The mode of communication is at the forefront of essential human transactions in everyday life. Communicating is arguably the most essential form of social interaction as it is how deals are prepared and agreed upon, friendships are made and emotions are expressed. However, communication is not all in the words that come out of our mouths, as there are several different facets of communication which may be interconnected or used separately. For example, as stated by Herbert H. Clark in “Depicting as a method of communication” p.324 “iconic and facial gestures depict different ways of communication” this proves that our expressions and body movements also play a part in the message we as humans broadcast each day.
Communication can be broken up into two different variants of verbal and non-verbal communication however there are many sub sections of which make up the model of communication. Verbal communication is most vital in situations where there is a heavy load of information to be told. Phone conversations are strictly limited to verbal communication as there is little non-verbal communication accessible. Whether it is to do with the way in which we sit on our chair, or how we pronounce certain words, communication can be deceiving. Lance Armstrong is a prime example of how the different elements of communication may contradict themselves. As saying one thing out loud to another person may hold little to no meaning if our body language demonstrates something else. Body language is a very important factor in the communication process, the psychologists started studying this language at the late centuries because it forms a big part of understanding the verbal words; by this way we can explore another people’s real feelings ,meanings and thoughts, It’s also help us to understand ourselves. It is known as “kinesics” pronounced like ”kineesicks”. This kind of language dose not consist a words or alphabets, it is consists of hand movement, facial expression and eye movement.
Nonverbal theory is broad with many avenues to explore. Kinesics focuses it to be more specifically about body movement and gestures, and is often referred as body language. This paper is exploring how these nonverbal have changed from generation to generations and the implications that creates in the world today. Kinesics play a major role in how we perceive information and allows others to gather information about us. The studies discussed in this paper highlight that while kinesics is not always at the top of our mind, it is always influencing us and our decisions. The research ends with how what has been observed is being applied to the world today and personal examples of the author.

The presence of nonverbal messages in our communication is very important. Following the text, researchers have estimated it is up to “65 percent of social meaning we convey in face-to-face interactions is a result of nonverbal behavior” (131). The movie “Mrs. Doubtfire” is a typical example about the interactions among characters, also with audience. Several scenes in this movie show us the effects of nonverbal messages in communication, especially through the character Daniel, who disguises himself as a middle-aged British nanny in order to be near his children.
I understand that communication styles change greatly from person to person. Recently, I have found myself caught in the mix with someone who really lacks communication skills, and could greatly benefit from a course like this one. On the flip side, I am lucky enough to deal with someone who I have personally experience great communication from. Though, I do think that everyone has their own ideas of what “good” communication is.

Nonverbal communication surrounds us all the time. “Nonverbal communication is all aspects of communication other than words” (Wood, 2016, p. 135). It is not communication with words, but we use nonverbal communication when we talk. We use nonverbal communication without even realizing it in every facet of our lives. This type of communication can be challenging depending on someone’s culture. Something that means one thing in America, can mean something totally different in another country. It is important to know this so that you don’t offend someone from another culture (Wood, 2016, p. 149).
I learned a lot about Human Communication in this class when I read the chapter about Nonverbal Communication. Nonverbal Communication is the process of using messages that are not words to generate meaning. I learned that it happens every day. I also learned that is very hard to read or understand depending on the person you are speaking to or with. Verbal and Nonverbal codes work in conjunction with each other. The words we speak or say are used in conjunction six different ways: to repeat, to emphasize, to complement, to contradict, to substitute, and to regulate. There are different types of communication (verbal, nonverbal, paralinguistic). Verbal communication is communicating with words. For instance, an individual speaks to another at a business meeting regarding profit margins. Second, nonverbal communication is communicating without the use of words but through gesture, body language, facial expression and eye contact (Baron, Branscombe, Byrne). Also these physical expressions can provide powerful and valuable information about others’ current feelings and reactions without the need of words. Lastly paralinguistic is defined as the use of emotional expression, gestures, and the location of the body in relation to the other's body, eye contact, and level of voice instead of verbally expressing these cues (Triandis). Additionally, paralinguistic is also known as paralanguage as a way to modify or nuance meaning, or convey emotion, with the use of pitch, volume, and intonation (Triandis). Non-verbal communication doesn’t involve words, but is a powerful form of communication. The way your body language is tells the other party whether or not you are receiving their message or just listening. When your nonverbal behaviors align with the words you’re saying, they indicate to the person you are communicating with that you are trustworthy. It is indeed a complex process filled with countless elements, all of which play an important role. The process of communication between human beings has been studied and analyzed outwardly since the beginning of time. The term itself cannot be defined in only one particular way because communication exists in a certain context and is dependable on the communicator and the audience. Example of describing communication is as “the transmission of information, ideas, attitudes or emotions from one person or group to another (or others) primarily through symbols” and “social interaction through messages” (McQuail, 1993). Furthermore, Watson and Hill describe the process of communication as “one which begins when a message is thought up by a sender, who then encodes the message before transmitting it through a particular channel to a receiver, who in turn decodes the message with a certain effect as an outcome” (Price, 1998).The complexity of the whole process is seen through the use of verbal and nonverbal communication on a daily basis, as well as the ability to interact with other human beings on multiple levels, mentally and emotionally. We begin communicating the moment we come out of the womb and do not stop communicating until death.
