Urban Prep Academy is a collection of all-male public schools with a mission to promote academics and provide a college preparatory education aimed at helping student achieve academic success. Urban Prep has set out to re-write the story of the Black male in Chicago (and America) by seeking to achieve the basis of equity of the functional theory within the school and to defeat the established status of conflict theory enacted by society. Echoing the paradox of W.E.B. Du Bois ' theory of the double-conscience of Black people, functional theory invokes the quest for an egalitarian experience with education whereas conflict theory appears to contradict and dispel the possibility of being an America elite. The egalitarian thought behind the functional theory seeks to breed equity in order for students to self navigate toward the various roles needed within society. The essence of Urban Prep seeks to achieve this very goal. Urban Prep seeks to address the achievement gap by creating an environment, or system, where Black males are given a quality high school education, sent to college, and helped with resources in order to obtain a bachelor 's level education (XXXX). Further,the school has an alumni affairs department that has routine contact with graduates from the academy in order to check on their progress and address whatever deficiencies that the school can. Although the school does try to keep life 's trials and tribulations from sorting the students into anything other successful paths, external factors, often read as agents of conflict theory, test students ' endurance and resilience.
Conflict theory, or the authoritative model, asserts that education is a goal for everyone too, but only to serve the purposes of those with power (XXXXX). Like the functional theory, conflict theory seeks to educate students about behaviors they should employ for the future; however, conflict theory seeks for these behaviors to maintain social status over social order. Du Bois’ The Souls of Black Folk, Du Bois provides a roadmap for African Americans to discover and understand themselves through the pursuit of knowledge, self-awareness, and authenticity. The excerpt is a significant part of the essay because it also speaks for the modern day pursuit of knowledge, self-awareness, and authenticity, an indispensable path into finding one’s self.
In his book Improbable Scholars, David Kirp examines the steps communities take to make successful education reforms. While describing the particular education initiatives of Union City, New Jersey, Kirp suggests that “[if] we want to improve education, we must first have a vision of what good education is,” (2015). Kirp’s descriptions of Union City certainly support that point, but it’s difficult to claim that that point is generalizable if we do not examine other education initiatives and their approach to reform. The essay “Still Separate, Still Unequal”, by Jonathan Kozol, discusses the reality of inner-city public school systems, and the isolation and segregation of inequality that students are subjected to; as a result, to receive an education. Throughout the essay, Kozol proves evidence of the inequality that African American and Hispanic children face in the current school systems.

Functional Analysis (FA) is any empirical evidence of a cause and effect relationship (Iwata & Dozier, 2008; Jackson, 2017). In other words, FA helps identify the functional relationship. By identifying this relationship, the time to effective treatment is reduced. In the case of problem behaviors, FA helps identify the cause and effect of problem behaviors and also the causes of maintenance before treatment. Problem behaviors do not foretell the function, but FA offers a true demonstration of why the behavior is or is not occurring. FA are more reliable than indirect methods of collecting data, like questionnaires and rating scales, which are unreliable even though more available. Carter G. Woodson, the father of Black History once wrote, “If you can control a man's thinking you do not have to worry about his action. When you determine what a man shall think you do not have to concern yourself about what he will do”. During the 19th and early 20th centuries segregation in American public schools was part of the norm and many black schools were inferior to white schools. In the early 1950s, Brown v. Board of Education, a poignant case in the fight for the desegregation of schools was presented to the U.S District Court for the District of Kansas. The defense ruled that “segregated schools simply prepared black children for the segregation they would face during adulthood.” After great deliberation, the court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs banishing the “separate but equal” rule, making it unethical to allow segregation in public schools. Desegregation did not integrate the schools, instead it removed the educational curricula for schools, paralyzing the educational system and victimizing children both black and white. This desegregation created a new kind of segregation, one that will determine the future of young minds and undermine the ability of minority children branding them average or low-achieving. In the struggle for quality education, school professionals and experts limit educational progressiveness using tracking and no child left behind.

