Graffiti
When you hear about graffiti you usually just think of vandalism or gangs but that
is not what it is all about anymore. It now is becoming more of a modern art form, a
illegal art form. Next time your driving into a bigger city or watching a train go by,
maybe look for some of this art, you might be surprised with what some of these people
can do with a spray paint can. In this paper I want take a look into the history of graffiti,
the way it is done, and who does it.
Graffiti began as a form of communication on cave walls of early man.(Historyof
Graffiti). It used pictures and a form of letters to tell a story. The Egyptians used it a way
with hieroglyphics. But what graffiti artists do today is traced back to the Roman Empire,
where graffiti was applied as the writing on the wall. Modern graffiti started during the
late 50's and early 60's, and was used by political activists and street gangs to mark
territory. But in the late 60's it took a whole new identity. It is now the underground art
movement, artist like TAKI 183 where making big noise in NYC. He was gaining fame
by just writing his nickname on cities walls and on the subway trains. In 1971 New York
Times published an article on him. He was wasn't the only one gaining fame through
graffiti, many people from all over the world where starting to do it. In New York the
subway systems proved to be a line of communication and unifying element for all these
separate movements (@149st). People from all five broughs became aware of each
others efforts. This established interbrough competition. At this point it was a battle to
have the most tags as possible. This created the style of bombing. Bombing then led to
pieces and wild style.
Graffiti is done in many different ways. It has developed to script and calligraphic
styles. Writers, which is graffiti artist, enhanced their tags with flourishes, stars and other
designs. Some designs where strictly for design while others had meaning. For instance,
crowns were used by writers who proclaimed themselves king (@149st). Writers can also
use different size nozzles for thin detail lines or fat size for bigger tags. Which now they
could fill in the letters with color and paint more of a bubble letter style, and inside the
letter they can add even more detail like polka dots or crosshatches. Soon arrows, curls,
connections and twist of letters would be added.
Graffiti or street art is considered an art form because it includes aesthetic criteria, incoherence and nonstandard presentation. Graffiti has been developing since the late 1960’s. The origins of graffiti go back to the beginnings of human social interaction. Graffiti has been found in uncovered, ancient Egyptian monuments and graffiti was preserved on walls in Pompeii. Also, graffiti art is colorful and complex. Graffiti artists need a considerable amount of skills to complete their artwork, they need to have creativity for using spray paint. The concerns of modern graffiti art originated in New York and it was known first as New York Style Graffiti. The novel Let the Great World Spin written by Colum McCann discusses graffiti art in New
The identity of a graffiti artist is hardly ever known unless they want to tag their art with their name or a nickname. Graffiti writers as a subculture are trying to express their political views through civil disobedience by painting pictures that speak out against the government. This subculture developed because they were tired of being oppressed by the government. Graffiti is one of the most enduring acts of protest. It is an important tool for the resistance movement as a way to publicize their protest. It is a visible and powerful form of protest that is going to promote change in the social justice by allowing oppressed groups of people express their viewpoints without being penalized by the
We all know what Graffiti art is; well we think we know because of the “modern” graffiti art that is still occasionally seen. However Graffiti Art has been tracked back all the way to the time of 1851. Firstly graffiti comes from the Italian word “graffiato” meaning scratched and was later called graffiti through the media as we see it today. ‘Additionally early forms of graffiti were seen back in ancient Italy at the ruins of Pompeii’ in 1851. “Painting on sidewalks, and other forms of graffiti, is still common in Rome today. Whereas Romans consider graffiti as a form of urban art, many westerners consider it vandalism unless property owners give consent to the graffiti artists.” (Cyprus, Sheri, and O. Wallace. "What Are the Origins of Graffiti?" WiseGeek. Conjecture, 02 May 2014. Web. 08 May 2014.) Even though all this might seem surprising to some and maybe even considered arguable to not be graffiti; I want to go in depth on graffiti art in America.
The history of the underground art movement known by many names, most commonly graffiti begins in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the mid to late 60's, and started with bombing. The writers who are credited with the first effort are CORNBREAD and COOL EARL. They wrote their names all over the city gaining attention from the community and the local press. Then the movement made way to New York City where the teenagers would write graffiti on the subways. It is unclear whether this concept made way to New York City on purpose or if it was an accident.
