On August 01st, 1966 on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, many families lost their loved ones to the actions of Charles Whitman, a lone gunman who was only 25 years old at the time; Whitman climbed the campus tower, and with three rifles, two pistols, and a sawed-off shotgun, he shot forty-three people, (thirteen of whom died,) in just under ninety-six minutes. This historic tragic event became known as the UT Tower Shooting. According to the Texas Monthly archives, Charles Whitman, an Architectural major, and Ex-Marine had battled personal demons of depression and severe headaches so much to the point that he started that very morning off by killing his mother and wife. During the shooting spree, people everywhere in the radius of the tower either hid somewhere hoping to block his shots, or they simply played dead to escape the bullets. Parents have enough to be stressed and concerned with their children attending schools where strangers can easily trespass and endanger our kid’s lives with guns. And to add insult to injury is the bill’s effective date; after being signed by the Governor, the bill will take effect on August 1, 2016 for all institutions of higher education except for community colleges. The effective date for these campuses is August 1, 2017. This effective date is exactly 50 years to the date of the UT Tower

The shootings that occurred at Kent State University, Ohio, on May 4, 1970 have been a dark spot in American history for almost 36 years. It is a day remembered by many names, THE KENT STATE SHOOTINGS, MAY 4 or the KENT STATE MASSACRE. Four students were killed and nine were wounded, all of America suffered.
April 20th, 1999, Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, experienced a mass shooting. Thirteen people were injured and more than twenty were injured. Twelve were students and one was a teacher. Seung Hui Cho, a student at Virginia Tech, armed himself with knives, chains, guns, and ammunition on April 16th, 2007. He went on a shooting rampage on campus and killed thirty-two people before turning the gun on himself. On the morning of the shooting, Seung Hui Cho woke up early. He armed himself with guns and several rounds of ammunition. He made his way to West Ambler Johnston Hall, where he killed students Emily Hilscher and Ryan Clark. After killing two students, Cho went back to his room and collected personal belongings and pictures. At 9:01am, he mailed a suicide note and pictures to NBC in New York. At 9:26 in the morning hours after the first shooting occurred, campus police alerted students and staff of the active shooter on campus. Cho then walked to Norris Hall and chained the doors shut at the entrance. With classes in session, Cho walked up to the rooms and killed thirty-two people before killing himself (“Students Killed in Virginia Tech Massacre”). School shootings seemed like a new phenomenon, but they occurred for the majority of American history. The first school shooting occurred On July 26, 1764, when a Lenape Indian shot and killed nine children and the school master of the Greencastle, Pennsylvania school (Galvin): as noted in Appendix A. Since 1764, the number of school shootings rose exponentially. In the 1990’s, eighty-six school shootings occurred and between 2000 and 2014, 110 shootings transpired since 2000 (Killam,2008). The development of semiautomatic weapons lead to an increase in deaths. A study conducted in 1990 found through the years of 1986 to 1990; 71 people died, 201 wounded, and 242 people held hostage by school shooters(Galvin). While the area a school serves as one factor in the number of violent acts committed per year, school shootings have not been connected to this. The schools in Chicago dealt with more violent acts, but Sandy Hook Elementary, a small city school had relatively few violent acts committed by students.
Most people believe that everything happens for a reason, but on April 20, 1999 people began to question their beliefs. The crime that occurred on that horrific day was said to be the worst high school shooting in U.S history. 13 people were killed, one of them being a teacher, and more than 20 were injured. It wasn’t long before two more people were added to list of the deceased when the killers turned their guns and committed suicide.