Functionalism views society as the stability and assimilation of a range of forces that function within it. While society is a separate entity with a life of its own, there are individual elements contributing to that stability. Functionalism as a sociological theory emphasizes assimilation rather than the dissociation of society. Therefore, the society is seen as a whole that is compromised of parts which give one another their identity and their function. The part, whether that is education, such as a school, or sports, such as a football team, operates in relation to the other parts, and cannot be entirely understood in isolation from the other parts. All the parts are interrelated, and when there is a disturbance in any one of the parts, is when you can see the interdependence. But what is important about this theory is that “there will always be some reorganization and tendency to restore equilibrium” (Wallace and Wolf 17). Functionalist do not believe it’s crucial that the people involved in the society to be aware of this interconnectedness anymore than the brain and heart consciously realize that they work together as an organism.
Functionalism is a materialist stance in the philosophy of mind that argues that mental states are purely functional, and thus categorized by their input and output associations and causes, rather than by the physical makeup that constitutes its parts. In this manner, functionalism argues that as long as something operates as a conscious entity, then it is conscious. Block describes functionalism, discusses its inherent dilemmas, and then discusses a more scientifically-driven counter solution called psychofunctionalism and its failings as well. Although Block’s assertions are cogent and well-presented, the psychofunctionalist is able to provide counterarguments to support his viewpoint against Block’s criticisms. I shall argue that though both concepts are not without issue, functionalism appears to satisfy a more acceptable description that philosophers can admit over psychofunctionalism’s chauvinistic disposition that attempts to limit consciousness only to the human race.
The conflict theory in this case discusses the lack of resources that are down to nearly nothing and about how the lower classes are having to constantly compete for them. It shows you how the poor are controlled by the rich. The film “Waiting for Superman” takes a closer look into the public school systems around the United States from the poorest of the poor all the way over to the suburbs. The parents of these students are obviously sending their children to school with the high hopes that they are going to excel academically, but the reality of it is that most of the children that are either born into or somehow end up in a position of poverty end up either dropping out rather than graduating. The upper class will place their children into schools where they are offered quality education. With the way that our nation is growing, I am confident in being able to say that the gap will only expand and the poor will continue to suffer in the educational department as well as others. While the lower class students in public school are failing and dropping out, the upper class students are too busy bettering their future. Our country states that “every child has a dream”, and that “no child will be left behind”. How true is that claim exactly? Yes, it is true that every child has a dream, but how many children are being left behind because they are stuck in poverty? There was one scene in the movie where the charter schools had to draw numbers just to give a child a chance at a better education. That is highly disturbing that a child has to suffer through something as humiliating as that. Our public system does not encourage academic growth, it hampers it. Structural Functionalism or what I call just functionalism, is just another theory that has society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability. This approach looks at society through the macro-level of orientation, which is a broad focus on the social structures that shape society as a whole, and believes that society has evolved like organisms. This approach looks at both social structure and the social functions. Functionalism has society as a whole in terms of the function of its constituent elements; namely norms and customs, traditions, and institutions. There is a common analogy, popularized by Herbert Spencer that presents these parts of society as "organs" that works towards the proper functioning of the "body" as a whole. In the most basic terms, it simply emphasizes "the effort to impute and the rigorously as possible, to each feature, custom, or even practice the effect on the functioning of a supposedly stable and cohesive system.
Once a school system drops their efforts to integrate schools, the schools in low-income neighborhood are left to suffer; not to mention that segregation in schools leads, not only to the neglect of schools, but the neglect of students as well. Resegregation quite literally divides the public schools into two groups “the good schools”, that are well funded, and “the bad schools”, that receive a fraction of the benefits-- more often than not the groups are alternatively labeled as “the white schools” and “the black schools” (and/or hispanic). Opportunities for the neglected students diminish significantly without certain career specific qualifications that quality education can provide-- they can’t rise above the forces that are keeping them in their situation.
There are many criticisms of functionalism and their theories: Ø Functionalist ideas almost portray humans as being autonomous and that only socialisation determines our lives. They do not really see humans as the unpredictable creatures they are, not possible to stray away from the predictable ideas that functionalists have of people. Too much stress is placed on harmony and the potential for conflict and its affects are generally ignored. Ø There is no recognition of difference by class, region or ethnic group. The functionalist picture is simply reflective of happy middle-class American families.
