Standard 6 standard states, “The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making” (Council of Chief State School Officers, 2013, April, p. 10). This standard is a hard standard to feel like you can fully be successful on. When I first began teaching, it was something that I struggled with. My students have a hard time looking at their assessments and seeing growth. When they hear the word pre-test, they want to just “Christmas Tree” their answers. To fulfill the requirements for SEGC 6020: Integrated Instruction: Assessment and Learning, I completed assessments on decoding, reading comprehension and math on a target student with moderate intellectual disability. Once the assessments were complete, I then had to complete reports of my findings throughout the assessments. Although, they all are required to master the same standards, the way they go about showing mastery could be different based on their ability to learn. I have captured the different ways that my students are able to show and communicate their skills. The student that I completed the assessment on was able to give me her best work when she was able to verbally tell me the answer verses having her write it because she struggled with writing and just liked to talk in general. It allowed her to have complete and full attention directed solely on her, which is what she enjoyed. Since my students fall in the intellectually disabled category, there was a lot of knowledge that was gained when completing this assignment. I took all the required assessments that I was to give her and had to adapt the work/assessments in ways that would best benefit this student and show a true measure as to where she was when it came to reading and
