Although the original mission of the United States Secret Services was to control and prevent counterfeit money in the United States after the Civil War in 1865, by 1930 the role of the Secret Service had greatly expanded. Many events occurred during that period that led the Secret Service to expand to enforce the laws whether it includes protecting money, protecting the President, or investigating on the frauds and groups that are dangerous to the people of America. Driving forces and trends impacted Secret Service mission and support operations over the many years.
The Secret Service was officially created by President Abraham Lincoln on July 5, 1865. The Secret Service headquarters was created in Washington D.C. The headquarters later relocated to New York City but moved back. The Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCulloch chose William Wood, which was widely known for his heroism during the Civil War, as the first chief. His first year was very successful. Chief Wood closed more than 200 counterfeiting plants. Unfortunately, the same day President Lincoln established the Secret Service he was assassinated. As the country mourned about the news, Congress thought that it should add Presidential Protection to the list of duties that the Secret Services perform. However they did not follow this thought until two more dismaying events in history. During the year of 1867, the Secret Service broadened its responsibilities and included “ detecting persons perpetuating frauds against the government.” This meant that the Secret Service would investigate many cases unrelated to counterfeiting. The U.S. Border Patrol is the organization that polices the access of illegal immigrants into our country. The bureaucrat task of the United States Border patrol is to defend the boundaries of the United States by preventing illegal admission, and by detecting, interdicting, and detain illegal aliens, smugglers, and illegal imports. Today, the United States Border Patrol is accumulative of 21 sectors. A chief patrol agent controls each sector. There are 145 stations placed throughout the continental United States, and in Puerto Rico. The Border Patrol controls the border by land, sea, and air. The Border Patrol has jurisdiction across all of the United States borders and at least 25 miles off the border. One of the most important duties of a Border Patrol Agent is line watch. This involves the finding, prevention, and fear of terrorists, undocumented aliens, and smugglers of aliens next to or close to the land border by maintaining surveillance from a concealed position, following up leads, answer to electronic sensor television systems, aircraft sightings, along with understanding as well as following tracks, marks and other physical evidence. Some of the major activities are farm along with ranch checks, traffic checks, traffic observations, city patrols, transportation checks, organizational, intelligence, and anti-smuggling activities. After the fear of terrorism grew in the United States do to the Al Qaeda 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, the US Government found a need for a centralized department that umbrellas all other agencies when it comes to homeland security. The U.S. Government found this umbrella agency with the passage of the Homeland Security Act by Congress in November 2002, the Department of Homeland Security formally came into being as a stand-alone, Cabinet-level department to further coordinate and unify national homeland security efforts. (Homeland Security) With the creation of the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) the government had a pinpoint location for the collection and gathering of intelligence, control of policies that effect national security, and a no fail mission. The Department of Homeland Security started to engulf other agencies and created many more, a total of 22 agencies now fall under the DHS. The Border Patrol is a strategic group of specially trained people who prevent terrorists and terrorist’s weapons, including weapons of mass destruction, from entering the United States. The Border Patrol is specifically responsible for patrolling nearly 6,000 miles of Mexican and Canadian international land borders and over 2,000 miles of coastal waters surrounding the Florida Peninsula and the island of Puerto Rico. Many agencies of secret police have had their success and failures, some more than others. The KGB, which in English means "the Committee of Public Safety," has had their share of both successes and failures. Most secret police agencies have been used primarily to obtain information from other countries. This was also a primary goal for the KGB, but one of their other goals, which was just as important, was to keep unwanted outside information from the Russian people.
