a few slang words while chatting away to
colleagues, however on duty, formal language was used. When someone
from the public asked a question, the staff would reply in friendly in
an appropriate manner, usually with a smile on their face. I didn't
really see much backbiting especially about other staff, either
because their break and lunch times were different to mine, or because
these employees were honest and polite.

I guess, overall, I achieved a few of my objectives I set before I
started. I feel much more confident when speaking to people who I have
never met before and this is a positive sign. Life as an adult isn't
as easy as you think, and moneys out of the question!
