Uncommon Courage: The Creation of a Hero

What is a hero? Is it the characters in the comic section of the Newspaper? Or is it the typical characters in the Marvel comics? In today’s society, heroes has come to be recognized for not only their great deeds but also their notable determination, decisive, and admiration towards mankind. Often people recognize heroes as changing thousands of people’s lives however did you know there is a hero in all of us? Recently 8 year-old, Tyler Doohan died after saving 6 of his family members in a fire that occurred in New York. Heroes are capable enough of changing someone’s life and don’t need to have super abilities; they just need a caring heart and a love for mankind.

To start off, heroes often sacrifice something valuable whether it is their time or possibly their life. For instance, 1,000 middle school and high school students sacrifice there time in order to participate n the City Year Youth Heroes Program. In the TIME magazine, Teens Team Up to Give Back, Caroline Kennedy states, “At an age when most kids are more interested in sleeping late and hanging out, Michael and more than 1,000 other middle and high schoolers in 16 cities across the country are getting up early on Saturday morning for a full day of community service in the City year Young Heroes program.” Would you have been willing to get up early to make a positive change and performing a service project? In order to be a hero you don’t need to be 18 or older, you can be any age and still make a change.

Additionally, not all heroes succeed, what truly matters is what they were doing and why they were doing it. As Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono once stated in The Making of a Hero is that, “Heroes are selfless people who perform extraordinary acts. The mark of heroes is no...

In conclusion, people say that heroes don’t necessarily need a caring heart or a love for man kind yet again if you think about stories of heroes and articles about real life heroes you can identify that they all need a little care in their heart and a little love for mankind to do what they do. Moreover, a few weeks ago a Texas police officer, Ariel Soltura, played catch with a boy playing alone who didn’t even know each other names. Even though, that may not seem like a heroic act it truly is. The police officer overall demonstrated that the boy does have a friend and it is him; it takes a caring heart to stop your job and play catch with a lonely boy. Doing something small as that still makes you a hero. What is a hero to you?
