In the article, "The Foundations of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences", by Thomas Armstrong, he explains the creation of multiple intelligence theory. The first intelligence test (or IQ) was established by Alfred Binet, a French psychologist, in relevance for failing students to succeed in college. After eighty years had passed another psychologist, Howard Gardner, begin to debate the thoughts and perceptions of Alfred Binet and redefine the intelligence test into seven specific areas of life. Linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, and intrapersonal were the seven main views of the IQ test that test the level of understanding for each person. In addition to this, all of these seven areas were not meant for everybody to excel in or to understand. Intelligences were sometimes used together to complete one task such as washing clothes. First you have to a visual amount of clothes that can fit into the washer and use a certain amount of muscle to lift the clothes and also measure out the exact amount of liquid needed to clean all of the clothes. In one way or another, everybody has the seven intelligences but may have their on levels on how to use them.
School can be related to the reading by showing that everyone has their own methods of thinking and different intelligences. Students in a high school level, show their ability to learn when it comes to English. The school I went to had a basic, general, and advanced English class that was determined by their ability to read and write in a certain format. The intelligence used mostly in this area would be the linguistic intelligence.
When I first began to read the article "The Foundations of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences", I questioned if this is going to be a determinant in if a person gets a job or not later in life. IQ or intelligence test measures ones ability to adapt to certain age groups of life and may be difficult from person to person. Within the IQ, there are seven intelligences that people can relate to or have a better understanding of the intelligence then others.
14. Multiple Intelligences - Multiple intelligences are Howard Gardner's theory that people are possessed of eight semi-independent kinds of intelligence, only three of which are measured by standard IQ tests.
Howard Gardner was born on July 11, 1943 in Scranton, Pennsylvania and is still alive to this date. He completed his post-secondary education at Harvard, earning his undergraduate degree in 1965 and his Ph. D. in 1971. Gardner is a developmental psychologist who was inspired by the works of Jean Piaget. He is best known for his theory of multiple intelligences. Gardner believed the concept of intelligence was to narrows and didn’t encompass all types of intelligences. He worked with normal and gifted children and brain-damaged adults. He then began to create a theory designed to synthesize his observations. In 1983, he published Frames of Mind, which outlined the theory he is best known for, the Theory of Multiple Intelligences.
This means that language partakes a very important role in the way I learn. I received a score of 4.14 out of 5. The test said that I “enjoy saying, hearing, and seeing words. You like telling stories. You are motivated by books, records, dramas, opportunities for writing” (Literacynet.org ). I know that this is very true. Ever since I was younger, reading and writing was very important to me, now I use my writing skills to help me study for tests by rewriting notes or even reading things aloud. If I were to teach a student who also scores higher in verbal/ linguistic skills, I would provide the material verbally or give them something to read over. After, I would ask questions aloud and receive and provide feedback on their answers. If I were to implement a student centered unit using the verbal/linguistic intelligence, I would provide journals, graphs, or more reading
Howard Gardner’s theory contains eight main multiple intelligence. As the years have progressed there have taken one out and is left with the main seven. These seven are: Linguistic, Mathematical, Spatial, bodily, Musical, Interpersonal, and Intrapersonal. These are found in everyone; however, each person will excel in one or two. Once teachers can determine what intelligence the students will exceed on and teach to their strengths the student will learn much more.
Similar to Sternberg, Binet came to the conclusion that intelligence is the sum of mental processes (Flangan, Harrison, 2005). He developed the first intelligence test in order to categorize how much children benefitted from school education. The Binet-Simon scale, keeping in mind that Binet believed in intelligence consisting of different components, thus included language component, auditory processing, learning and memory, as well as judgement and problem solving (Kamin, 1974). The results were supposed to identify the student’s mental age. Lewis Terman introduced the Binet-Simon test to America and adapted it to sort army recruits in World War I (Comer et al., 2013). The Stanford-Binet test, developed by Terman in 1916, aimed to be an improved version that was able to measure mental age more appropriately (Kamin, 1974). In order to understand how similar the two theories are we must first understand their differences. These two men differed in opinion on how IQ and intelligence should be measured, and they differed in opinion on what made a person "smart". According to Merriam Webster Intelligence is "the ability to learn or understand things or to deal with new or difficult situations." Howard Gardener discovered the theory multiple intelligence they are musical, kinetic, linguistic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, spatial, logical, and existential intelligence. Unlike the normal school setting, Gardner’s theory helps with student’s learning abilities by focusing on their strengths. Gardner believes that understanding these multiple intelligent theories will help students strengthen their knowledge.

Interpersonal intelligences are nearly the complete opposite because it is said that “Interpersonal intelligences reflects an ability to recognize and understand other people’s moods, desires, motivations, and intentions” (www.edutopia.org). The third intelligence that I correspond with is logical-mathematical intelligence and Gardner says that “Logical-mathematical intelligences describes the ability to develop equations and proofs, make calculations, and solve abstract problems” (www.edutopia.org). My self-reflection will use the multiple intelligences paradigm to analyze my strengths and weaknesses within my top multiple intelligences which are intrapersonal, interpersonal, and logical-mathematical. Understanding these intelligence’s will help us to design our classroom and curriculum in a way that will appeal to all of our students. We might also be able to curve discipline problems by reaching a student in a different way. One that will make more sense to them and more enjoyable. We can include all of the intelligences in lessons to accommodate all of the students’ different learning styles at once. By reaching each students intelligence we can assume that a student will perform better which, could mean students retaining more important information. A students learning style can also help lead them into a more appropriate career direction. As a teacher you can also learn your own personal learning style or intelligence to help improve the way you learn and teach.
