Recommended: why uniforms shouldn't be enforced in public schools
One of the issues that our society has to deal with is whether to have "uniforms in public schools."The word uniform means "one form" which makes everyone equal. Some people say yes some say no for different reasons. I truly believe that every person has the right to be equal. People should not be judged of what they are wearing.
One of the reasons schools should have uniforms is because families could save money. An average cost of a uniform in JC penny for one student a year is about three hundred dollars . A normal family spends over five hundred to thousand dollars for clothing for a student. If public schools have uniforms students wouldn’t feel different which would help them feel better and concentrate in their lessons. If families would be able to save money on clothing they could spend it on other school expenses students have. School uniforms could also last more than a year. Even if you grow out of your school uniform you could pass it down to a younger sibling or cousin. Uniforms help the need of not buying so many cloths a year.
Officials say that students feel happier when they don’t have to worry about their clothes. Which would help students focus in class better. Virginia Draa, assistant professor at Youngstown state university took a survey with students with uniforms and students without uniforms. Her results were fascinating, she said that even if their wasn’t that much of an academic improvement. But she said there were better attendance, graduation and Proficiency rates. It is proven that uniforms not only help for graduation and other rates it also helps to gain discipline. Having uniforms in school would help students take school more seriously. Students would feel equal in class because there wouldn’t be any differences in clothing.
Doing research I have found out that the university of Missouri assistant professor, David Brunsma said that he conducted a survey. In that survey it showed that bringing in uniforms made academics worse in schools. David tested the school with uniforms for half a year and the results said that students did better without uniforms. However this survey was only conducted in one school. In 39 other schools in Ohio they say that they had better attendance and graduation rates. Uniforms are already taking place in twenty different states and most of them have good opinions.
Having some sameness can create a safe environment in schools. Having school uniforms can help decrease in-school violence, theft rates and gang colors. School uniforms can also eliminate distraction that clothes can cause. According to a study done at a Long Beach middle school overall school crime decreased by 36% when they enforced a mandatory program. If people did not have to wear school uniforms gang rates may go up, theft rate would be higher and it would help the school see who belongs at school and who doesn’t. You need school uniforms to have a safe environment for people to teach and learn.
When you think about the word uniform, what’s the first thing that comes to you? You might think of a police officer, nurse, doctor or maybe even someone in the military, but what about uniforms for school? Today, there are more schools that are now considering switching to uniforms to keep things professional and equal to all students, but, is it really fair to make restrictions to students on wanting to be able to express themselves personally? Students might feel that they are being restricted on the freedom to be able to express who they are but schools believe that the safety and security of the student’s body should be more important than just expressing their own styles. Now, the school systems are struggling more each day to try to
Uniforms should not be implemented in schools because they diminish individuality. The reasons why I propose so, is because of the following evidence. The first piece of evidence backing up thus claim is said by Robyn Silverman, “clothes provide a vehicle, a benign vehicle, to allow them to express themselves, and say I’m different, without having to approach riskier ways” Another piece of evidence was a study conducted by the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada. They found
It is a great idea for schools to implement a policy on school uniforms because statistics show that students who wear uniforms make better grades, the male students are not going to be distracted by what the female students are (or aren't) wearing, and students feel a sense of fairness with one another as they are all wearing the same things and when students are at one with one another their confidence soars, which leads to doing better at school. Student uniforms helps with reducing the amount of bullying therefore the students who would normally be bullied now have a much better disposition while at school, which will lead to a healthier safer learning environment. When students feel less threatened at school, they can concentrate better which leads to better grades. The schools which have an enforced uniform policy have properly dressed students. When teenage girls, want to impress teenage boys dress inappropriately it causes a lot of distractions and trouble. The girls are also envious of on one another so unrest is caused in the classroom throughout the day, not only with the boys who are looking at the girls, but also at the girls who are jealous of the ones getting the attention.
When a child knows what is expected of them, as far as dress goes, it helps with distractions in the classroom. Uniforms ecourage modesty and also reduces the need for discipline from teachers because a student is not following dress code. When uniforms are in place, children come to class looking professional which can promote a better learning environment. The last and possibly the most important reason why I believe school uniforms are necessary is for social equality.
