Culture, wrote Mc Omie, is “a way of seeing, a way of perceiving, and a way of behaving on the basis of that perception (1990, p.177)”. “People carry their culture wherever they go, and that culture influences how people behave and respond to other’s behavior. Despite the beauties and uniqueness of each, when two different cultures come together, there is a strong likelihood that some clashes may occur”. Hofstede (1986 p.30) observed, “When teacher and student come from different cultures…many perplexities can arise”.
Employing new academic strategies and adjusting to a new classroom style requires maximum attention. Many countries education systems value different academic and social skills than the United States’ higher education system, Street (p.6). She continues to say, “In some countries the most important thing is to master the text. American students just don’t work that way. The American students suss out the professor, get a sense of what the demands are for each course. They anticipate class discussion.” Due to this it takes time for the international students to adjust to the classroom method of discussion and engaging with the professor.
Due to the discussions in the U.S system, it may be difficult for international students to participate effectively as needed. Different cultures put more or less value on oral communication, and it is consequentially important not to assume that interpretation of a concept or experience is the same across cultures (Kearney, McCroskey & Richmond 1986). Research has supported the existence of communication distinctions between individualistic, low-context and collectivistic, high-context cultures.

Cultural differences pose several barriers for students and may impair their opportunity to learn. These barriers are created by differences in language expression, communication style, preferred learning style, gender-role customs and behaviors, and limited parental involvement due to these cultural or socioeconomic barriers (Ralabate, & Klotz, 2007).
The article talks about how teachers need to have cultural compatibility. While it might be difficult for some teacher to grasp and understand the different cultures behaviors and beliefs. For those teacher that can are more likely to provide a learning environment that is enriching and responsive to the children’s different cultures. Teacher should have “meaningful interactions with members of other cultures and promote cultural disequilibrium (Colombo, 2005, p. 2).” Activities that have this are more likely to increase cultural competence.

American students have been such a question mark for the international students, their way of living and thinking is way different than any international student and this is noticeable. Students from all over the world notice a difficulty in dealing with the Americans and mentally understand them. Therefore, Rebekah Nathan argues that in her article “As Other See Us” and discusses the differences between the American and the international students. Moreover, she uses different evidence based on students from different backgrounds and cultures. Nathan goes over opinions and stories that happens with the international students in the US and what they think about these situation, which they considers weird in the eyes of the international students.

The author spends significant time discussing the World Culture Model, which could be a very useful tool to a teacher that is developing a unit on culture or just incorporating aspects of culture into the classroom. The model that is presented can be particularly useful when comparing cultures because one of the hardest aspects of comparing different cultures is the fact that there are no common grounds to judge the different cultures. The model breaks down culture into easy to look at portions, which makes it easier for both student and teacher to study.

Culture is a powerful influence plays a big role in our interactions. Culture may also impact parenting style and a developing child. Having a strong sense of their own cultural history and the traditions associated with it helps children build a positive cultural identity for themselves. This also supports children’s sense of belonging and, by extension, their mental health and wellbeing. This class is crucial in understanding and working well parents, staff, and children. The way people communicate varies widely between, and even within, cultures. One aspect of communication style is language usage. Language has always been perceived as a link between people but it can also constitute a barrier. Across cultures, some words and phrases are used in different ways. For example, even in countries that share the English language, the meaning of "yes" varies from "maybe, I'll consider it" to "definitely so," with many shades in between . Furthermore, communication between cultures which do not share the same language is considerably more difficult . Each culture, has its distinct syntax, expressions and structure which causes confusion in intercultural communication. For example , in Asian countries the word “no” is rarely used, so that “yea” can mean “no” or “perhaps”. Therefore, an American traveling to Japan might be considered impolite if he ignores this rule. Furthermore, individuals who are not comfortable with a certain language may not be taken seriously. Such is the case in the classroom, where a student who has a perfect knowledge of the subject in question may have difficulty expressing his idea due to his inability to write properly and therefore he would not receive the grade he truly deserves.
