My Burning Ambition - Edited Essay I had always craved to go to France, and I was on a mission to make it happen. However, this was no ordinary journey. I was determined to swim to France through the English Channel. Ever since I was a child, I had a great ambition to swim long distances. I became proficient in various swimming techniques. I set off for France fully equipped, dressed in a dark blue wetsuit, carrying a heavy oxygen tank on my back, and with a snorkel covering my face. As I began to climb over the stones and pebbles that lay between the sea and me, my feet felt cold and weary. Finally, I made it. Now that I was approaching the sea, I was centimeters away from my destiny. As I looked out into the distance, all I could see were layers of water; I had no idea what lay ahead of me. I was now knee-deep in water, which brushed me to and fro. The smell was wonderful, and with just one scent of fresh air, it was much better than the polluted air I usually breathe. I began to make my way through the sea. The sea looked incredible; it shimmered with light with the help of the sun. I took long strokes through the water, even though my arms were aching. On several occasions, I was joined by numerous birds that insisted on flying over my head. I began to get worried and hoped that they wouldn't poop on my head. After a couple of hours into my experience, the sun disappeared. My body trembled with fear because I distinctly remembered the weather forecast predicting a sunny and cloudless day. The sky filled up with grey clouds, and the atmosphere became dark and misty. I feared for my life as it appeared to be a thunderstorm. Suddenly, the waves grew fierce and tossed me to one side, causing me to fall unconscious. I began to dream that I was on a flying carpet and that I had a genie in a lamp. The genie granted me three wishes. My first wish was to be very tall and skinny because I'm short and a bit chubby. However, the genie granted my wish, but it went terribly wrong. I grew and grew and grew until I was very tall, and my head reached way up into the sky. Then I woke up, my body had been floating in the water while I was
than I had hoped. I decided to venture, as I called it; on a long and hopefully
A feeling of exultation overtook her, as if some power of significant import had been given her to control the working of her body and her soul. She grew daring and reckless, overestimating her strength. She wanted to swim far out, where no woman had swum before.
The ocean is mysterious to mankind. The unfathomable vastness of the ocean intrigues humanity into exploring it. In life, the immense possibilities that lie in the future compel us to reach for the stars. In the poem “The Story” by Karen Connelly, an individual willingly swims into deep waters even though they are fearful of what may exist in the waters. The swimmer later finds out that their fears were foolish, which illustrates the human tendency to venture into the unknown. The theme conveyed in this poem is that life is like a rough, uncertain, uncontrollable ocean that we must find get through with experience.
In “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop, the narrator attempts to understand the relationship between humans and nature and finds herself concluding that they are intertwined due to humans’ underlying need to take away from nature, whether through the act of poetic imagination or through the exploitation and contamination of nature. Bishop’s view of nature changes from one where it is an unknown, mysterious, and fearful presence that is antagonistic, to one that characterizes nature as being resilient when faced against harm and often victimized by people. Mary Oliver’s poem also titled “The Fish” offers a response to Bishop’s idea that people are harming nature, by providing another reason as to why people are harming nature, which is due to how people are unable to view nature as something that exists and goes beyond the purpose of serving human needs and offers a different interpretation of the relationship between man and nature. Oliver believes that nature serves as subsidence for humans, both physically and spiritually. Unlike Bishop who finds peace through understanding her role in nature’s plight and acceptance at the merging between the natural and human worlds, Oliver finds that through the literal act of consuming nature can she obtain a form of empowerment that allows her to become one with nature.
There are many things that I hope to accomplish and do when I get older. I want to improve and accomplish different things for myself in my career that I choose, in my material goals, and spiritually. I'm looking at the year of 2009, I will be out of college and be on my feet, hopefully. I have high expectations for myself and hope to accomplish as many of my dreams and goals as I can throughout my life.
“I had been born into a raging ocean where I swam relentlessly, flailing my arms in hope of rescue, of reaching a shoreline I never sighted. Never solid ground beneath me, never a resting place. I had lived with only the desperate hope to stay afloat; that and nothing more. But when at last I wrote my first words in the page, I felt an island rising beneath my feet like the back of a whale”.
