The Factors that Affect the Temperature Change Between Copper Sulphate and Iron Filings

Aim

The aim of this piece of coursework is toinvestigate the factors that
affect the temperature change between Copper Sulphate and Iron
filings.

Affecting factors

Ø The concentration of Copper Sulphate Solution (CuSO4)

Ø The amount of Iron filings (Fe) used

I have chosen to experiment using the 1st factor I will have to change
the concentration of the Copper Sulphate Solution (CuSO4)

Prediction

I predict that the higher the concentration of CuSO4 the higher the
concentration the higher the temperature rise. I therefore predict the
higher the concentration the higher the temperature change.

Background knowledge

I know that when I add the iron filings to the solution the iron will
displace the Copper here is a diagram to show the reaction.

Ø The same volume of copper sulphate solution

Ø Concentration of the Copper Sulphate (CuSO4)

Safety

Ø Wash hands if you get all copper sulphate solution on them

Ø Wear Safety glasses just in case you get either copper sulphate
solution or iron filing in your eyes

Ø Put stools out of the dangerous positions

Ø Boiling tube

Ø Clamp and stand

Ø Small beaker

Ø Measuring cylinder

Ø Scales

Ø Paper

Ø Copper Sulphate Solution

Ø Water

Method

Ø Use a measuring cylinder to measure 10cm3 of Copper Sulphate

Ø Put it into the boiling tube

Ø Use a thermometer to take the initial temperature

Ø Weigh 2g of iron filings onto a piece of paper

Ø Quickly put them into the boiling tube and instantly begin to stir
until the reaction has finished

Ø When the reaction finishes the temperature will be at a peek record
this temperature

Preliminary experiment conclusion

By looking at my preliminary results I can see that the higher the
concentration of copper sulphate solution the higher the temperature
change after the reaction has finished.

Conclusion

By looking at the results I can see that the higher the concentration
of copper sulphate solution the higher the temperature change after
the reaction has finished. We can also see this by looking at the
graph. Therefore my prediction was correct.

Evaluation

I feel as if my results were reasonably accurate. I can see this by
looking at my graph. The line travels from the bottom left to the top
right apart from one result which was an anonymous result. This made
the average temperature drop by quite a large amount. The fact that
the line shoes a positive correlation which would help support my
prediction. This stated the higher the concentration of copper
sulphate solution the higher the temperature change. I could make my
experiment more accurate by using a funnel to make sure all the iron
filings came into contact with the solution. I could have also made
sure that I didn't stir the solution too fast in case I caused the
temperature to rise. I could also repeat the whole experiment again.
To extend the investigation I could of investigated any other factors
which affected the temperature change such as the mass iron filings
used with the Copper Sulphate solution.
