The United States of America was founded by and for immigrants who were searching for freedom. It has become the land of opportunity, the home of the free, and a place where you can experience the American dream. Moreover, each year whether it is voluntary or not, thousands of people will immigrate to the U.S in hope of a better tomorrow, leaving behind their families, homes and identities. Nevertheless, the journey is not always easy, most of the time these immigrants have to face many obstacles in order to come into the United States. Many will die before they even reach their destination and even if they do make it, they are looking into a future filled with struggles due to being undocumented, and are forced to live each day with the fear of being caught. There are more than 12 million immigrants in the United States, to try to deport all of them is an idea that many see as impractical and impossible (Pawlick, Finley). Seeing as immigration is not a problem that can be solved by deportation, allowing these immigrants to obtain a citizenship is the best way to insure their future as well as native-born citizens. For many Mexican immigrants, crossing the border into the land of freedom and the American dream is no easy task. Some immigrants come over illegally by means of hiding in cars to cross borders, using visitor visas to stay longer, marrying to become citizens, and having babies as ‘anchors’ to grant automatic citizenship. Other immigrants gain green cards and work visas and work their way into becoming US citizens legally and subsequently gaining citizenship through paperwork for their families back home. After escaping harsh living and working conditions in Mexico, immigrants come to America prepared to gain education, opportunity, and work. This American dream unfortunately does not come to pass for most.
Heritage Foundation believes that America should not, “grant amnesty to illegal aliens. Regardless of the penalties imposed any program that grants individuals who are unlawfully present the legal permission to remain here rewards illegal behavior and is unfair to those who obey the law and go through the regula¬tory and administrative requirements to enter the country legally. Those who enter the United States illegally should not be rewarded with permanent legal status or other such benefits, and they should be penalized in any road to citizenship. Those who enter and remain in the country illegally are violating the law, and condoning or encouraging such violations increases the likelihood of further illegal conduct."(Heritage Foundation) Many natives would feel that they are not receiving the same benefits as the illegal’s turned citizen and feel that it is unfair. This would include government loans and employment as immigrants would mean a more competitive market and more or less money. However, what Americans need to realize is that life is competitive and will not be fair. If they outwork their competition, they will eventually see success in the long run. Another effect of pardoning immigrants would be that the image of supporting criminals is a good thing. Many immigrants have different backgrounds that could be clean or notorious. Because amnesty means to “ignore”, the past of many immigrants would be wiped clean and it would send the wrong message towards others about whether doing the right thing the right way is the best way. A young man by the name of Billy Weaver was reported missing this morning; he is seventeen years old. A 43 year old detective Patrick Maloney, husband of Mary Maloney was found dead in his ‘loving’ home on the evening of September 16th, 1954 around 11:00pm. Mary was heartbroken when she came home and found her beloved husband lying dead on the ground. However, the cause of death was a mystery. When the police had arrived at the scene of the crime, it had looked like someone broke into their home and that they were looking for something. The police had investigated for hours but couldn’t seem to find any evidence or a specific lead.
