Although the medical technology advances and better health care improved life expectancy age, the world’s population is steadily becoming older, which can bring negative results for society. In the last century, some countries, particularly in developed countries, have shifted policy in the direction of low fertility. Combined with the advances in medical technology, people get better assistance, which makes the average age increases within a short period of time. As a result, people are happy with living longer. However, aging population problem emerges. Compared with improving people’s life, a series of issues caused by aging population cannot be ignored.
It is human nature that makes people love to live long or even externally. A latest

They claim that older people play many important roles in society, such as mediators, teachers, employees, volunteers, housewife, caretakers, culture keepers, and someone who is knowledgeable and remembers histories. There are some organizations owned by old people in order to let them participate in politics. In addition, most rural areas usually face the problem of lack of food. When it occurs, the elderly are full of agricultural knowledge can decide the survival of their land (2012, 35). Indeed, old people have a certain position in the community, but too many elderly can result overflow. In fact, this has already happened in most developed countries. For example, the speed of aging in Japan is the fastest, and 65 or older Japanese account 22% of the total. There will be almost 40% of Japanese are 65 or older when Japanese population will have decreased from 127 million to 87 million by 2060. It is also said that by 2110 the Japanese population can fall to 42.9 million, which is only a third of the current population. As a result, it will seriously affect Japan’s economic and political status in the world (D.M.). Aging population does cause a series of problem to society, although there are still advantages.
Increasingly, aging population is getting out of hand because of the falling birth rates and better health care. Research shows that the problems caused by aging population
Many countries globally are faced with unprecedented demographic changes from high mortality and fertility to low mortality and fertility, giving rise to an ageing population. Population ageing is profound and enduring, and has major consequences and implications for all facets of human life. With a larger proportion of older people, one of the major concerns is health and health care. The health of older persons generally declines with age and some illness are more likely to be associated with older people. One of such illness is dementia. As the life expectancies of the general population have dramatically increased since the turn of the century, more and more people are at risk of developing a dementia (National Institute of Aging, 2000).
An aging population is indeed a problem for the society and will possibly cause many social and economic difficulties in the future. According to David Foot (2003), professor of Economics at University of Toronto, an effective birth rate of 2.2% against current 1.75% will be necessary to replace the current work force in the near future and the government’s policy of bringing in more immigrants will eventually fail (Foot, 2003, 2). However some people predict that the increased size of an aging population will drive growth in the home, health care, and many other industries resulting in job creation and economic growth (Marketwire, 2013, 1). Majority of the people are of the opinion that the issue will be mainly in the health care and economic activity. As humans age, they start to develop health problems, leading to more visits to a medical clinic putting extra burden on health care system.
The problem comes from the treatment older adults receive from the society especially due to the tradition of reduced access to opportunities and segregation. After reading the article, it is evident that the society is leading in influencing the issues and problems most aging people are facing in the modern age. For instance, the elderly have a poor quality of life because of the violence and poverty in the inner cities. Older women are carrying the burden of the society such as taking care of their grandchildren left by the death of a young person. The resources to take care of such families are limited since they only have access to the public assistance. The voices section also assisted in understanding the topic because it also explains the reasons aging has become prevalent in the society. According to Curry, a few people understand the problems the aged people are facing. In most cities in the US, older adults especially the people of color are denied some jobs, which places most of them in poor conditions since they do not have the resources to meet their physical and medical needs. It is important to understand that older adults have a lot to offer in the place of work or the society since they have the experience and the knowledge they have amassed over the

After World War II ended in 1945, veterans returned home to get married and start families which resulted in a “baby boom.” This generation, which has been dubbed “Baby Boomers,” was born between 1946 and 1964. In 2011 this generation will begin to reach age 65, which is a pivotal age for senior adults. In 2050, the number of Americans aged 65 and older is projected to be 88.5 million, more than double its projected population of 40.2 million in 2010. The baby boomers are largely responsible for this increase in the older population, as they will begin crossing into this category in 2011. (US Census Bureau, 2010). With our population shifting to an older demographic, ageism will weigh heavily on our society and the importance of researching, discussing and finding solutions to ageism will come to the forefront.
