Infrared Radiation

When you go outside on a sunny day, you can feel the heat from the sun
on your skin. The heat that you feel has traveled 150 million
kilometers from the sun through space by infrared radiation. Radiation
with frequencies below the red end of the spectrum is infrared.
Infrared is different to convection and conduction because it does not
require particles to transfer heat. There are no particles in between
the space between earth and the sun, but still the infrared radiation
can travel through it.

Every object on earth gives of infrared radiation, even cold objects.
Infrared cameras can be used to detect this. One of the amazing uses
of infrared detectors is tracking rockets. The camera would be linked
to an infrared detector, this can not only tell the direction from
which the radiation comes from, but also how the direction changes.
This information is then given to a computer which then processes it
and hence gives a production controlling the camera and the detector
so the rockets course is followed.

There are many types of detectors, one of them being the tracking
rocket detector, but there is also a detector which has military
applications. Living organisms and engines are at temperatures above
their surroundings, and they emit more infrared. Appropriate detectors
are able to uncover the presence of people or engines, even if they
are totally camouflaged, because of the infrared radiation, hence the
whereabouts of an enemy may be discovered.

A detector that is quite similar may also be used together with an
infrared source to enable one to see in the dark. The infrared
radiation gets reflected from different objects just like light, but
not in the same amount. Hence a device that can receive this radiation
and use it to produce a similar picture with light makes the scene
visible. This detector, has obvious uses, military wise, but can also
be used to observe animals at night, without causing a disturbance. An
example of using infrared for good is in the 1972 Olympic Games.

Essay on Implementing Light As A Contemporary Tool For Measurement

- Implementing Light as a Contemporary Tool for Measurement Light. The word that reigns ambiguity and purity in its highest form. According to the dictionary, light is a noun, an adjective, or a verb (Webster). In the physical-spectrum definition, light is electromagnetic energy that may or may not be discernable to humans. Figure 2 shows this range of electromagnetic energy in page two. It shows that humans can see wavelengths that are 400 – 700 nanometers (nm) in wavelength as colors while all others are simply blind to humans....   [tags: Light, Electromagnetic radiation, Infrared]

Essay on Types Of Vision And Colour Of Eyes

- For this task I thought long and hard about the types of vision and colour of eyes I wanted, the colours I would want is a little complex, I would have a completely blood red Iris while the border of the pupil having a touch of yellow starry rings, to give the looks of a soul that have been ravaged and in pain for centuries. I choose this for no particular reason other than personal preference. Night Vision I initially turned to night vision, initially this sounds nice, but after some thought on the basic principles of how night vision works, I decided against it for several reason....   [tags: Electromagnetic radiation, Light, Eye, Infrared]

The Use Of Infrared Centrality As It Strikes A Surface Essay

- The heat flows from hot to cold is an unavoidable truth of life. People have put a lot of effort into stopping this natural behavior, however all they have been able to do id slow down the process. Nuclear Radiation and Fallout Effects Essay

- The Fallout If a nuclear fallout were to occur, the earth would turn into a radiated wasteland. The earth would be essentially non-liveable, but it could be possible to survive. People, with the help of fallout shelters and bunkers, would be able to survive the initial attack and quite possibly live in the shelters until the radiation has dropped to a level in which they can survive. Now, the difference between a nuclear explosion and a convention explosion is that a nuclear explosion can be thousands, or even millions of times more powerful than the largest conventional detonations....   [tags: nuclear fallout, nuclear explosion, radiation]

The Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation Essay

- Even though the equal balance of matter and antimatter created in the beginning of the universe as proposed by the Big Bang theory might have annihilated each other before any stars could form, the inflation model of the Big Bang accounts for the unequal level of matter-antimatter existing today and how stars could form before matter-antimatter reactions destroyed the universe. Essay on Use of Infrared in Surveillance

- Use of Infrared in Surveillance       Abstract:  This paper begins with an introduction into the discovery and description of infrared radiation by Sir William Herschel in 1800. It follows by describing various uses of infrared for surveillance purposes. The first application described is the role of infrared in active and passive Night Vision Devices (NVD's) for both military and recreational use. It describes the basic functions of these devices and the differences between the uses and benefits of both active and passive scopes....   [tags: Technology Essays]

Images like this come from geostationary satellites all the time. This
infrared image shows the same image we see but with a part of the
spectrum that our eyes do not detect. The infrared pictures allow
weather men to measure the temperature of the cloud tops, which can be
used to determine their height. The whiter clouds are colder than the
greyer clouds in this image. Infrared images can be recorded 24 hours
a day. Visible pictures can only be made during daylight hours.
Coast-lines and lines of latitude and longitude have been added to the
images and they have been altered to northern polar stereographic
projection.
