Mary Rowlandson
Mary Rowlandson wrote a narrative about hardships she faced during her captivity, in a journal. Despite her suffering she thanked God for her life and his mercy. Rowlandson wrote during the colonial period and is an example of a puritan writer for many reasons.
As a typical Puritan writer would, Rowlandson chose to write about God, religious beliefs, and her hardships. After the death of her child Rowlandson thanked God for, "preserving me". This statement clearly reveals her faith in fate and God's will. In the narrative she also describes her daily life as a capture. Rowlandson writes that she was "calling for my pay," after she made a shirt for one of the Indians. After that, she was called again to perform the same task and was paid a knife.
Like the puritans Rowlandson uses a pain style of writing. The language she uses is uncomplicated and easy to understand. She dose not use references to other books except the bible. In one instance she compares the Indians to Jehu, the Israelite king who slew Ahab and all his men, "like Jehu, they marched on furiously". She also compares her experiences to the bible. Rowlandson makes it clear that the Indians did not comfort her after "It" died. Trying to explain the way she felt at that moment, she writes, "as he said". "He" is a Biblical allusion to Job. Like Rowlandson, "he" also lost his children.
Mary Rowlandson expressed Puritan beliefs in her writing. She wrote, "still the lord upheld me," with her "sick child" in her lap. Puritans believed they must endure the hardships they faced in the New World and be faithful to their church in order to be forgiven for their sins. She also comments, on tobacco being, "bait the devil lays," to make men loose their time. Puritans believe that idleness is the devil's workshop.
In the narrative of her captivity, Rowlandson uses Puritan themes. The Puritans often choose themes that include thoughts about man as a sinner, God as omnipotent, life being simple and fate. She does not try to change her situation by rebelling or speaking for herself. Instead she gives in to fate, "and so it must be," and the will of god. She also gives God credit for giving her "power over it,"(tobacco) when she decided to quite smoking.
She uses exact details and wordings in a very matter-of-fact tone, giving off the impression that she is not surprised by the brutality of these “infidels”(27) and that she was raised to expect this kind of behavior from them. Rowlandson recounts this practice of “knocking” people on the heads often, particularly when describing how others were taken into captivity. This causes the reader to question why her force into captivity included reasoning: “They answered, if I was willing to go along with them, they would not hurt me” (28). This act uncovers that the natives did not want to harm when unnecessary, hinting that the “savages” could in fact listen to reason. During a plundering, one of the natives was able to take a Bible which they then gifted to Rowlandson. When the natives show acts of kindness, Mary Rowlandson accredits these favors to God : “I cannot but take notice of the wonderful mercy of God to me in those afflictions, in sending me a Bible” (33). This shows that Rowlandson sees the natives as subhuman, unable to process that they could be kind at this point in her journey. We learn more about the natives further into the autobiography. When overcome with emotion, Rowlandson began to weep for the first time in front of her captors. They responded by reassuring her that she would not be harmed: “No, said he, none will hurt you” and then consoled her by feeding her (40). The natives acted
On February 10, 1675, Mary Rowland was captured in Lancaster, Massachusetts. While being held captive, she narrated her experiences and tried to affirm her Puritan beliefs throughout her survival of being in captivity. She’d rather go with the “ravenous Beasts” than die because she wanted to “declare” of what was happening to her throughout her journey (70). Mary Rowlandson believed God was omniscient, forgiving, and omnipotent and it shaped her perception of the world in an affirmative way throughout all the chaos and suffering.
Mary Musgrove was a very influential woman of her time. Her heritage of both Native American and English blood gave her the perfect advantage for prosperity in the time period in which she lived. She had a great impact on the state of Georgia as an interpreter, a trading post owner, and a tribe member.
According to "Puritan Family Life: The Diary of Samuel Sewall," in the 16th century there was a religious group, the Puritans, that believed only in Christian faith and in God’s intervention in everyday life. Furthermore, their core values and beliefs were in original sin, predestination, and grace. Puritans also viewed nature as evil and the woods as the Devil’s playground. Contrastingly, Native Americans were very much in-tune with nature and lived in the woods. This dissimilarity is a conflicting factor between these two cultures that both Rowlandson and Smith experience.