Regarding to my pompous ambition, I have to admit that physical condition was really something I was short of. The lifeguard team requires candidates to swim four-hundred meters under seven minutes, but I needed ten. Sitting in the classroom and solving math problems equips me with a sharp brain, but not a physical body. However, I decided to give a try, so I wrote down “swimming training” on the top of every page in my diary.
I could feel the boat underneath, being pulled down into the watery nightmare, as the boat begins to fill with water, just like a bathtub, covering my lower body. There was a hole at the right hand side of the boat, about 3 inches in diameter, increasing in size as the waves continue to tease, and my boat continues to creak. I pulled my hand out and touched the deadly water, waiting for it to pull me in, since there was absolutely no use for the boat anymore. The world rushes by in a blur, I held my breath, shut my eyes, and fell back. My blood felt frozen in my veins, and my skin was rough, filled with goosebumps. “Cold water is the most efficient thief of heat.” I thought. Every cell in my body was screaming for oxygen, as my legs struggled, attempting to reach the speckled surface. I was drowning. It wasn’t loud, splashy, and dramatic, like the movies, my movements were more subtle and quiet, but I knew I was getting closer to death. I let the salty substance take over my body, until I felt a sleek, rubbery texture take me up to the surface, and I was suddenly filled with hope
Air! Air! Air! My lungs yelled as I was underwater but I pushed back that thought as I stayed a little longer down the bottom of my pool I needed to stay underwater a little longer if I were to break my record I could feel my heart beat pounding in my chest and the air that was held from the start I jumped into the pool wanting to explode out of my lungs just a bit more longer Ellis I repeated over and over in my mind just. a. little. bit. lo--
up a rocky path. Immediately I feel like I am in nature. I am reminded of all
Many issues and problems emerge in organizations that require action by leadership in order to maximize productivity. Because numerous decisions are made on any given day in an attempt for a school or organization to operate as smoothly as possible, constant effort and energy is required to monitor an organization’s culture. A problematic situation in my current organization that is rooted in employee motivation and attitudes is the lack of satisfaction communicated by group members. A year ago, the organization participated in a culture assessment that was conducted by the Kentucky School Boards Association (KSBA). This audit was ordered by our executive director because of the displeasure and dissatisfaction employees were communicating and displaying while at work. The
Out of everything that we 've learned this quarter, goal setting was something that stood out to me. There are a few times where I set a goal in my head but end up never achieving them, wether it was something very simple or more of a long term goal. A technique that stood out to me in our notes is, writing down your goals. I don 't I 've ever written down a single goal that I 've had. In class and in our notes we talked about how it is important to write down your goals and how you cannot just write the general idea of your goal, but how you need to be very specific in what it is you want to achieve. I think that in college it 's very important to set long, mid, and short term goals because somedays will be harder than others and you need
Passion for Family, Community, Business, Technology and Intellectual growth are what motivate me on the daily basis. These are vital parts that have contributed to framing me into the person I’ve become. They have also shaped my short-term and long-term goals in life. It’s critical for one to have a vision for their life and what they anticipate to accomplish. Without a vision or desire there is no hope for one to continue and to purse anything. My experiences with in my passions have helped me aligned my vision for my life. They have given me the valuable knowledge that have set me up for success to get to this point in life.
What is my personal purpose? Is a question that I have never thought to ask myself until recently. Then when I started learning more about a personal purpose I started wondering if I have one and what it was. I never thought of myself has having a real purpose until a watched an interview Will Smith had did and he had said “When your life means something to someone other than yourself than you have a purpose.” That is when I realized that I have a purpose. My purpose is that I am the hug that let others know it is going to be ok. My personal goals is to be genuinely happy with myself and life and to make my parents proud, my career goal is to own my own business and being successful at doing so, finally, my educational goal is to get my bachelors degree and grauate with honors and even moving on to getting my masters. Having goals is important to me because I know that while I am in the process of accomplishing them I will have something great to look forward to in the end.
The smoke was choking me. I could see a faint outline of a face across the deck. It was Tom, my lifelong friend and companion. He was completely surrounded by the bright flames."Tom are you OK!!""Yeah, but the fire has me surrounded!""Tom jump overboard, hurry!""But....but....""Do it quick, hurry!"I hit the surprisingly cold water with a crash.
