To begin with, the first level of cultural identity is race. I am a white Italian-American; hence, Helms White Racial Identity Model would be helpful in identifying my cultural identity. Helms created The White Racial Identity Model, that contains six different racial identity statuses. She assumed that, “racism is an intimate and central part of being a White American. Developing a healthy White identity requires movement through two phases, an abandonment of racism and defining a nonracist White identity” (Sue and Sue, 2013, p. 324). Helms continued to explain that each individual may be stuck or experiencing a different status of racial identity. The model is not referred to as stages because an individual does not go through each status in order. For example, on individual may be on the first status; however, through a specific experience may be able to jump to the highest status of racial identity.

I will become more aware of the discrimination against women and try not to dismiss it. Furthermore, speaking up when I feel discriminated for being a woman is very important as well. Being unable to speak up about my concerns will allow the discrimination to keep occurring.
Overall, whether you are part of a minority group or dominant group being aware of the differences, prejudice, and discrimination that occurs is very important. Educating yourself on different cultures, races, and ethnicity can help reduce misinterpretations. Furthermore, being aware that not every group has the same experiences as you is important to acknowledge. Appreciating and understand the experiences of every individual may be helpful and significant for the future.