...like the Puritans. Her plentiful use of scripture not only reinforces the Puritan belief in the mind of the reader, but also in Rowlandson’s own mind. If she can connect each feeling she had that was not correct in traditional Puritan thinking to a verse in the bible, she can be at peace with what she felt. She could believe that she wasn’t wrong in her feelings of gratitude and perhaps even respect for the Indian culture.
Mary Rowlandson was a pretentious, bold and pious character. Her narrative did not make me feel sorry for her at all, which is strange since she really did go through a lot. During the war, the Narragansett Indians attacked Lancaster Massachusetts, and burned and pillaged the whole village. During the siege Mary and her six year old child were shot, she watched her sister and most of her village either burn or get shot. She was kept as a captive, along with her three children and taken with the Narragansett’s on their long retreat. The exposition of the story is set immediately. In the late 1600’s, literature is dissimilar from today’s, such as focusing on being sent into the fiery pits of hell only because one hasn’t converted to Puritanism. There are also different types of writing to display the righteousness and positives of being a converted and loyal to the Puritan culture. Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards are two popular Puritan authors who project different messages and portray a varying energy through a slim number of their pieces. The poems, “To My Dear and Loving Husband” or “Upon the Burning of Our House” by Anne Bradstreet or “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards are fit examples of the Puritan age and what Puritans belive to be religiously

William Bradford and Mary Rowlandson are very well known for their Puritan faith. They both have different journeys involving their faith and beliefs. However, Mary Rowlandson and William Bradford have the same religion and beliefs there are differences to compare and contrast. The Puritans religious ideas and their beliefs were influenced by the enlargement of the New England colonies, economically, politically, and socially.
In the Puritan communities, religion was not just a belief, but a way of life. Puritans were god fearing. They spent a great deal of time reading the bible and going to church. Puritans believed they were the “chosen ones” and that God was responsible for all favorable activity. Mary Rowlandson was a Puritan. Puritans are very strict and believe in almost the same values that major monotheistic religions believe in; such as, the devil, they give God credit for everything, and look to God for answers and help. This pretty much speaks for every single voice Rowlandson brings forward in her memoir. Constantly and with much admiration she quotes the Bible and this shows the intensity of the situation she was dealing with and her steady trust in God. “The next day was the Sabbath, I then….His presence forever” (remove #2), as one might assume, Rowlandson very faithfully makes herself the culprit despite losing most of her family. The innocence and the thoughtfulness that comes out of this particular statement says every single thing about her, the fact that she is serious about her being, and the depth of her religious self. Mary Rowlandson was an Indian captive, and also an American writer. She was born in England approximately 1637-1638. She immigrated to Lancaster, Massachusetts with her parents. Joseph Rowlandson became a minister in 1654 and two years later he married Mary. They together had four children, one whom died as an infant, but the others were Joseph, Mary, and Sarah.
In “A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson,” Mary Rowlandson, a Puritan mother from Lancaster, Massachusetts, recounts the invasion of her town by Indians in 1676 during “King Philip’s War,” when the Indians attempted to regain their tribal lands. She describes the period of time where she is held under captivity by the Indians, and the dire circumstances under which she lives. During these terrible weeks, Mary Rowlandson deals with the death of her youngest child, the absence of her Christian family and friends, the terrible conditions that she must survive, and her struggle to maintain her faith in God. She also learns how to cope with the Indians amongst whom she lives, which causes her attitude towards them to undergo several changes. At first, she is utterly appalled by their lifestyle and actions, but as time passes she grows dependent upon them, and by the end of her captivity, she almost admires their ability to survive the harshest times with a very minimal amount of possessions and resources. Despite her growing awe of the Indian lifestyle, her attitude towards them always maintains a view that they are the “enemy.”
