During the first and second generations of video game consoles, many electronic companies jumped on the console bandwagon. After all, they built products with the same parts. A year after the PlayStation’s release, Nintendo tried to take down the newcomer turned-gaming industry giant by releasing their own 3D gaming console, the Nintendo 64, but Nintendo stuck with the cartridge format, which inevitably led to its downfall. For that very reason, developers were drawn to the PlayStation ("History of the Sony PlayStation"). Before the release of the first PlayStation, Sony was never into the video game market. Sony had made a few attempts to make things for computers, but when the CD-ROM technology had come out, Sony could start to get some market share. The origins of the PlayStation is traced back to Nintendo because Nintendo tried to integrate disk-based software into its gaming hardware. Sony was the second company to introduce disk-based software into gaming, but even though it was the second, the PlayStation made disk-based software the most popular. The PlayStation was first released on December 3, 1994. Since the PlayStation was slim, sleek and had a revolutionary controller, Sony’s console was a huge success. Before companies were interested in disk-based gaming, game cartridges ruled over the game industry but Sony challenged that when they used discs in their new system. Game companies did not use disc software in their games at times because cartridges were cheaper but the new CD technology that Sony incorporated in the PlayStation had increased storage space which allowed it to have better video and audio quality than other consoles at the time. The PlayStation 2 is a sixth generation video gamin... ... middle of paper ... ...ne, Sony had made extreme improvements to its product to make it one of the best-selling consoles today. As of May 2014, the PlayStation 4 has already sold over 7 million consoles and over 20.5 million games for it (Molina). While evolving every few years and continuously adding new features in updates to the systems to the systems that could get them, The PlayStation has come a long way since its first release in 1994. If it wasn’t for the competition with other game system developers such as Microsoft, Sega, and Nintendo, Sony would not have made it this far in the gaming industry. The constant competition between the different companies is the main reason for companies to introduce new features in updates and in new systems. The latest model of the Sony PlayStation may be one of the best next-gen consoles out there, the PlayStation 4 still has a long way to go.
Many people agree that Sony’s Playstation 4 is better than Microsoft’s Xbox One and vice versa. I have been gaming since I was seven years old and still am today. The first gaming console I ever had was the original Xbox. Throughout the years though, technology has improved vastly. The last generation of game consoles gave the industry a much needed boost and gave the consumer another commodity. With the eighth generation of consoles just arriving, a lot of people are wondering which console to buy. There is, however, more than just the choice of games. There’s differences in processors, graphics cards, hard drives, design, operating systems, ports, versatility, stability, controllers, and, of course, the games.
The PS2 offers a reasonably powerful processor, about 297MHz (Megahertz). It may seem a little bit on the sluggish side compared to the processor of Xbox, about 733MHz, and to the GameCube processor, about 485MHz. If you ask me, I think that 733MHz is a little much for a gaming console, it’s just plain ridiculous. The PS2 has enough power to run high quality games. And with the planned decrease in cost for the PS2, you should be able to get one for lower than the normal price, $299, sometime in the near future. Microsoft cannot decrease their price for Xbox, $299, because they are already losing money selling systems, about $50 a system sold. So that tells you that the PS2 could match the price of GameCube, $199, before long.
There are few things on the minds of gamers more then the current console wars between the PS4 and the Xbox One. This time, the field is nearly level on the hardware front and the services offered are very close. The devices are very similar but there are some obvious differences. Microsoft and Sony have different end games in mind and their products reflect those philosophic differences. It is in the fine details that the differences will emerge.
Sony’s knows that it’s most powerful weapon is its word of mouth. Everyone knows the quality Sony produced for the PS1 and nobody hesitate to buy the PS2. And company was well aware of that. By the time Sony released the PS2 the company didn’t have any competition.
The video game industry is valued in $USD 9.5 billion in 2007. The main players in the industry Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are competing to grab the biggest market share. Each one of them has recently introduced new consoles aimed to set themselves apart f...
Nintendo's success in the home console arena can also be attributed to the rigidity of the gaming industry and culture within which its two main competitors, Sony and Microsoft, adhered themselves. Traditionally, the norm was for new home console systems to be marketed primarily based on improved audiovisual capabilities. Indeed, the original PlayStation was a huge win for Sony, and to the detriment of Nintendo, in large part because of its more lifelike 3D graphics. Note that Nintendo was no different with earlier iterations of its systems, though perhaps to a lesser extent than its competitors. However, with this specific generation, namely against the release of the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, both of which touted high definition capabilities, the Wii was unmistakably the sub performer in terms of graphics. Its competitors had no choice but to follow the dominant ideology, which...
Ever since there have been video games to play there have been huge debates over which video game console was actually the best console of them all. Each new generation of consoles are better than the last. The PlayStation4, commonly referred to as the “PS4”, is the best gaming console to date, and provides its users with the best online gaming experience than the Xbox One based on its hardware, online services, and its accessories.
Nintendo has been around for a long time. 125 years, to be exact. This report will explain how Nintendo got so deeply rooted in our culture by examining the moves they made with their consoles, including both successes and failures.
Video games, specifically home consoles, came to the US on October 18th 1985. The NES. Most games around that time were all bright and cheerful looking games such as Mario, Kirby, Legend Of Zelda, and Pokemon a few years later on the Gameboy. But as other game developers appeared, new types of games were made. The shooter genre and fighting genre of games came mostly on the Xbox and PS systems with a couple exceptions being on a Nintendo console(Doom, Goldeneye, Smash bros). Now shooter games

The game is started and, 5 minutes later, the game crashes. Frustrating, right? I experienced this process every day for a week before I went to Google for answers. I discovered that the game I spend sixty dollars, had some incompatibility with my console, the PS4, causing the game to crash. I had been so excited to play the game after buying it due to how long I had been waiting for it to be released for so long. This was the start of many disappointments I have with console gaming. Another downfall of the consoles is the lack of customization present. Unlike the PC, a PS4 cannot be built from the ground up and the biggest change that can be made to the hardware is the storage space. The consoles are pre-built and sold the way they are. But there is more to customization than the hardware of the system. Customization also involves the software, an area the console is sorely lacking. Software changes are only made through authorized releases through the company, such as an
Video games started as arcade machines with simple graphics and even simpler stories, soon evolving into home gaming with The Magnavox Odyssey, the world’s first home-gaming console. It invaded living rooms in 1972, selling 300,000 units. Since then there has been many consoles and games released, some have been huge commercial successes which
