1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Unemployment occur when a person is available to work and seeking work but currently without work. The amount of unemployment is usually measured using the unemployment rate, which is defined as the percentage of those in the labor force who are unemployed. The number of unemployed persons in Malaysia increased from 382900 persons in 2011 to 396300 persons in 2012. Unemployed persons in Malaysia are reported by the Department of Statistics, Malaysia. In Malaysia, unemployed persons are individuals who are without a job and actively seeking to work.

For many years, manufacturing had been the strongest sector in the country and the main contributor towards employment creation until the financial crisis in mid-1997. From this period onwards, the agriculture sector was being progressively replaced by the manufacturing and services sector. The services sector, in particular, required people who possess the right soft skills such as communication and interpersonal skills but getting graduates with those qualities has been quite difficult. Generally, most organizations prefer to employ graduates with experience. The employer will find the worker who had a lot of experienced one compared to the one without experience. Lack of experience and skills are also causes of graduate unemployment. Once asked to assess the importance of a comprehensive set of individual skills, business leaders put soft skills at the top of their list, ahead of traits like integrity, professionalism and a positive attitude.

A total of 32 percent each, students are strongly agree and agree that programs that organized by UPM give the positive impact to them to improve their soft skills. With these programs students can improve their soft skills such as teamwork, communication skills, leadership and entrepreneur skills. During finishing school, students are also being taught to boost their confidence and make them marketable. It also assists students in writing a proper resume and prepares students with different types of interview scenario to improve their interview skills.