The world is said to reach a population of 9.2 billion people in 2050. The economy of a country is affected in multiple ways; one of the factors affecting the progression of an economy is the life expectancy. In the past decade, the sizes of families are decreasing due to many reasons such as low fertility rates, economic reasons, high education, and etc. causing an increase in the elderly population. Over the years, the life expectancy is continuing to rise at a phenomenal rate as the technologies advance to protect myriads of lives. The increased ageing population has been putting constant pressure on the economies to provide for the sick and the unemployed. In turn, this hinders the progress of the economy. But on the contrary, the increase in older citizens in an economy has also benefitted t...
Before, the world use to an inequality in regard to the health of countries, however, global inequality is decreasing and life expectancy in countries as United States China have increased. (Roser). Furthermore, according to an article in the Fiscal Times, China is starting to “leverage its aging population to sustain growth and will require training programs and learning opportunities to tap into its overlooked older citizens” (Hodin). This means that they are thinking of taking the idea of retirement out. On the contrary, retirement age of Americans is 65 and above and one can have a retirement plan which one can get special benefits from. With an increasing of the aging population there is also an increase of health problems as well. In the United States, “incidence of heart failure increases with age.” This further causes the epidemic of heart failure to grow in future generations. (Vigen). China, on the other hand had the “one-child” policy but that is causing the country to have few children to help support a rapidly aging population. As individuals get older they need more health and long term care, however, since the working-age population has decreased in size it has become more expensive to treat the elder. Chronic health problems have become quite the norm and it led to a population which needed long-term care. Much like the
The existing U.S. population is over 315 million and rising. In the year 2030, 72 million Americans will be 65 or older, a 50 percent change in age demographics since the year 2000. The change is primarily due to the aging baby boomers, who were born at the end of World War II. Americans are living longer than ever befo...
In elderly population most of the research carried out so far emphasizes on the functional problems and diseases. When it comes to successful aging elderly (SEA), it has been recommended that health status should be used to distinguish between elderly subgroups populace and disease-free people possible describe successful aging elderly (SAE).
In India, old age was never a problem. Elder abuse was considered as a western problem and old age home was an alien concept. Earlier, the elderly persons of a person of a family were respected a lot and they continued to live with respect till their death, but now the times have changed. As we move rapid in this forward, modern and advanced state of being, we’re been illumined more about our forthcoming days. The elderly, who have provided their services and support to the society, feel unloved and neglected at this phase of their lives. Old age is viewed as an unavoidable, undesirable and problem ridden phase of life. Problems of aging
“The Golden Years? You've got to be kidding...(Nelson)” Ageism is the main influence for how older people view the aging process. Despite stereotypes, today, for the first time in history, most people can expect to live into their sixties and beyond. A longer life represents an important opportunity, not only for older people and their families, but also for societies as a whole. Additional years provide the chance to pursue new activities such as further education or a long-neglected passion, while continuing to make valuable contributions to family and community.
In today’s society, what was once said to be true and taken as fact regarding older people is no longer the whole story. As Laslett states, “At all times before the middle of the twentieth century and all over the globe the greater part of human life potential has been wasted, by people dying before their allotted time was up.” (1989a), and to a great extent a lot
In the Philippines, the ages to be considered a senior citizen are those who are aged 60 years old and over. The senior citizens made up 6.8 percent of the 92.1 million household populations in 2010, higher than the 6.0 percent recorded in 2000 and the number reached over six million in 2011 and it is seen to double in 16 years. The number of people 60 years old and above, or those considered as senior citizens, has increased, as the country's household population increases. With the growing number of senior citizens, there is a generalized notion associated with senior citizens such as degeneration and decline of health and well being but on the contrary, most of them are still active and productive, performing significant roles at home and
Many people think that the government should take up the role to provide the old people, who were once contributed to the society in many different ways, such as, paying taxes. According to the population statistics today, the average lifespan of men and women are 85 years of age and 90-year-old respectively. By doing a simple math, these old
In contemporary times, the population of the aging people is shooting up with each passing day. This has been attributed to a number of factors in the residential health center that has contributed to people living unusually longer than the conventio...