Each year, more than 200,000 children and youth under the age of 20 are killed and injured by firearms in the United States. Peers, family members and even policemen shoot thousands of young people. Countless young children and youth are survivors of gun violence and become scarred by the effects of such violence in their homes. Gun violence happens very often in America where young children and teens kill other people. It is very rare to find a shooting where the police kill their own people. On April 30 1970, President Richard M. Nixon, announced that the United States of America and South Vietnamese forces were organizing a violent attack against enemy targets in Cambodia. Almost instantly, anti-war protests erupted. One of these countless protests was at the Kent State University located in Kent, Ohio. After several days of protesting things got out of control, leading to the death of four college students and the injury of nine others. The outcomes of Kent state shooting, otherwise known as the May 4 Massacre, went beyond those who physically suffered. The accidents on campus reformed the way millions of Americans though about the war in Vietnam and the anti-war movement. Most students, across the universities and campuses of America, were heavily against the growth of war into Cambodia. It is almost certain that the death of the four students and wounding of nine others ignited revolution across the nation’s universities, colleges and high schools. However, this revolution was short-lived as school terms were brought to an end. The controversial roles of the United States of America in Vietnam filled students with resentment, which led to a tragedy at the Kent state university and eventually to a social change.
My firm belief is that Mr. Whitman will most likely fit into the psychotic mass killer typology. I was at first thinking of Ms. Whitman fitting the typology school shooters, but a school shooters motivation for the mass killings are hatred for school, hatred for other students or ethnic groups, Mr. Whitman didn't have that kind of motivation. Mr. Whitman´s motivation for the mass killing according to him was the thoughts he had in his head, and he couldn't stop himself from killing. This kind of motivation sounds more like a psychotic mass killer rather than a school shooter. I believe that Mr. Whitman´s motivation sounds to me more like he has some type of psychotic condition. School shootings have altered American history greatly over the past two decades. From 1997 to 2007, there have been more than 40 school shootings, resulting in over 70 deaths and many more injuries. School shoot-outs have been increasing in number dramatically in the past 20 years. There are no boundaries as to how old the child would be, or how many people they may kill or injure. At Mount Morris Township, Michigan, on February 29th, 2000, there was a 6 year old boy who shot and killed another 6 year old girl at the Buell Elementary School with a .32 caliber pistol. And although many shootings have occurred at High Schools or Middle Schools, having more guns on those campuses would not be a good environment for children to grow up in. However, on a college campus, the pupils attending are not children anymore; the age range is from 17 to mid 20’s. Therefore they understand the consequences associated to the use of weapons and have gained more maturity. In April 16th, 2007, at Blacksburg, Virginia, there was a shooting rampage enacted by Sung-Hui Cho (23 years, from Centreville, VA) who fired over 170 rounds, killing 32 victims, before taking his own life at the Virginia Tech campus. Colleges and Universities would be a much safer place, for student and teacher, if guns were permitted on campus for self-defense purposes.
1966, Charles Joseph Whitman climbed to the top of the iconic clock tower in the center of Texas University in Austin and killed sixteen and seriously injured thirty of his fellow Texas Longhorns. 1991, George Hennard, thirty-five, opened fire on forty innocent patrons at a Luby’s in Killeen, Texas, killing twenty-three of his intended targets. 1999, citizens in a small Colorado County of Douglas were distraught when the infamous Columbine High School massacre rocked their town. More recently, campuses like Virginia Tech, Purdue, and even an elementary school in Connecticut have had students and teachers brutally murdered at the hands of young adults (CNN).
On the morning of October 3, four people were shot within a span of approximately 2 hours in Aspen Hill, and other nearby areas in Montgomery County. Another was killed that evening in the District of Columbia, just over the border of Silver Spring. In each shooting, the victims were killed by a single bullet fired from some distance. The pattern was not detected until after the shootings occurred on October 3. Fear quickly spread throughout the community as news of the shootings circulated. In the wake of all the school shootings in the past fifteen years gun control has become a more serious issue than before. Gun control has always been a concern in the United States, but not until the first major school shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado did this topic become a reality to the American public. In 1999, this massacre left fifteen people dead including the assassins. And just recently on March 5, 2001 did the tradition continue, when Charles Andrew Williams killed two classmates, leaving many injured in Santee California.
