Imagine a woman in her early twenties sitting in a waiting room. She took an early pregnancy test and the little pink plus sign proved that she was indeed pregnant. She had just begun her journey into medical school and was in no position to be a new mother, she could barely take care of herself. In the end she made herself an appointment with a doctor just to get another opinion but her mind was made up, she was going to abort the baby no matter what. The ultra sound room was small, almost two small with a patient table, desk, and a couple of chairs. She had never felt so alone all her life. Millions of women face unplanned pregnancies every year, but under what circumstances should any women be allowed to have an abortion? The practice of abortion has dated all the way back to five thousand years in China. Abortion induced by herbs or manipulation was used as a form of birth control in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. However, the practice was relatively uncommon because of the lack of safe medical procedures (Lansford). As the years have rolled on different types of birth control have been used such as; a pill, shot, implantation, vaginal ring, and also a patch. Pushing for abortion to be illegal has been discussed more and more because woman are using this as a type of birth control itself (Guernsey 12). The growing fetus becomes inconvenient for the woman that has to carry it, and because abortion is legal she can drive herself to the clinic and have the baby aborted that very same day and be able to leave later that day like nothing ever happened. In fact, forty percent of all abortions are repeat abortions (Guernsey 12). Of course, just like all situations, excuses are made when they fail to use protection including that they are not ready to be a parent or does not want the child to have to experience single-parenthood (Guernsey 11).