... I have come to the conclusion that the positives outweigh the negatives. I think that wearing school uniforms will bring a great sense of satisfaction to the all parties. Uniforms accompanied by other reforms can make a difference. Uniforms send a message and remind students they are in school. One element of the message is that they are in school that is your place of work that is your place of work where you are working, to get smart. It is up to us to do what is right for our children. If we have found one solution to eliminate the problems that most students are facing today, such as bullying, costs etc., why not take advantage of it. We all want what is best for our children. School uniforms might not be the solution to mend students’ academic reading, writing, and math proficiency, but it aids in addressing part of the problem with regulations and attendance.
Mentioned in Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “When children wear their own clothes into school, this then becomes a time for them to judge each other, so it prevents competition and teasing” (Pros and Cons of School Uniforms). When you have school uniforms you won’t be wearing different things so you will become more equal. If the students are equal, it then reduces judgement and bullying between the students and makes the school a better place. Another positive statement on how school uniforms are beneficial comes from, Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “Many educators believe that students who wear school uniforms perform better academically in school, and a study done in 1988 by Notre Dame shows a slight statistical evaluation in student performances among students who wear uniforms” (LoveToKnow). School uniforms will remove the clothing distraction and increase the amount of time given to the academics. Some students take time in the morning to get ready for school, uniforms will allow that time for sleep and studies. According to Procon.org, “Parents can reduce their financial burden when their children are limited to wearing one outfit everyday” (ProConorg Headlines). You won’t feel the pressure to buy clothes that are in style, or expensive and trendy. Uniforms are easier to maintain. They tend to last longer and can be washed easier than other clothes. Wearing school uniforms create a community of higher educated students and equality to
The biggest reasons why uniforms should be integrated are the improvement in grades and attendance rates. Instead of mainly focusing on outfits and the way they’re dressed, students would be able to focus more on academic performance because they wouldn’t be comparing themselves to others. Moreover, attendance rates would go up because “many parents report that their children spend a great deal of time planning and choosing their outfits and that uniforms allow students this time to sleep and study.” So, uniforms would minimize the time spent choosing outfits and students would be more likely to attend school.
By requiring school uniforms in public schools, education will be improved. A dress code will enforce discipline toward learning. Uniforms improve a person’s outlook toward success. Students generally act the way they are dressed. With fewer distractions, students see the school as a workplace for teaching and learning. Students also have less stress in their lives because they are not in a fashion competition. Dress codes also lead to a change in grades. Mainly this happens because the student’s attendance comes up. There is also a change in grades because it is easier to focus when everyone looks alike.
Uniforms benefit schools by keeping students safe and able to have pride for their school. First, uniforms provide a sense of security for the school staff so they can easily identify an intruder on school grounds. Second, it will help students perform better in class and improve their grades and attendance. Students will be more focused on what they are being taught and not what they are wearing. Having students wear uniforms will enhance their school spirit. Students will have more pride in their school by wearing their school colors. Schools must carry out a uniform policy to better assist their students.
These are just a few of the many arguments presented by the opposing side of the argument. In any case, school uniforms, establish a resounding unity in schools and centralize a child’s focus on to what is important. The “team member” image is presented proudly and students are normally more than willing to accept the uniforms once they’ve tried them. Uniforms have helped develop me into the person I am today and clearly help academically. With all the benefits its been proven to have, uniforms are the best choice.
“We cannot forget that reinforcing economic differences drives students further apart when schools should be drawing them closer together.” There are many problems in public schools with no uniforms. The use of school uniforms could eliminate some of these problems. Although school uniforms may take away a child’s individuality, there are more benefits than disadvantages to having school uniforms in public schools because school uniforms lessen the money spent on the latest fashion trends and school uniforms provide a positive school climate.
Students are distracted by the variety of clothing they choose to wear it takes away from them gaining inner knowledge. Students choose to wear fancy, strange, or bright colorful clothes. Students become more interested in paying attention to what other students are wearing and what they have instead of focusing on the subject they are being taught in class. Students should be focusing on gaining new knowledge and skills. Wearing uniforms would teach students how to focus on their personalities, inner beauty, rather than their
