Understanding Learning Styles
The twenty-first century the exponential increase in technology has allowed people to have unprecedented access to seemingly limitless information unlike any other time in human history. Today people from all corners of the globe now have the ability to harness a vast sea of resources at their very fingertips. One of the byproducts of the technological revolution has been the dramatic increase in online, or distance learning, from perspective students looking for a more flexible option to pursue higher education. And although online learning does present a tremendous opportunity for students who may not otherwise have the time or resources to make a college education possible, the online learning environment also presents a number of new challenges to learners due to its non-traditional setting.
Among the most challenging aspects for new students is one of the fundamental pillars of any individualized educational program – finding the best way to learn. Although traditionally a straight forward, linear approach of: Read, study, repeat has been thought of as the winning formula for academic success, new evidence suggests that each of us may in fact have a particular learning style that will allow students to optimize their own academic program. This is often referred to as The Multiple Intelligences Theory.
The Multiple Intelligences Theory suggests that there are multiple learning styles, and that by discovering which learning style is most effective for students on an individual basis, information can then be communicated in such a way that it is absorbed and retained more effectively.
