Urban Prep Academy is a collection of all-male public schools with a mission to promote academics and provide a college preparatory education aimed at helping student achieve academic success. Urban Prep has set out to re-write the story of the Black male in Chicago (and America) by seeking to achieve the basis of equity of the functional theory within the school and to defeat the established status of conflict theory enacted by society. Echoing the paradox of W.E.B. Du Bois ' theory of the double-conscience of Black people, functional theory invokes the quest for an egalitarian experience with education whereas conflict theory appears to contradict and dispel the possibility of being an America elite. Further, it comes to a discussion of maintaining social order--defined as everyone having equal access to a role within society-- versus social status where seeks to assign roles based on socioeconomic and class rank. Urban Prep was able to celebrate the joyous graduation season this past June 2014 with their first college graduates (XXXX). Students often experience the harsh realities of society, but Urban Prep has become a beacon of hope for their success in spite of their situations. Additionally, Urban Prep goes beyond being a simple school with only books and teachers in the front of the classroom. The school offers resources to support students as they enter the school as well as resources that they may need during their high school tenure with the addition of serves avible to support students through the collegiate experience. In this regard, the functional theory forces students at Urban Prep to envision their Blackness obtaining and education that will also open doors to other opportunities within the different sectors of society. On the other hand, conflict theory alleges that the concept of being American is a tough status achievement for Black males in that to be truly American is to also reconcile and align with a historically oppressive lineage of brethren. The experiences of academic strife, self doubt, and financial woes that the students detail illustrates a conflict in of it self in order to break the mold of who are America 's socially elite. The idea of the conflict theory then becomes a road block on the way to success. Black men have to be resilent in order to overcome the elements of conflict theory in order to live the dream of the functional theory.
