How does the representation of LGBT characters in video games impact the way that society views Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and/or Transgender individuals?
From the humble origins of the video gaming industry, individuals have been influenced and their ideas of certain themes have been impacted. Nowadays, this industry is just a popular as any other media which exists in the mainstream world. Characters within video games reflect society’s changing views of the normalities of which individuals and/or groups must abide to. This is exemplified in the evolving representation of queer individuals within the virtual world. Furthermore, as the video game industry came into focus, so did the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights movement. This illustrates that society’s views of the LGBT community were reflected in the video games created at the time, however, it was rare that such characters existed as protagonists until the twenty first century as non-heterosexual characters were objectified and caricatured . Due to the extreme lack of asexual and non-binary characters within video games, it is difficult to explore such characters with enough depth, therefore my paper will be looking at the characters who are either lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender.
The popularity of video gaming is distinctively apparent, this is clearly evident through the viewing of the demographics of Australian households. According to a survey conducted by Bond University (2011), 92% of Australians live in a household with at least one device that can be used for playing video games, whether that be a PC, console, handheld device, phone and/or tablet. ...nt stated that they “don’t see enough games with gender neutral characters.” This exemplifies that majority of video game characters are either masculine or feminine dependant on the characters’ sex and that not enough gender neutral characters appear in video games. In addition to that, 100% of non-binary respondents to my questionnaire stated that they are not pleased with the way their gender is being represented in video games.
In conclusion, due to the underrepresentation of LGBT characters in video games, individuals are not able to relate to the character they are playing as or are simply not pleased in general with the way their gender is being expressed to the rest of society through the form of video games. Consequently, leading society’s views to be changed and can cause a negative impact on the lives of individuals and/or groups in the world around us.
