Utilitarianism Utilitarianism is a moral theory written by John Mill. The major concept of the theory is the ultimate pleasure. Some philosophers have criticized mill theory on the ground that it is only fit for swine and it is objectionably self intercepted. In this paper I will explain how Mill view pleasure from a qualitative point of view. I will explain how it is better to be dissatisfied in some situation than to be satisfied. additionally, I will illustrate the external and internal sanctions. I will then discuss why pleasure is the ultimate desire. I will then argue Mill’s higher and lower pleasure to support the idea of seeking knowledge. First external sanction, this part focus in honor that would be gain from following the moral theory. People are reworded for their morality by considering them honored people. Nevertheless, immoral people are considered shameful by others. Therefore, the responsible for the external sanctions is usually society. Mill try to show that people liked to be respected by other and the society is capable of damaging someone’s image which is a motive for people to be moral. Second intern sanction, Mill indicate that the conscience can be cultivated by the action. Immoral act results the feeling of guilt on someone conscience. Guilt is a painful feeling which is the absence of happens, and based on the greatest happiness principle people are going to be moral than immoral. In other words, the delight of being moral motivate people to act morally. Additionally, “Undoubtedly, this sanction has no binding efficacy on those who do not posses the feeling it appeals to; but neither will these persons be more obedient to any other moral principle than to to the utilitarian one.” Mill indicate that a person whose conscience has no impact that person is most likely not to follow any other moral theory.
