National security was the primary motivation articulated by the Bush administration for Operation Enduring Freedom (2001) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003). Despite a more opaque link between Al-Qaeda and Iraq, the terrorist organizations’ purported presence in both countries was used to garner national support for the wars. While the invasion of Afghanistan was justified with its almost singular objective of deposing the Taliban, who permitted Al-Qaeda to operate with impunity, the Bush administration provided ancillary reasons for U.S. intervention in Iraq (Jones 87). Saddam Hussein’s purported possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction and the U.S.’ supposed altruistic goals of liberating the oppressed people of Iraq helped the Bush administration sell the war to the American public (Marr 259). These groups made up the balk of the Iraqi insurgents and remained key players after Iraqi deteriorated into a civil war in 2006. In Afghanistan, Taliban and Al-Qaeda insurgents returned, from what was thought to be Pakistan, resulting in some of the most deadly fighting since the initial U.S. invasion, resulting in 700 NATO deaths in 2010 (Lecture 11/26). In some respects, the reemergence of the Taliban marks U.S. policy failures in its inability to adequately pressure Pakistan into perusing Taliban members operating within their borders.
