Is Education Empowering or Just Expensive-
The Value of a College Education
The value of a college education is in doubt as one hears stories of college graduates who end up working at McDonalds, or Starbucks. Many students are rethinking the true value of going to school for another four years versus jumping into the workforce straight out of high school. However, though the amount of student debt has increased along with inflation and more students than ever are taking out student loans, the true value of a college graduation may be more than money can measure.

Is it any wonder that many college freshmen find themselves unequal to the task and drop out? A college education teaches critical thinking, language skills, quantitative reasoning and communication as part of its core curriculum. These are things that were sadly lacking in my public school education. Gatto quotes in his article Against School …“Woodrow Wilson, then president of Princeton University, said the following to the New York City School Teachers Association in 1909: "We want one class of persons to have a liberal education, and we want another class of persons, a very much larger class, of necessity, in every society, to forgo the privileges of a liberal education and fit themselves to perform specific difficult manual tasks." They learn how to regurgitate answers the state wants them to give, and any attempt to be an individual is now grounds for being suspected to be a member of the trench coat mafia. So the kids learn to submerge any personal expression. They learn that it 's better to go along so that you get along. They learn that to rock the boat could get them rocked right out of the school. Don 't question authority. Do as you 're told. Don 't think, just do as I say. Oh, and have a good and productive life as an active, well-adjusted participant in our thriving democracy!”
