There are very few countries that have changed as rapidly as Vietnam, in just a short amount of time. Now, only thirty years after the end of the American War, this country is full of hope. It is changing, and doing it quickly. Access to Vietnam is easier than ever, roads are becoming more modern, there are many hotels and Vietnam’s old Communist system is changing into a socialist economy. Tourists to this country and finding that it is not reminisce of a war, but a beautiful country.
Vietnam is located in Southeastern Asia, bordering the Gulf of Thailand, Gulf of Tonkin, and South China Sea, alongside China, Laos, and Cambodia. It is slightly more South than New Mexico. The climate is tropical in south; monsoonal in north with hot, rainy season (mid-May to mid-September) and warm, dry season (mid-October to mid-March). There is one major natural hazard of the country, which is, occasional typhoons (May to January) with extensive flooding.

Vietnam has a very rich and culturally diverse background dating all the way back to 1066 when William the Conqueror invaded and paved the way for English colonization. The French had been colonizing since the 19th century. The French role in Vietnam's history is critical; they started out by bringing these simple peasants to the latest technology of farming and hunting (Yancey 37). The French helped these people out greatly in the beginning, but like all stories of occupation go, they just got worse. They started forcing rules and laws on the people of Vietnam.
Hieu thao: The Powerful Word in Vietnamese Culture In Vietnamese culture, hieu thao, translated as filial piety in English, is the root of all virtue. According to Dr. Hashimoto's definition in The Cambridge Handbook of Age and Ageing, filial piety in the traditional family systems in Asia is generally understood as the "fulfillment of family obligations" that children must do towards their parents (Historical Roots). Actually, this theory has been spiritual rope binding children and their parents since they were born, and even continues after their parents pass away.

Through the French and Chinese, the Vietnamese culture has been influenced by two major religions, Catholicism and Buddhism. According to Joseph Buttinger in Vietnam: A Political History, Vietnam was first ruled by the Chinese in the year 111 B.C in which they ruled Vietnam for a thousand years (25). After the Chinese, the Portuguese, English and the Dutch also came to Vietnam but the French started its great influence on Vietnam in 1615 with the Catholic missionaries (SarDesai 31). This study analyzed the effects of Catholicism on the Buddhist-Vietnamese culture by investigating the origins and conflicts between the two religions. Others see us as independent and unsophisticated. We see ourselves as fun-loving, carefree, happy, proud people who have a great love for our culture. The Acadians were French settlers of eastern Canada who were exiled from their land in the 1750?s. The Acadians are known to have settled in the southern bayou lands of Louisiana around that time. The Acadiana people acquired their nickname, ?Cajuns,? from those people who could not pronounce Acadians correctly. Due to the opinion that Cajuns were ?different?, they lived close together and became isolated from others in Louisiana. They have since developed their own distinct characteristics which make them unique and unlike no others in the bayou state. Family, music, housing, food, marriages, and ?traiteurs? were all a part of the simple but challenging lifestyle of the Cajuns.
The Vietnam War was the longest and most expensive war in American History. The toll we paid wasn't just financial, it cost the people involved greatly, physically and mentally. This war caused great distress and sadness, as well as national confusion. Everyone had that one burning question being why? Why were we even there? The other question being why did America withdrawal from Vietnam. The purpose of this paper is to answer these two burning questions, and perhaps add some clarity to the confusion American was experiencing.
The Hmong Culture of South Asia is a very interesting ethnic group. Between 300,000 to 600,000 Hmong live in Southeast Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. About 8 million more live in the southern provinces of China. Since the Vietnam War ended in 1975, Hmong refugees from Southeast Asia have settled in Australia, France, Canada, and the United States. The largest Hmong refugee community lives in the United States with a population of about 110,000. The U.S. Department of state has tried to spread Hmong refugees out across the country to reduce the impact on any one region. Because Hmong families tend to be large in numbers, the community grows rapidly.

The French are all about preserving their culture and being individualized. They often take great pride in the French products and the French style, and believe in keeping the French culture “pure” so they also limit the amount of foreign goods that are being imported. But during the World Wars the French began to allow foreigners to immigrate into France to take jobs due to an increase in job shortages. The immigration from the World Wars added to the diversity of the French culture. Ever since the 1850’s there has been a steady flow of immigration into France, and now nine percent of the French population is made up of immigrants (Gofen 62). The break down of the cultures in France is eighty-five percent of the French population is Roman Catholic, eight percent Muslim, two percent Protestants, and one percent Jewish. From 1801-1905, Roman Catholicism was the man religion in France and bishops and priests were being paid by the government to be state officials. But this was broken in 1905 (“France” 460). The current debate in France is the banning of religious symbols in public school systems. An example of a religious symbol being banned is headscarves. Headscarves have been banned since 2004, but the French do not allow ANY religious symbols in public school systems (“In Knots”) France should not continue to ban the wearing of religious symbols in public school systems because since the World Wars France began to allow foreigners to immigrate into France, in the United States there are no laws restricting the wearing of religious symbols, and important French figures have had foreign parents.