Even though graffiti, in general, has had a rough past, it has started a movement where it's a form of expression through the artist. Graffiti can be a wonderful work of art when it has a space where it doesn't disturb public or private property. The artist creating graffiti often wants to send a message. In many cases, the street art made on public property is to invoke a reaction or conversation to intrigue the viewer. A key element in graffiti and street art is to create a space where the artist can do his/her work and even receive compensation from art
Graffiti is an art form that was bred from the rebellion of youths. The first sighting of graffiti was seen on subways, and other impoverished areas around New York. This form involved what is called tagging , where the artist signs his or her name, nickname, or group name, on the side of a building or other surface. It is well known for its bold, colorful presence and intricate script. It is still prominent and visible in those areas of the Bronx today.
Graffiti has been around for a long time, far back to the prehistoric times, where cavemen would spend hours drawing on walls, reflecting their daily lives. However, these walls were not walls of their own homes; they drew on walls that might have been someone else’s home, yet no one sees their “works of art” as vandalism. Archaeologists have even used graffiti on the walls of many areas to better understand different ancient cultures. Graffiti is a type of art that is popularly used among many young and middle-aged males, although it is considered vandalism, it is still an important piece of popular culture because of it’s ability to act as an effective form of communication and expression of identity, which can be used to reveal problems in society.
Graffiti has been around for centuries. It can be seen on buildings, cars, and anything that can be painted with a spray can. Since graffiti came to exist, there has been much debate on whether it is an art form or an illegal activity. While it has been banned and deemed illegal all over the world, it still persists in today’s society. Along with the controversy that comes with graffiti, many commonly known stereotypes are apparent within the act of graffiti. Stereotypically, graffiti is seen as an urban act done by younger people. Typically, since this act is considered illegal, it is mostly done in the middle of the night, and the people partaking are usually wearing dark or black clothes. The picture, “LATA 65 IS A CREATIVE
Graffiti can be traced back to the beginning of time with the cavemen. Many caves have drawings done by cavemen. The cavemen used what they had available, whether it was a rock, a stick, or a bone to crave or draw on the inside of the caves to communicate. The drawings were a way to communicate or to express themselves. When discoveries of the drawings were made, no Archaeologist, I believe, thought these drawings were a form of vandalism. Now let’s, fast forward to modern day today, graffiti artist uses spray cans to display communicate versus the traditional artist who uses a paint brush. But, does this make a graffiti artist less of an artist just because he/she uses a spray can and a building to express inner thoughts? I think not.
No matter what people say about it, Graffiti is a form of self-expression. It is important to realize the amount of talent and work required to create a piece of graffiti. The scale of such a piece can be small found on a corner to massive one taking up an entire wall. However, there are varying
Graffiti is a beautiful art that expresses feeling and emotions. However, people think of it differently. Is it a crime or an art? Those talented people, young or old, a teenage, a child or an adult, have a passion for making graffiti art on street walls a...
Looking from the taggers' point of view, one can understand why taggers and graffiti artists draw and do graffiti, but this does not justify the fact that often times this form of self-expression is not acceptable when it is done on other peoples property. Having the opportunity to listen (film, class, talk show) to why taggers and graf...
During the Roman Empire and ancient Greek, graffiti was well known as an inscription but graffiti was discovered long before the Roman Empire and ancient Greek. Graffiti was discovered 30,000 BCE in caves paintings using tools such as animal bones and pigments. These illustrations were often placed in ceremonial and sacred locations inside of the caves. Today graffiti is a form of art conveying political social messages in artistic form.
‘“Graffiti (sgraffiti), meaning drawings or scribblings on a flat surface and deriving from the Italian sgraffio (‘scratch’), with a nod to the Greek graphein (‘to write’), originally referred to those marks found on ancient Roman architecture”’(Weisburg). Though, it is unknown when or where graffiti first made an appearance; modern graffiti did not come around till the late 1960’s to early 1970’s in New York. The term “tagging” is the modern form of scratching (Weisburg). It also is considered the origin of all modern graffiti, including street art.
